I love that Myria is not the typical 32bit era villain. She truly believes mankind needs her protection and you fight her for your own personal motivations. It's not that the fate of the world is at stake. If anything, you are the one taking down the only being that can guarantee the stability of the entire world, you kill the mother of earth without knowing the consequences. This is also where the continuity of the first 3 games end (as much as I love IV) leaving open the question of wether or not we need a god to take care of us, but ending in a hopeful note. This game is a masterpiece.
I liked her. She was an interesting concept of a villain that wasn't acting out of hartred or megalomania, but out of fear and paranoia for the things she loved. She was basically a destructively overprotective mother. Fou Lu was ok, and the segments where you control him actually make you understand the character better, which contributes to him being a well constructed villain. But overall I thought Myria was more unique, and that made her more memorable for me.
I think exactly the same. She isn't even a villain if you will, as all of her actions come from the most pure intentions. She wants to protect and to preserve. When daydreaming of a BoF remake, I actually can see the sadness in her facial expression and voice when she realizes that there is no other option but to fight Ryu, in order to "safe" the world from his "foolishness".
I used to think that too, but if you consider that since in BOF1 she had a child-like appearance it may be possible she was a child god being destructive just for fun, while in BOF3 she has matured. That and after she's defeated, when she's alone and her station is crumbling, she shows doubt over her actions, not anger at the brood... she genuinely wanted to protect the world, she was just paranoid about the brood waging war against each other again, as they indeed have a very destructive power. I mean, she could go by the logic of "if i managed to cause a war between them in the past, then anyone could" and decided she didn't want to take any risks. Of course, that doesn't justify any of her actions, just explains them. The brood never deserved to be exterminated, and myria didn't have the right to make the decisions on behalf of humanity just because she was a god. To me she is a villain who had good intentions, but a horrible and twisted way of carrying them.
Such an amazing Boss Theme. I also played this when it was hot off the press in 1997. Myria had some of the most beautifully grotesque animations I've seen in a video game (especially then)! *SPOILERS* When she all of a sudden looks pregnant, and a bunch of snakes burst out of her stomach, or even worse - her Holocaust spell begins with her face melting off like in Raider's of the Lost Ark. Holy shit! I was 11 when I first beat this, and it scared me more than Resident Evil did! I'm so glad Capcom gained the rights to released this one here! Squaresoft would have given her a bikini top (oh yeah, the Final Boss is a topless Naga Demon), or a weird dress to cover up the snakes... This game is an example of a perfect JRPG is what I'm getting at!

Her whole vibe during the fight was evil and frightening. I love how peco is so quiet through the game and then at the end he takes no shit off myria when you find out he's really yggdrasil. Everyone always picks rei over peco but peco is one bad ass character if you take the time to level him.

As I already said on another vid, she considers the party members as her children, but also as enemies : they don't want her protection any more, driving her to craziness. Myria is obsessed by the fate of the planet, and forgot what was really important in life. She's a crazed, lost person trying to protect what she loves in the most wrong way possible.
Party: Ryu, Rei, Momo. Turn 1: Ryu uses Fusion Gene for dragon-tiger Hybrid form. Rei goes Weretiger. Momo uses Target to make Rei focus on Myria. For the next 5-6 turns: Ryu uses Shadowwalk (8 AP, guaranteed crit) Rei smashes face. Momo keeps party healed when needed, otherwise uses Might to boost Ryu/Rei's attack power. Ryu and Rei both get EX turns due to being *stupidly* fast. 5-6 turns later: Scrape Myria off the walls.
Ryu: Kaiser Breath is the strongest Attack in the game. The dmg done is your life -/+250. A 999 Hp Ryu(mine has 900) has 2997 life in Kaiser Form, Up to 3250 Dmg per round for 0 Ap. Momo Shadowwalk can deal more than 2000 per round. A Peco with Last Resort and super combo (if u are fast) deals 2500-3000 dmg. I know that some people beat her in 3 rounds.
To WillRennar: what if myria uses sanctuary and dispels your influence over weretiger, then uses death uses death killing momo in the process, or confuses momo or the entire party.
I just replayed Breath of Fire 3 after YEARS of not playing it. I played it when I was a kid, and I got far. I got stuck on Dragonlord. So I was THIS CLOSE to the final boss. I finally beat it, and the sense of closure is immense, but also a sense of sadness. As a lover of dragons, with a deep connection to these wonderful creatures, Breath of Fire 3 has always been the best game to bring us that "Maybe the dragons AREN'T bad?" narrative. Spyro was also great for that. Breath of Fire 4 is also fantastic, but it definitely isn't as focused on the dragons. There are now plenty of great dragon games, like Age of Wonders 4 with the crazy ability to make your own dragon leader, or becoming a Gold Dragon in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. Breath of Fire, as a series, definitely helped make the idea of BEING the dragon a more viable thing for video games. Now if Capcom would just give this series another chance. Classic style JRPGs are still amazing and so addictive to play, I just played the crap out of Eiyuden Chronicle: Thousand Heroes, after all! Dethroning Myria was satisfying and intense, sometimes TERRIFYING ( that HOLOCAUST attack ), but actually not that hard. I just had Ryu stay in true Kaiser form and kept his AP up, until I ran out of Black Porgys, Rainbow Trouts, Wisdom Seeds, and Wisdom Fruits. It was beautiful to see that gorgeous Kaiser dragon pop out again and again, such a great design that balances beauty and ferocity. I did this strategy for Dragonlord, who was shockingly kind of easy and it made me wonder why I ever got stuck on that boss like that. Dragonlord is also a beautiful and amazing dragon design. The only thing that sucks is I was hoping to see the dragons return at the ending, but the ending we do get is pretty damn good and full of hope. The ending was also full of uncertainty. Seeing Ryu and his friends looking across the desert after escaping Myria Station. They didn't regret what they did, but they knew the future was in their hands now. We also know Yggdrasil has the power to restore the desert, and is likely the parent we needed all this time... not Myria, who literally genocided a race of people. Despite the horrible slaughter... it did feel like it was implied that some dragons managed to escape underground and go into a deep sleep, ready to emerge and live life again. The problem with Myria is that it's clear she would've been willing to GENOCIDE all of humanity if humans even found destructive power... and they clearly are just as capable of that as any dragon, with the whole magic and technology thing. Myria was, like some people are saying here, being a DESTRUCTIVELY over-protective mother. I wonder if we'll ever get another game like Breath of Fire 3? It feels like there is an empty spot in my heart as a gamer, it makes me almost want to play again. I mean... I screwed up the Fairy Village big time, but I at least got EVERY FISH in the fun as hell fishing minigame. I didn't get the GooKing Sword, or the Royal Sword. There was plenty of things I could've done better or done more efficiently, but with my adult skills as a gamer the game wasn't as hard... although some parts have aged poorly, like the well water minigame and just getting ingredients for sushi. Ugh!
Man this boss fucked my ass UP first time i played this game. And im pretty sure she wasn't laughing upon being hit. Those were like weak cries from a goddess : / Holocaust made my heart jump though, with her pretty little face melting into an abyss though. damn..
Another cool effect is the glowing runes covering her body whenever she cast Venom. It gave the impression that you were fighting an otherworldly horror.
Whether it's the first Breath of Fire or the third one, Myria will always be one of the biggest bitches in RPG history, story wise or battle. I think we can agree. For the record, I love this track. Probably my favorite in the whole game.
In SMT 2, you actually can fight and kill God. He clearly stated that he created humanity and wants worship from only the chosen who are without free will.

Sephiroth is a great end-boss for FF7 because of his relationship with Cloud and just how menacing he is. But Myria is just such a better final boss. The narrative behind her and the writing for each character's motivation is great. Each character has a truly compelling reason for wanting to defeat her, maybe with the exception of Momo/Peco. I just love the storytelling in this game.
Momo's and Peco's motivations don't come from this game, but in earlier games; they're both remnants/reincarnations of dead gods that Myria has killed or dethroned in her desire to be the ONLY god humanity worships.
lol i used to fight the godess for fun and sometimes just to hear the music, I'm nearly 19 and I still play this on PSP :O At one point i trained forever in the corridors before her after beatin her when ryu was about lvl 53-54, I trained all my characters up to about lvl 63 (not easy even with monopolize) and then fought her again every few lvls, the difficulty never really changed and after to finish her u get every single item back anyway (moon Tears ftw), awesome final boss theme and boss!
And let's not forget her glare attack, which has resulted in quite a few Game Overs (it functions like petrification, so two dead and one incapacitated by glare is a wipe).
I remember my first with Myria it was so close she cast Sirocco wiped the entire team except ryu who'd guts then proceeded to use super combo x 9 hitting for 1200ish finishing her off.
Anyone ever go for the mage party? Ryu, Nina and Momo Momo for assist and heal magic, Nina for offensive magic and Ryu for a battlemage, I had him use magic most of the game and then trained him in pure power from level 40 to lvl 50, he was the best Ryu I ever created. A brick load of AP and HP, really intelligent to deal a punch with magic but then could become essentially Super Saiyan at any point XD
I gotta agree with you. The Myria in BoF1 just scared me with her appearence. BoF3's Myria gave me nightmares with her "Holocaust" attack. It's nasty, especially when you don't expect "that" to happen O.o.
@pousaechao I hope a 6th installment comes out...with this type of game world mapping (I love that you start fighting where ever you stand, instead of switching battle screens!) Maybe add more species like Turtle girls or Insect men ...
Ryu as berserk kaiser, equiped with a flame elemental weapon, everybody else abosorbing fire attacks took a while but nobody ever dropped below 90% health
My team was Rei, Ryu. Garr. Namely just because of the fact they are some of my favorites, along with how i leveled them on this run. Oh and the fact Garr is just a natural tank x3 and rei is fast as anything.
@pousaechao you have to give it a chance. I put off Dragon Quarter for YEARS before i finally decided "meh i have the disc might as well give it a shot". Played it. First it got addictive, then it just got madly addictive. It's a bit different, but trust me it has the same feeling as the other ones. Absolutely amazing game.
Ryu: perfect kaiser + trance + radiance. Focus × 2 then aura Garr: shadow walk with fairy or spirit ring and beast spear ( missable spear found after defeating the blue guardian and checking his ashes) Rei: lead chain formation For speed. War shout and super combo
Thunder Warrior, Ice Ring and Fire Ring. Meditate x2 and Aura, 1-2 hits usually. Rei with a soul gems and lighting ring, same on Momo. Rei would steal their soul gyms with pilfer, Momo would bring back anyone she had to. I don't really do the training that much, but I manage to do this without dying a whole lot and i get a bunch of soul gems.
Well the elder didnt say he SHOULDNT fight the goddes so he didnt really showed his point of view on Myria´s true nature But i agree with what you say, there's always 2 sides to the story, and the fact that we argue whether she was a villain or not proves this is a great game and I think we can agree on that one :P
@onemike951 Well he was able to keep his powers as he agreed to isolate himself and remain in Eden. As for getting to Caer Xhan I always had thought that was strange, perhaps Myria brought him herself.
This game wss the only one as a kid the I wss interested in enough to beat. I had a lot of trouble with venom first run by I managed to beat her with weretiger and influence and Ryu's Kaiser. I had to use several wisdom fruits. Talk about doing it the hard way! Meh I was a child.
***** Well I knew to save the Wisdom Fruits. But I believe I was 12 years old first run of this game. On a generation 1 PlayStation with a mod chip my cousins boyfriend installed for me. :p

My party used for this fight is Peco(tank of beastly stats), Momo(physical powerhouse with triple might and Shadowwalk), and Ryu who I made into an AP battery so that he can stay in Kaiser form for the whole battle. Peco just spams Super Combo(1-1.5k after using a few War Shouts, Ryu spams Aura and Bonebreak in Kaiser form(Aura is like 2-3kish, and Momo Stacks up the Mights and throws out some 2k+ Shadowwalks... all in all a fun fight
Myria isn't a demon, she's a Naga Goddess like Bleu (Deis), she's not really evil either. For whatever reason she thought it necessary to give people demon like powers to 'protect' themselves against the Brood. That's why people like Rei, Balio & Sunder and Mykiba had their powers.
Rei, Ryu and Garr for this fight all the way. Myrmidon form, Weretiger form and Garr doing Garr things (well, in this case directing Rei until someone drops).
Forget 5, she scared me at 25 lol..seriously she's like the largest scaled RPG boss of all time (or at least the ones I've played, and I've played alot).

I think she would have been a much more interesting boss if she were a bit beefier and made sanctuary rarely used. That way we would have to rely on buffs until the next sanctuary instead of just attacking and occasionally healing

turning rei into a weretiger while having him equipped with the heatshovel is the only way to get around having to waste a turn using "influence". dragon armor on ryu and a fire ring for the third character. done deal. either decent damage or a free turn healing.
The monsters in the hallways before you get to myria's area were harder than myria. They at least managed to kill me a few times, unlike her. Maybe those monsters should have been the ones forming earth instead of her.
venom aint so bad if u are prepaired for that ^^ for example equiping your party to counter the entire vemon makes it real easy as you can just heal out the other moves by loads of vitamin this goes espec if u fight with both tank garr and tank peco (warrior or myrmiton) warrior ryu
-Bottled- Kaiser eats too much AP for most people's version of Ryu, if you build him as an AP tank then he can do that, BUT... generally Myrmidon is best form for this fight
Something felt bad about this boss, it wasn't like in the first game where she was an evil monster, or in the second where her spawn was a literal demon, this time she seemed different

It was beautiful to see that gorgeous Kaiser dragon pop out again and again, such a great design that balances beauty and ferocity. I did this strategy for Dragonlord, who was shockingly kind of easy and it made me wonder why I ever got stuck on that boss like that. Dragonlord is also a beautiful and amazing dragon design.
The only thing that sucks is I was hoping to see the dragons return at the ending, but the ending we do get is pretty damn good and full of hope. The ending was also full of uncertainty. Seeing Ryu and his friends looking across the desert after escaping Myria Station. They didn't regret what they did, but they knew the future was in their hands now. We also know Yggdrasil has the power to restore the desert, and is likely the parent we needed all this time... not Myria, who literally genocided a race of people.
Despite the horrible slaughter... it did feel like it was implied that some dragons managed to escape underground and go into a deep sleep, ready to emerge and live life again. The problem with Myria is that it's clear she would've been willing to GENOCIDE all of humanity if humans even found destructive power... and they clearly are just as capable of that as any dragon, with the whole magic and technology thing. Myria was, like some people are saying here, being a DESTRUCTIVELY over-protective mother.
I wonder if we'll ever get another game like Breath of Fire 3? It feels like there is an empty spot in my heart as a gamer, it makes me almost want to play again. I mean... I screwed up the Fairy Village big time, but I at least got EVERY FISH in the fun as hell fishing minigame. I didn't get the GooKing Sword, or the Royal Sword. There was plenty of things I could've done better or done more efficiently, but with my adult skills as a gamer the game wasn't as hard... although some parts have aged poorly, like the well water minigame and just getting ingredients for sushi. Ugh!

Another cool effect is the glowing runes covering her body whenever she cast Venom. It gave the impression that you were fighting an otherworldly horror.
The song really makes me feel like I'm facing something outworldly and beyond my comprehension... excellent game with a very nice OST !!!

Whether it's the first Breath of Fire or the third one, Myria will always be one of the biggest bitches in RPG history, story wise or battle. I think we can agree. For the record, I love this track. Probably my favorite in the whole game.
Such an epic final boss theme song. It was so awesome. BOF3 was one of my favs and BOF 2.
Easily one of the most Beast Mode boss themes in any RPG. This and Dragon Lord's battle theme are examples of how a good fight theme are done.
This fight would be like 3 people standing up together and fighting God or the Virgin Mary.

In SMT 2, you actually can fight and kill God. He clearly stated that he created humanity and wants worship from only the chosen who are without free will.

Sephiroth is a great end-boss for FF7 because of his relationship with Cloud and just how menacing he is.
But Myria is just such a better final boss. The narrative behind her and the writing for each character's motivation is great. Each character has a truly compelling reason for wanting to defeat her, maybe with the exception of Momo/Peco. I just love the storytelling in this game.
Momo's and Peco's motivations don't come from this game, but in earlier games; they're both remnants/reincarnations of dead gods that Myria has killed or dethroned in her desire to be the ONLY god humanity worships.

lol i used to fight the godess for fun and sometimes just to hear the music, I'm nearly 19 and I still play this on PSP :O
At one point i trained forever in the corridors before her after beatin her when ryu was about lvl 53-54, I trained all my characters up to about lvl 63 (not easy even with monopolize) and then fought her again every few lvls, the difficulty never really changed and after to finish her u get every single item back anyway (moon Tears ftw), awesome final boss theme and boss!

And let's not forget her glare attack, which has resulted in quite a few Game Overs (it functions like petrification, so two dead and one incapacitated by glare is a wipe).

I remember my first with Myria it was so close she cast Sirocco wiped the entire team except ryu who'd guts then proceeded to use super combo x 9 hitting for 1200ish finishing her off.
I can hear the tune of Spoiled by Regret in here. It's the theme that plays when you reunite with Rei at the treehouse.
It's a shame that Garr petrified himself and stay behind... I liked him, he would be a great partner for Ryu.
My god, the first time playing the game and comes to Myria to know the truth. The wole conversation and the finale battle...EPIC!!!
Anyone ever go for the mage party? Ryu, Nina and Momo
Momo for assist and heal magic, Nina for offensive magic and Ryu for a battlemage, I had him use magic most of the game and then trained him in pure power from level 40 to lvl 50, he was the best Ryu I ever created. A brick load of AP and HP, really intelligent to deal a punch with magic but then could become essentially Super Saiyan at any point XD

The Myria in BoF1 just scared me with her appearence. BoF3's Myria gave me nightmares with her "Holocaust" attack. It's nasty, especially when you don't expect "that" to happen O.o.
Not to mention that myria has 20,000 HP and 10,000 AP. And that one move... that I've ever seen.

Ryu as berserk kaiser, equiped with a flame elemental weapon, everybody else abosorbing fire attacks took a while but nobody ever dropped below 90% health
I would either go Myrmidon or Kaiser for this fight. Myrmidon for brute damage, Kaiser for Bonebreak and principle.
My team was Rei, Ryu. Garr. Namely just because of the fact they are some of my favorites, along with how i leveled them on this run. Oh and the fact Garr is just a natural tank x3 and rei is fast as anything.

Played it. First it got addictive, then it just got madly addictive. It's a bit different, but trust me it has the same feeling as the other ones. Absolutely amazing game.

Garr: shadow walk with fairy or spirit ring and beast spear ( missable spear found after defeating the blue guardian and checking his ashes)

I was wondering, does Celerity works when in Kaiser form? That would be a massive stat boost.
Myria is really easy if you take full advantage of the crazy dragon abilities you have at the end of the game, and AP-restoring items.

999 Hp Ryu behemoth form => meteor => archmage one hit
Thunder Warrior, Ice Ring and Fire Ring. Meditate x2 and Aura, 1-2 hits usually. Rei with a soul gems and lighting ring, same on Momo. Rei would steal their soul gyms with pilfer, Momo would bring back anyone she had to. I don't really do the training that much, but I manage to do this without dying a whole lot and i get a bunch of soul gems.

Well he was able to keep his powers as he agreed to isolate himself and remain in Eden. As for getting to Caer Xhan I always had thought that was strange, perhaps Myria brought him herself.
This game wss the only one as a kid the I wss interested in enough to beat. I had a lot of trouble with venom first run by I managed to beat her with weretiger and influence and Ryu's Kaiser. I had to use several wisdom fruits. Talk about doing it the hard way! Meh I was a child.
Next time you play, you should give Momo Shadowwalk.

Myria is pretty hard to beat i needed about 10 minutes to beat her but the theme is cool. thanks ;)

My party used for this fight is Peco(tank of beastly stats), Momo(physical powerhouse with triple might and Shadowwalk), and Ryu who I made into an AP battery so that he can stay in Kaiser form for the whole battle. Peco just spams Super Combo(1-1.5k after using a few War Shouts, Ryu spams Aura and Bonebreak in Kaiser form(Aura is like 2-3kish, and Momo Stacks up the Mights and throws out some 2k+ Shadowwalks... all in all a fun fight

Myria isn't a demon, she's a Naga Goddess like Bleu (Deis), she's not really evil either. For whatever reason she thought it necessary to give people demon like powers to 'protect' themselves against the Brood. That's why people like Rei, Balio & Sunder and Mykiba had their powers.
Rei, Ryu and Garr for this fight all the way. Myrmidon form, Weretiger form and Garr doing Garr things (well, in this case directing Rei until someone drops).
Forget 5, she scared me at 25 lol..seriously she's like the largest scaled RPG boss of all time (or at least the ones I've played, and I've played alot).
As if fighting an ancient serpentine goddess at the far end of an orbital station far above an immense desert wasn't enough, there's this track.

If you combine Kaiser+Radiance+Failure you have a controlable Kaiser stronger than the berserk one.
It is Kaiser+Radiance+Trance. Failure just weakens the Kaiser form.
Ryu, Nina and Rei? lol, that`s exactly my final and best party.
@onemike951 turning rei into a weretiger during nearly any boss fight is almost guaranteed suicide.

I think she would have been a much more interesting boss if she were a bit beefier and made sanctuary rarely used. That way we would have to rely on buffs until the next sanctuary instead of just attacking and occasionally healing

The monsters in the hallways before you get to myria's area were harder than myria. They at least managed to kill me a few times, unlike her. Maybe those monsters should have been the ones forming earth instead of her.

venom aint so bad if u are prepaired for that ^^ for example equiping your party to counter the entire vemon makes it real easy as you can just heal out the other moves by loads of vitamin this goes espec if u fight with both tank garr and tank peco (warrior or myrmiton) warrior ryu

-Bottled- Kaiser eats too much AP for most people's version of Ryu, if you build him as an AP tank then he can do that, BUT... generally Myrmidon is best form for this fight

Judging by the story, Fou-Lu shouldn't be that stronger. But gameplay-wise, well, Myria's pretty easy tbh.
