It's been years, but I seem to recall the film cut to a scene of the sanitary pad (not a tampon) smoldering in the heater grate, then cut back to Poitier, who then expelled the boys from the room and delivered his rebuke of the girls in 'private'.

I saw the movie for the first time as a young child and that scene made a powerful impression on me, even though I didn't understand what he saw. I subsequently guessed, and guessed correctly as I read the book in high school. Years later when I went on the IMDB message board, there were several threads about this scene, and I was surprised at how many people actually didn't know what it was, and were guessing drugs. a bra, a baby?!

Oh yes. He is one of the greatest actors of all time. There's a lot of actors who have tried to channel him in film. Some have come close in some films. Such as Daniel Kaluuya in Judas and the black messiah and Get Out. Mahershala Ali in Green Book and Swan Song. And John Boyega in Attack the Block, Small Axe and Detroit. I even think John looks almost just like a young Sidney Poirier crossed with touches of Denzel. He has some of both of their mannerisms when they were young. Mark my words, the best is yet to come for John Boyega. He is the next Sidney as an actor to me. And I think he will have that type of leading man career similar to him too

A sign of the times the film waa made. Would teachers now still address a girl playing a prank of that kind - absolutely- would they use the language he uses - absolutely not.
