  • This is a small taste of what happnes on a typical Twitch live stream! I've decided to start uploading highlights from my live streams, since I play upwards of 9 hours a week on Twitch. This piece from the FFVI OST was recently requested. I had never heard it before and wasn't expecting to play the entire thing (it's almost 20 minutes long!), but the more I played, the more I wanted to play! It hits so many of the great themes from FFVI. Hope you enjoy! I'll also make a TH-cam playlist just for my live stream uploads-- Watch live at / karacomparetto

      Yeah, that was incredible for not even having listened to it beforehand. Uematsu is one of those composers without any formal education, so there's unreasonable switches in key and technique all over the place. Even if it's been somewhat cleaned up for the piano books.

      @@Zuron Could those changes in key and technique be accounted by the fact that this piece is a medley of 14 separate character themes plus the finale?
      As a complete non-expert, I wonder how feasible it is to combine the huge diversity of musical styles from all the character themes into one continuous composition, without having some significant shifts along the way.

      Yeah, it's unfortunate (though very reasonable) that the piano arrangement doesn't replicate the part from the original piece where Celes and Locke's themes play in harmony for a few bars when he dives to save her from falling. It totally sounds like the two themes were written intentionally to harmonize, even though there is no clear parallel between the two. They just fit together and it sounds like magic.

      I just star crying when Edgar's transitions into Sabin's and stop.... at the very end. maybe. This track perfectly expresses the payoff for actually sticking together and working through your issues even when the whole world collapses round you, and almost all different themes and pieces are rranged in a way that reflects how much they've been through and worked out together. To the unitiated, it's a nice beautiful track. To anyone who finished FF6 it's just..... :,)

      Which is why the FF7 remake, FF9 and FF12, all of the FF4 remakes.... It's all good and all. But the true masterpiece to some of us is FF6. I rate FF6 on the level of the original Starwars Trilogy, that's pretty top notch in my book. What an awesome performance by Kara too. Gotta start watching her streams if I can eventually.

    • @DavidTimothy
      @DavidTimothy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      For real. FFVI was the pinnacle of the 16-bit JRPG and this soundtrack was arguably the pinnacle of Nobuo Uematsu's career. He's said a few different times it was his favorite OST of the series and he poured his heart into the dozens of themes. The way this ending song pulls them all together is just a perfect representation of the masterpiece that was FFVI.

  • @rahn45
    @rahn45 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    I smiled a little at the "Is there an orchestral version" bit, considering the original 16-bit version was rendered so beautifully despite the sound limitations. I consider FF6 to be Uematsu's finest work when it comes to telling a story with music. The crazy part of it all is "Balance is Restored" is essentially the 2nd half of "Dancing Mad" a four piece movement that lasts 17 minutes. So combining both gives you around a 38 minute conclusion and send-off to the story.

    • @DavidTimothy
      @DavidTimothy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No way, I never thought of it as a "second part of dancing mad"! That's a super interesting way to think of it. I'm going to have to listen to them together I think.

    • @rahn45
      @rahn45 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavidTimothy The game starts off with "Omen" in where half of it is essentially a mixture of the Empire Theme and Terra's Theme, so in my mind the proper thematic bookend to that is Dancing Mad and Balance is Restored; more so considering that opening notes of Omen is embedded inside Dancing Mad before the Kefka fight, and the end of Dancing Mad is actually presented as sad and somber; which tonally does fit into the beginning of Balance is Restored.

  • @Merrinen
    @Merrinen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I really recommend watching the ending of the game with the visuals that go alongside this piece. They really pushed the limits of the SNES with that they did with this piece, the graphics capabilities, and storage space that was available. A true show of respect for the player who pushed through the game to get then smacked with this. They did this at a time it was still very common for end of the games be done with very little effort, at worst just being the same Game Over screen you'd get if you lost all your lifes. Then in contrast you have this... you've come to the end of your journey and still would like the game to go on as it's been good, but then you get this that bids you farewell. And it just surprises you by going on, just like you'd like the game to go on, and it teases a few times where it could end yet does not, but when you get to the very end you know now it is getting to the point that you have to let go. The End.
    Thank you for bringing back the memory of completing the game for the first time!

    • @umbrascitor2079
      @umbrascitor2079 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Christ yes this is relatable. After the ending I just sat there for like an hour while the Crystal Theme played over the end screen, being sad that the game was over. And even the Crystal Theme playing on a 30 second loop was evocative enough to nearly bring me to tears.
      This is the only game I ever finished that I genuinely felt like I was not done playing and I refused to accept that it was over.

    One thing I was waiting for that the piano arrangement seems to miss (sadly, but very reasonably!) is that when the Celes theme transitions to the Locke theme, there are a few measures where the two themes join in harmony to celebrate their relationship, and the way their themes blend together in the original soundtrack is just gorgeous. I think it would have ended up sounding like incomprehensible noise for a piano arrangement, though. Setzer's theme already sounded a tad cluttered at the start and that one's supposed to be pretty simple, haha.
    This performance was extraordinary, more so for the fact you were sight reading. I wasn't expecting that when I clicked -- I was just curious about how the piano arrangement sounds. As someone who can barely read music, I'm thoroughly impressed. Very glad I stopped by!

    I don't know of an orchestrated version (other than the original SNES version, of course), but there is a terrific violin + piano duet that was part of the Balance and Ruin tribute to Final Fantasy VI, performed by Schnabubula and Gabe Terraciano. Just search "Balance and Ruin Ending Suite." It's fantastic.

    Watching you play this song reminds me of exactly why you're my favorite pianist on all of youtube. You played fantastically for that being your first time, but watching you learn to appreciate it more and more as you played was magic.
    To my knowledge there is no orchestrated version of this song, and it's a crying shame, because it's one of Uematsu's best songs. My only guess as to why is because it's another 10+ minute song from a game that already has produced The Dream Oath Opera at 23 minutes long, and Dancing Mad at 12 minutes long. If you're performing a concert that lasts 2 hours, and you're trying to pick a few songs from each game, you've got 50 minutes worth of music for FF6 covered by only 3 songs. Throw in the 8 minute long Opening Theme of FF6, and you're at roughly an hour. I think there's just so much already covered in FF6 that it just sits farther down the list. It was almost 15 years before Dancing Mad got it's dues, and this is the song that directly follows that in the game. And I've STILL never heard a good Kefka cover!
    Regardless, I wish I could do more than just like and subscribe here on youtube. You're the best Kara!
    EDIT: There IS this, from Distant Worlds 3, but it's not the whole shebang.
