Midnight Radio is one of the songs that I just... understand. Oh how much I adore this show, and I WISH I could’ve seen it live. Hedwig is one of my most favorite characters in musical theatre, and I hope to play them one day. Lena Hall is so unbelievably amazing, and I can’t believe I haven’t seen this video prior to today. I adore her💕✨
THIS IS THE ONE I WAS WAITING FOR!!!! This song IS your song! Every time I hear you sing it, whether it's while I'm in my car driving, or while you were doing hedwig, this one would give me goosebumps. I literally cannot stop myself from singing along poorly, or just lip singing. You are so fucking magical, Lena! ROCK ON!!!!
This song and Lena's cover of it uplifts me when I'm down. It's absolutely beautiful, emotional, and inspiring, and that shows in the upvotes, comments, and crowd reactions from live performances you can find elsewhere on youtube. The fact you chose to respond to your 1 critic here out of all the praise you got shows me how much you care about your work. Your feelings and passion shine through in your songs Lena, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!
Lena Hall has played both Yitzack and Hedwig throughout her time in the 2014 Broadway revival and subsequent tour. Oh, and she won a Tony award for her performance as Yitzack.

I honestly mean no offense but it's clear you have no attachment or emotion in your singing of Hedwig songs. You are technically talented. You can reproduce notes. You have a powerful voice, good timbre and coloring. I would advise taking some drugs, stop worrying so much about hitting perfect notes and for god's sake, learn the words. Yoko, no Joko. Do you even know what you're saying or is it just notes? Maybe try listening to Geraldine Fibbers/Carla Bozulich, Patti Smith, and of course John Cameron Mitchell's singing, etc. It's funny that when Hedwig is trimming Tommy Gnosis' eyebrows, a lady is singing "I will always love you". A song sung with feeling and love and beauty by Dolly Parton or sung with lots of trill and power and no soul by Whitney Houston.
your words don't make a lot of sense. she's covering a song, not playing the role on the stage. she doesn't have to, like, act her heart out. good-sounding notes matter more now. and she won a tony award for her performance in this show, John Cameron Mitchell did cast her as Hedwig, so i assume she knows more about the role than you do. and again, she's recording an album. listen to John Cameron Mitchell in the original cast recording of "Hedwig", he puts less emotion in his singing than he does on stage. he's an incredible actor but it doesn't give anyone the right to compare him to other actors in this role. they all are great. (she didn't say Joko, she said Yoko. she just pronounces the "y" in the weird way.)
with all due respect, the raw emotion is what I've always liked most about Lena's Hedwig and specifically her midnight radio. her emotion in my opinion really comes through, maybe watch a bootleg of her acting in the full show, I'm absolutely obsessed
@@astrid3522 Thank you for a thoughtful and useful response. So many have responded talking about awards/accolades like they matter at all. They don't seem to understand the award process. Jethro Tull won a Grammy for best new heavy metal album against bands like metallica and Jethro Tull isn't metal. Some people win because they pay to win. Worst kept secret in awards shows. But i digress. Your response is personal and I'll actually check out her live show performance. Maybe the immersion changes things. This recording sounds technical but hollow to me
@@seanaguilar2057 I wish I had enough money to buy an award! hahahahahahah I believe this was day 8 of filming. I had been singing all day every day filming and recording this series of 54 songs because we only had 8 days to do it. I had 4 chances at every song in the series. SO what you are seeing is me giving all the gas left in the tank. I don't think it's un-emotional but I was singing my brains out for 8 days straight and this was the last song. I think the problem might be that the video is spliced together from all 4 takes so it doesn't always match up with the one vocal take we did use. Thank you for listening and thank you for your comment. Please, don't be-little an award that took me an extreme amount of work to even get a nomination for. You have no idea what we (people who aren't already famous, don't have famous parents, and don't have money) have to do to even get put on a ballot much less win. BTW: JCM is the Hedwig of all Hedwigs! I'll stand by that.
@@LenaHall Thank you for your reply. I'm almost sorry you saw it. I didn't mean to belittle your award. I've honestly probably never worked as hard at anything as you did for that award but even you know well that awards are given to those less than worthy sometimes. Accolades mean nothing to me. Some of the greatest artists received little to none in their lifetime. That being said, you deserve it, just not for this specific performance. lol. Not that it's bad. It's technically great. Maybe no one can feel so strongly for 8 days of straight recording. I took Astrid's advice and watched some of your performances from the actual show. You are damn good. I like the raw and emotional takes from the show. I will say, I've now watched about 40 of your videos/videos of you. I assume this was the trap the whole time. haha. But seriously, I think it's just this take/session I'm not super fond of. But this one? Damn. th-cam.com/video/1C7UhbYgZd8/w-d-xo.html To be fair, there are some, (live and recorded) performances by JCM himself that aren't my favourite. Anywho, I hope I didn't offend you though I was pretty rough. Obviously some love this version. I don't. But if you come to Houston, I'll pay to see you with no reservations, (hesitation i mean not that I refuse to plan ahead). I'd actually like to hear you cover a Geraldine Fibbers song and Carla Bozulich (and the Fibbers themselves) is sacred to me. Have a great night. Keep up the good work.
The fact that you're talking about gender and how this song should or should not be sung shows to me you completely missed the meaning of the story.... sorry

Listened to this a solid 10 times in a row. The effortlessness (or at least the skill it takes to make it look that way), is mind blowing
I've only listened to it once so far, but probably gunna listen to it again and again too.. I love her voice and passion! she rocks... (pun intended)

Damn.... Wow!!! I like the original version with JCM better, but boy can Lena Hall sing.

does not quite have the emotion of the original, but still best cover ive ever seen
Good. BUT missed the deep angst of the original

Love lena but JCM is way better.
Great tribute tho
I se you're doing the "one eye" bullshit.

Great range, but this song should not be feminized... anyone who understands the story should know that. Also, very screetchy... sorry
The fact that you're talking about gender and how this song should or should not be sung shows to me you completely missed the meaning of the story.... sorry
Literally _anyone_ is allowed to sing these songs: male, female, nonbinary, and anyone in between. That's kind of the whole point of Hedwig...
