It was a dream come true to be a part of The Eddie, to just be on the alternate list and then to be in it, and I can't believe it "

10 times since 1984! I am fortunate to say I was able to sit in person and watch two of those.
❤it was awesome that not only a home town guy won the honor but a lifeguard at the north shore as well 🎉

Non surfers (I am one) don't realize just how powerful waves are. I was living in Huntington Beach sometime in the early 90's (it was just before I deployed to Iraq/Desert Storm). The surf was huge. I used to boogie board and thought it a good idea to go out. There were broken surfboards up and down the beach. I paddled out and caught a huge wave and just by dumb luck I was at the right spot at the right time and had one hell of a ride. I could not believe how fun it was and how fast I was going.I was stoked and paddled out for another one, big mistake. I was pummeled by the next wave and barely survived, I thought I was done. I popped up and saw what looked like a 100 foot wave heading straight for me. It seemed silent just waiting for that wave which I was absolutely sure was going to kill me. I really thought I was going to die. That was one of the three times in my life that I really thought I was going to die.

Believe it or not it's calmness in that chaos that allows people to survive it so easily and head back out, any level of panic brings you miles closer to not making it. Same with at the shore break, nice n calm body parallel to the shore when you get the sand be limp not ridgid. Maybe a sand burn at worst instead of broken bones, as kids we called shore break like that body whompers and treated em like a play ground where we got to get in our first cavernous barrels and get a look at the inside.
Lol probably a 8 foot wave. Huntington dosent get very big.

@@mendoblendo321 My point still stands. His experience might not have been in the biggest of waves but it doesn't change the fact that the ocean completely humbled him and that he was approaching the ocean with the wrong attitude. My experience largely comes from a spot nicknamed Luma-Die, you either know or you don't.

Not to be critizing, but just curious, I always thought Eddie earned that saying, when he risked his life and went to find help, and never returned? or did he earn that by going after big waves?

Eddie won’t go last Wednesday when the waves were way bigger, because “Eddie” wanted to cash in on the Sony open
I went to the last two Eddies and I gotta say, the waves yesterday were considerably smaller, nothing exceptional out there, definitely not a consistent 40 ft. Plus, it's the first time I've heard it claimed when the Eddie would run - they declared Sunday would run like five days in advance.

He did amazing however Luke got that 3rd reef bomb unlike Healey which was the difference.
