This was so good Emma! Every new gardener should start here so they won't be intimidated or overwhelmed. Just start with the basics and everything else will just come. 👍🏻🌱

Inspired by Tony Smith, Lifesabooch, Green Side Up, Malcolm Kingswell, Jessie at Plot 37 and you. Not sure when I'm going to find time to watch all the blogs and still get the work done on my Allotment. Have access to a large plot (0.75 of an acre). Plan is to create a community resource. Have a few volunteers in the team so far and made connections with a local food bank and support groups for survivors of domestic violence and people suffering from anxiety. I'm going to record the progress, not initially for blogging reasons but for progress reporting. Thank you for inspiring me. My seed potatoes will start chitting this week I think. Red Duke of York is one of mine. No idea what I am letting myself in for. Very little experience. But I find myself really excited. Time to graft ......

When I had an allotment, my neighbour only grew spuds, onions and kale. 3 huge beds with just those 3 things in, that he rotated each year 😂 he was a lovely guy. I miss my allotment so much. But I just didn’t have time.

Good suggestions Emma [me thinks Monty Don would approve]! Now, if you decide to grow cucumbers, trellis them - better production and more bug free because of added air circulation. Me thinks you be saying that gardening is a life long learning experience...and I'll add should be a journey full of love, laughter and your vino of choice! Be well - many blessings! Cheers...

First thing I arranged was for a mate of mine to arrive with a flame thrower and after digging over the first layer, a spades depth, he went in and flamed the lot. Yes it kills worms and bacteria but over time these will grow back and if done properly you will have very fertile soil. That is after arranging to have a lorry load of Horse Manure delivered and spread, dug in and left covered for 6 weeks. So think of me as a helper but no longer a grower, as I was fed up having my crops stolen or wrecked by Neds.

Hi Emma! This was so well done. I think a new gardener would get some great tips and inspiration from you. The only things I would add are to also look at slope and drainage (level out beds or plant things that like moisture, like celery, asparagus, cabbage, cress, rhubarb, spinach, and peas, in wet spots) and if you have slugs/snails (who doesn’t?!), consider not using wooden raised beds (the wood gives them more places to hide and breed). It was great to see how you cleared your plot. So much work, but so worth it.

6 months into having an allotment in South London and just ordered the shed. Seeing your vid on putting it up (way back), I'm looking forward to the trials and tribulations of putting it up in mid Feb with my other half. 'What are you doing' is my wife's favourite phrase! lol. Great vids by the way.

Hi Emma, after almost 3 years of waiting, today I got an allotment! It is around 63m2 in size which is not too overwhelming. I'm a newbie gardener. I grow some vegetables on my roof garden. Due to the wind and too much direct sunlight all day if sunny, and also because all need to be in planters, my roof garden is not really thriving. I'm so excited but I am also a little scared to start it. Those allotment tenants are so nice and there is a great community feel I've never had in london. I've subscribed your channel to learn all the tips from you! ❤

Great advice ... I've done my experimental year in my Back garden ..I did the No Dig Method.. it was a Suck it and See approach.. with great success.. lost a few items but learned from that so I'm now the proud owner of an allotment.. taken on the day Storm Babet hit .. so very soggy introduction.. but I'm taking on your advice .. Excited!! thankyou . ❤
