Yes I always reckon that fruit trees that fruit too heavily one year tend to have a rest the next year, I guess none if us ever bother but thinning fruit is the right way to go 😁
Great video, Jeff. It's a shame it's not bloomed as much this year, hopefully, you still get a few avocados off it. I really like how you maximize space by multi-grafting your fruit trees, it's something I'm considering doing here (although unfortunately not with avocados, as they wouldn't survive in my location).
This year was abnormal with the rainstorms that lasted longer than normal (I'm in Fresno, CA) in the Central Valley. I have a Fuerte tree that hasn't flowered at all yet, lots of new growth, beautiful growth but not even 1 single flower yet. I see that your tree is lacking as well. I hope that it was just the weather and that we will have a late bloom
FACT - Avocado Trees go in cycles. One year you can have a bumper crop. The next year almost nothing. The funny thing. I have a 30-foot Bacon Avocado Tree I grew from a seed from my parent's tree. I noticed when I have a bumper crop. So does my parent's original tree have a bumper crop. Even though we live 40 miles apart.
Yes, Some varieties are seriously alternate bearing. My daughter has a young Zutano Tree in Sacramento produces same every year so it could be nutritional.
This season I bloom boosted a Stewart with Dr.Earths Flower Girl 3-9-4. Despite heavy flowering and some leaf thining there is plenty of vegitative growth now. Maybe some nitrogen is good in a lower ratio. Thanks for sharing
Great video, Jeff. Do you spray your avocado trees when they are young during cool rainy winter months to prevent root rot? I have young avocado trees. Thank you for the video. It's a great reminder.
It is possible that the alternate bearing is not so much affected by the 0--10-10 fertilizer as it is affected by multiple grafting. With multiple grafting, you are expanding the harvest window over more months to accommodate many varieties that come on over five or six months rather than the two-month window that one variety would have. So, your tree is working hard to support fruit for much of the year compared to a one-variety tree. This is just a theory that would benefit from more investigation. Ideally, you would be pumping the tree full of nitrogen during the growing season, and switching to something higher in potassium and magnesium in the fall. Magnesium transports carbohydrates from leaves to roots, and potassium stores the energy in the roots to support next year's fruit. From what I have read, avocados don't need a lot of phosphorous and, since that stays in the soil and can actually build up, I reduce phosphorous levels in the future. Try kelp meal for K and trace elements. You might need more calcium and magnesium to offset all that potassium.
Good points but your soil types and rainfall will have a big impact on phosphorus. Our rainfall is 65” yearly +\~ and our phosphorus will leach out quickly. Our Ag. Dept recommends 10/54/0 for avocado and similar orchard crops. Pretty crazy.
avocado tree are nitrogen hogs .. don't need fancy fertilizer .. do very well just use animal manure of any kind,, it wont burn root at all.. just do top dressing .. i load mine with dog poop , rabbit poop .. horse poop .. it grew almost 2x per year on average .. extremely healthy ,, i have to cut them just to keep in manageable height .. and fruit like crazy..
Yea , when I lived in Santa Cruz, Ca I visited a commercial avocado orchard , the trees were producing very good, but there was one has near his hog pen, was producing 5 times the number of fruit as the others
Hi can you tell me why the young leaves on my avo tree's are shriveling up and tearing apart they don't grow big they just shrivel up and this is happening mostly above the fence line
I have 2 nice sized Avocado trees (Hass 7' and 5') from seeds but never fertilized them. Just re-potted with new soil as I move up pot sizes. i don't want to hit them too hard with fertilizer. what should I use and how much? one tree is not as green as the other lately but still seems fine. I have 2 small sized avocado trees about 1-2' height. I find I have no idea how to keep them out of trouble or how to save one if it falters. any tips appreciated . also I have to keep them in pots because every tree I planted in the ground here has died.
0-10-10 is the wrong mix for avocado trees: try 10-6-4. And yes, if you get a massive fruit year (whether naturally or because you spiked it with fertilizer), the tree will tend to rest next year.

You are very welcome!
Nice video Jeff, very interesting, thanks for sharing.
Glad you liked it.
Thanks is fairly cold in winter here an the leaves are above the fence line

Thanks Peter, happy growing!

Yea it’s been a crazy winter.
My tree is flowering, but nowhere near the amount of blooms as that’s year.

Great video Jeff I have a fuerte avocado tree what do you think should I but cow manure
I’ve never used it on avocados, but I think we’ll rotted and with a thick mulch layer might work
Thank you😊

Hi Julia, I have sprayed with garden Phos . Important to spray whiles roots are rapidly growing. Spring and fall seem best times.
@@TropicalGardenGuy Thank you.
I have some grafted ones I brought gonna plant about 4 together in a half of barrel will that work
Yes for a year or two

Could be right Cindy thanks for your input.
In years past , the multiple grafts haven’t seemed to affect fruit production. But I’ll keep an eye on it.

Have you tried girdling your tree? I’ve seen videos on it and it’s supposed to help those trees that alternate bear fruit.
No I haven’t

Good evening sir thanks for sharing your farming idea what type of avocado is good for oil making Alice
I believe that the Mexican varieties are the oiliest
Any idea if I can use this holly tone for dwarf mango trees as well? Same amount?
Yup
It’s going to dip Into the 50s daytime here in the bay, will it affect the flowering/pollination ?
Yea it’s supposed to be in low 6’s here.
I don’t think it will affect it too much
Hi can you tell me why the young leaves on my avo tree's are shriveling up and tearing apart they don't grow big they just shrivel up and this is happening mostly above the fence line
Hard to say, perhaps wind?

It all depend on a number of things, but in a huge pot, i give an avocado tree about 1/4 cup twice a year of Hollytone evergreen fert
1/4 cup all at once? where do I get this fertilizer?
I get at Home Depot .
It’s organic and very mild.
And shouldn’t burn if you follow directions on bag.
Could the weather cold winter cause lack of blooming?
It could. That was my first thought.
Then I watched last years video.
It was so different this year.
I thought that too my trees bloomed 2 months later than usual and with noticeable less flowering
You said you used to espoma fertilizer which one did you use?
Evergreen
How many times do you fertilize with chemicals fertilizer and the schedule
3 times per year. Spring, summer, fall.
Follow the amounts on fertilizer bag.
@@TropicalGardenGuy
Foliar Feed or soil drench
What time of year do you use fertilizer
Spring and fall

Yea i wouldnt use 0-10-10 by itself. Its a bloom booster food.
so you're saying Avocados don't like much Phosphorus or Phosphate (I forgot which )
Certain avocado tree fruit only every other year
Yup
