This Doctor REACTS video is on Brooklyn Nine Nine. It's from episode 2 of season 5 when Jake is wrongly imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. I'm a forensic psychiatrist so I can't wait to delve into this to talk about the criminal and mental health components and compare my experience in the UK to their depiction. This video covers mental health in prisons, segregation and solitary confinement, stimulants and much more.

i remember watching it and being so glad he seemed to actually be treating his job as the life or death (for other people) sentence it really was instead of just playing die hard all day
truely can never hear anyone talk abt pcp without remembering that for THREE SEASONS on buffy the vampire slayer the excuse the town made for vampires was “a teen gang on pcp.” wild.
I also loved Jake's beard and miss it.

It's always thrown me off that PCP also stands for "primary care physician". I feel like that's a very unfortunate convergence of acronyms.

Can confirm: PCP is bigger in the states, in the late 90s early 2000s, when I was pre teen and a teen, it was a common trope for criminals to be "hopped up on angel dust" and to basically 'hulk out' on people. It was always discussed as a drug with the reputation equivalent of crack - with implications that PCP is used by only low class people. This is in line with America's stigma of drug use to begin with and the stigma of working class individuals 'causing their own problems bc of simply being individuals that are not capable of higher level decision making (placing the blame of poverty onto the impoverished rather than circumstances that often lead to substance abuse that is caused by socioeconomic factors that the government largely influences).
Also, you are my favorite psychiatrist and have been wonderful to learn new ways to phrase things regarding mental health, that makes it possible to phrase references to the people living with disorders in a neutral way when writing academic papers about mental illness rather than the default of 'having mental health issue makes you lesser/a subject". You use very humanizing phrasing, and it's wonderful that you practice this irl but also educate the public so that this practice can spread.
You also represent your medical training so well in discussing the chemistry aspects of mental health and what is affected when doing these reviews. Wonderfully positive to watch, keep doing the good work!

THANK YOU for putting out correct information about fentanyl. EMTs would also end up in the hospital or dying from overdosing on fentanyl all the time if it worked that way, but only cops are under that delusion, it seems.
While their reaction could be psychological, they also, oddly, do not react like someone overdosing. When you realize they are fine, watching it can be wuite amusing lol
PCP was a big thing in the States back in the 80s.
Also in the States, because ketamine is legal for prescription in any case, unlike most other drugs, there are clinics that specialize in safe infusions of it, based on a very few small studies showing benefits for depression. In my case, it was a legal way to have a safe 45min hallucinogenic experience.
What’s weird is that my sense of time and hearing is unchanged. They suggest that you play music the whole time, and that there not be spoken words in that music. One time, my Bluetooth headphones unpaired mid-way, leaving me in silence for an undetermined amount of time. It was not super pleasant.
I’m told that the inventor of LSD first got high from it by a drop landing on his hand. I haven’t checked this fact.
I’ve never met a US ADHD patient who was prescribed meth. Various regular amphetamines, but not meth. Not that I speak for the country, but I spent nearly 50 years there.
I just checked and surprisingly, meth is a Schedule II drug in the US. So theoretically, someone could prescribe it. I've never heard of any doctor doing so, especially when there's so many other, safer options, but it's possible they could.
I figured it would be Schedule I, where they say it has no known therapeutic benefit, thereby making it completely illegal. Things like heroin and ecstasy are Schedule I. Then again, so are cannabis and psilocybin - things that _are_ shown to have some therapeutic benefits - so there's still some political motivation involved in how they schedule things.
But I would think at least meth would be Schedule I. It doesn't seem to do anything but destroy people.
Did the infusions help you? I'm on ketamine therapy too, but my psychiatrist and I are doing daily, low-dose, sublingual gel tabs. More accessible and way cheaper, without the tripping.

I would love to hear your / him analyse Prison Playbook. It's one of my favourite shows and is set 99% in prison for a year. 16 episodes. A possibly unfamiliar culture and many different personalities.
the most commonly used amphetamine for adhd medication in the u.s. is not methamphetamine, it's dextroamphetamine (brand name Adderall). the chemical differences are minor, afaik they're only one molecule apart, but that extra molecule in dextroamphetamine makes it much more stable and much less dangerous. the only FDA-approved version of methamphetamine is under the brand name Desoxyn, but it's very rarely prescribed anymore.
Whenever you say you're a forensic psychiatrist, I think of the character Will Zimmerman in the scifi show Sanctuary, though I'm not sure he was an accurate portrayal of an actual forensic psychiatrist lol. Anyway, another great reaction & enjoy your trip
i am obviously not an expert i just did a year college course but i had to look up solitary confinement and there is so much research on how bad it is for mental health, very interesting but horrifying too, couldnt survive 5 minutes in there myself but this video just brings me back to my college course

Gonna be completely honest here. I hope no one attacks me for this:
I actually was on m*th for about 2 years. It didn’t even really make me that high, it just made me mostly normal. Turns out, after I got off of it, I started having incredibly noticeable ADHD symptoms. Unfortunately it took awhile, but eventually I was diagnosed with ADHD. It’s kinda weird because I never noticed these symptoms BEFORE I started using.
Methamphetamine is not used in America for treatment of any kind. Amphetamines are for medical use but can also be ab*sed like m*th. They are kind of similar but pretty different.

I used to work for a company which made transdermal patches for various medications. I tested the Fentanyl. It required working with pure Fentanyl, making dilutions, comparing hplc output of samples vs known, measured amounts. Simple work. We were required to have someone within arms reach to perform CPR, in case we spilled any fentanyl on our skin and lost consciousness. We never spilled any during my time there, but it was in the test. The tests had to be tested, too.
I wouldn’t make a claim that it can’t be transferred through your skin.
I think Andy Samberg’s face is a little too oval shaped for a beard to look flattering. The round and square faced guys I think pull them off better.

I disagree. I think there are some genuine black-hearted individuals who want nothing more than to do harm unto others. Some people are good and some are bad. And some are the worst of the worst.
