I'm SO happy to see the AoS content starting to come out! I can't wait to see where you go from here with future videos!!! I started in 2019 when I got a bunch of Goblins for Christmas that year. So I can attest, I was one of those people who didn't play Fantasy. But I LOVE AoS! I love the elevated setting, I love how interesting and unique all of the factions are. And you better believe I *love* the models. I own about 9 different AoS armies, all of which are over 2000 points, one of which is my (give or take) 10,000 points of Stormcast Eternals. I wouldn't have gone so deep if I didn't enjoy not just the hobby, but everything else around it, and it's for all of these reasons that I love AoS as much as I do.
Now I can agree with most of your points on AoS, except for one aspect of 3rd edition. Battle Tactics, they're simply not fun, and I hope GW doesn't keep them going into 4th edition.
So once again, thank you Arthur, thank you for brining some much needed attention to this wonderful game that doesn't get the attention or love I think it deserves.

I wanna point out the mechanic that is the cornerstone for why I quite playing 9th ed and kept playing AoS: the priority roll. On one hand it acts like a stop-gap compromise because GW refuses to join modern game design and introduce alternating activations. On the other hand, because it decides entire turn order at the start of every battle round, it becomes in practice a unique mechanic of its own. Every two turns in a game of AoS the prio roll is the fulcrum on which the battle's momentum can change wildly most notably in the form of the double turn. It adds an entire dimension of strategy. At its basic level it forces players to constantly assess how far to push things during their turn or how cagey they should play to protect themselves from getting wiped out by a double turn. At the highest levels it becomes an additional medium through which a player can game their opponent. At all levels it's an exciting moment that eliminates those IGOUGO situations at the tail end of 9th where a game could be talked through after only the first or second turn because straight IGOUGO only has 1 turn order per game whereas the prio roll creates 32 possible permutations of turn order over a full 5 round game. Before anyone complains about randomness - getting double turned is something you can and should plan for. It is routinely the same group of elite players winning major GTs and ranking the highest in the world. Accounting for the priority roll in your strategy is clearly possible, and it's clearly possible to be very good at it. Also, the competitive AoS scene is healthy and thriving. Check out TheHonestWargamer and Woehammer for stats and meta analysis. This will also be the 10th year for the AoS World Team Championships (not the GW championships) - an event that's entirely community run and organized. iirc it will be held in Amsterdam this summer.

I think aos is that good blend of flavorful rules and armies that are still tight enough yet not as crunchy as to deter a larger audience. Not as crunchy as whfb but definitely not as basic as Warhammer 10th edition. A game with mechanics surface level enough to where you can enjoy doing goofy tactics and strategies but deep enough to real dig into the minutiae of the gameplay like the priority roll.

      This is largely my sentiment.
I prefer Fantasy, but if I want to turn my brain off and still be able to do some fun and interesting things, then AoS is a good game for that. I think my biggest problem with AoS is just how God awful the setting is.

    • @spnked9516
      @spnked9516 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

@@MySuperPowerIsITouchGrass It's definitely gotten better, in some respects - at least, but it's still a far cry from what I'd call good. The crux of the problem is that the entire setting is dependent upon the End Times - some of the worst fiction the BL has ever publish - and conveniently regurgitating concepts and characters from Fantasy for brand recognition. This problem is sort of amplified by the weightlessness and lack of place locations seem to have in relation to each other.
When taken for it disparate elements, I think there is some good stuff in AoS. The Gloomspite Gitz, for example, are an interesting and logical extension of Fantasy's night goblins. As rough as parts in the book "Gloomspite" are, I think it does a pretty good job of illustrating just how nightmarish the badmoon is. The Kharadron Overlords are another example, but I think they need some more refining.
But for every decent concept AoS puts forward, it has two or three that just drag it down. Why is Sigmar just the Fantasy version of 40k's Emperor of man? Why is Morathi just able to crawl out of Slaanesh? Why is Nagash an absolute jobber at every possible opportunity? Why does the Cities of Sigmar faction not actually play into the fact that it's supposed to be a patchwork of cultures and races from both the old and new settings? Just a lot of missed opportunities or questionable decisions going on.

started playing AOS when the Seraphon (lizardmen) models finally got new sculpts last summer. I really enjoy the game, it is a lot of fun. The best way I can describe the rules for it is this: if 40K has weak faction rules but strong datasheets, AOS has VERY strong faction rules but weak datasheets. In the end it balances out in a similar way, but ends up having more interesting and thematic armies both visually and in playstyle. A direct example of this is I just played my first game vs. a Hedonites of Slaanesh army. They can, once per enemy unit per phase, up to 6 times in a turn, offer your opponent the ability to turn a dice roll into a 6. If your opponent accepts, you get D6 points that you can use for summoning or collect to gain buffs. If your opponent refuses, their unit takes D3 mortal wounds. The mechanic is incredibly fun and flavourful for both players, it's super cool.

It's secretly better than 40K, but not by such a margin that you should play it over 40K if you prefer 40K's setting.
The models are awesome and generally quite varied, as opposed to "more space marines, but we made them red this time (but you're painting them purple anyway)."
The combat is more focused on melee, meaning you'll generally have more to do during your opponent's turn. It also means your positioning is simultaneously easier to manage and harder to perfect. Apparently, that's a theme as well, as AoS is an easier setting to understand rules-wise.
You may argue that these points don't outweigh 40K's benefits, like being the older brother with the larger d- community, but then again, I never said the game was superior in every way, I just said it's low-key more fun by a slight margin. They're both Warhammer, pick space psychic fantasy or medieval magic fantasy and have a blast while your wallet is rolling in its grave.

There are a few issues that prevent me from getting fully into it though, like the wounding system being a flat roll, meaning a little crossbow is just as lethal to a peasant soldier as it is to Nagash, supreme lord of death. I also am not a fan of fixed squad sizes, but that's an issue 10th edition also has now.

Fantasy did not have a lower player count. It's a pretty common misconception.
Fantasy rarely got any significant rules updates, and by the time it was killed it still had many models that were 15+ years old. No new rules mean no reason to make new units/models. No new models means no reason for anyone to buy the old stuff again when they already have a collection.
"Terrible sales and no players" is purely corporate optics, divorced from someone within the community. It's alot more complex than just that, it's an issue with GW being historically out of touch for the past twenty years.

Aos in total is an interesting game. It certainly has some balance issues (internal once even more) but that’s more something that will never be removed.
Something I personally have a problem with aos is probably more around the lore.
I mean while the lore of aos in total is getting spread more and more, many armies just don’t get mentioned, aren’t a thread even if they should be and are just considered a joke.
So for example if I’m somebody who plays skaven or for example beasts of chaos it’s incredible hard to get any feeling for the aos lore of those armies as they don’t really get mentioned
And when they do they get mentioned so shortly or are just a joke that gets beaten down that nobody really cares.
And for that reason I personally belief is probably why so many players still prefer old world lore at least right now over that of aos.

Been a lot of fun thinking of lore for my Eldar so having more set locations for AoS would help with creating such things.

I'm having a lot of fun with AoS. It's a much more experimental version of Warhammer than 40k is. There's more variety in mission types, some of the factions have more interesting mechanics, and interestingly, only a few subfactions are head and shoulders above or below the rest of the list of factions which sit at 45-55% win rates. If anything AoS frustrates my ability to enjoy 40k because I know GW can do better, because it does better in AoS.
I like 40k, but I prefer AoS, and it's not close.

When GW invented Age of Sigmar, they were confident that the Mortal Realms world would be quick and intuitive for all fantasy players. Because at the core is the lores about the Winds of Magic and the Realm of Chaos - the most unique features of Warhammer.
But they were cruelly mistaken: for most fantasy fans, the entire metaphysics of Warhammer World is an empty phrase.
Proof: ask your fantasy friend to name from memory the names and characters of all the Winds of Magic, and I’m sure only 1 out of 10 can name them without wikipedia.

AoS is mixed for me, a lot of models in their range are great and as a chaos player, I like the fact (most) my demon models can be played in both 40k and AoS. The lore is probably the main point of contention for me and Im sure many others. On one hand I like how much they’ve expanded on the nature of chaos, its forms of worship among mortals and more major plots that actually change something about them.
On the other hand, Warhammer fantasy for me has an innate appeal for having an actual planet map in old world. This becomes more apparent when playing something like TWW3, map whoring is fun and really gives a sense of the factions in play, something that innately has an appeal that can separate from 40k. The fantasy style realm orb things in AoS take that away from me even if I learned to like them.

I think what ultimately draws me to AoS over the other two is the lack of grimdark. The "the world/galaxy is totally doomed, lets commit war crimes" attitude of 40k especially got really exhausting after a while. If the lore says everything is awful and nothing matters, why then should I care?
AoS is still a dark and brutal setting, but it has hope. There is a possibility of actually beating Choas instead of just pushing off the inevitable. A better future is possible and is worth fighting for.

And not hold AoS as some sort of morons Fantasy where the rules aren't as in depth like they were in Fantasy and how it's for normies and not true fans of the hobby (this is an opinion that I have seen from some people)

I guess for me the reason I wasn’t into AOS was the fact I was introduced to fantasy like many others through total war and I got hooked immediately to all the lore and characters. So I considered getting into the hobby and then I found out it was just killed as soon as I got into it😂. So I admit I was hard on AOS. But it has always caught my eye mostly with the models. I’m still a little iffy on the lore like with the different realms and everything but I think I’m open to try it. Plus since the return of old world I can finally dive into the old world like I always wanted to lol.
