Making an Anorak (Traditional Parka)

- This video shows you how I made an anorak. An anorak (or annoraaq) is a waterproof, windproof garment worn over warm underclothing. It is a loose fitting garment that helps keep you warm by trapping warm air underneath it against your body and blocking wind and rain from soaking through to your other clothing layers. This arctic anorak has a generous size, hood, and a closeable gusset at the neck and sleeves. It has diagonal slash pockets with a second flap to allow access to garments worn beneath the anorak. It is 100% cotton with leather loops/drawstring and wooden buttons.
My pattern comes from the book Snow Walker's Companion by Garrett and Alexandra Conover. I show you how I create the pattern from the small sketches in the book, cut the pattern and make the anorak.
It turned out really well and is a very functional outdoors garment important to all who like to explore the wilderness.

Almost impossible to find good clothing like this for a reasonable price. Seems one have to make them one self. This looks really good. A tube for the face built in to the hood is also great.

That is so beautiful. Being from Minnesota, I would wear that every day in winter. They cost $390 U.S. from Duluth Pack. I trust their quality but it is unaffordable for the average person.
They are very pricey. Making one I know why now. It was a bit over $200 CDN in materials. The labour would make it up to $400 CDN if I was to sell one in canada.
Good job! People complain about price on a lot of stuff like this, but good materials aren't cheap, and it takes time and skill to make the garment. I also recommend that book for any outdoors person to have in the library - even if you think you know everything, you just might not. Also, it's good to 'preserve knowledge' for others who may need it in the near future.

So happy to have found your channel. My 9 year old daughter and I are both making tradition anoraks this month. We are 100% food self sufficient now we need to work on clothing self sufficiency.
For now we will use Military Surplus wool Blankets but in the spring we will have our own sheep and be able to shear for wool.
Add that to National hide we are set.
Cant wait to learn more from you.

I watched this video a year ago. I had made a hand sewn wool blanket anorak. Turned out ugly but I love it. Since then, I bought a machine or two. Have made a few and would love to send photos of my renderings. Not as polished as yours but they do well.
We learn from our mistakes. So don’t be afraid of making mistakes. And remember if you’re not making mistakes you’re not learning anything.

Good video, really helped figure out the welt pockets. Unfortunately the book says to cut the lines first if I'm not mistaken. This made me have some corner bunching problems. Had to iron it a lot to make it look decent

Beautiful work. That thing looks awesome, and best of all its very functional. Next time though you can leave out all the metric conventions, you know us southern folk are easily confused.
Thanks Stu! I had to convert the entire pattern from imperial measurements before I traced it out. I messed up a couple times (multiplying inches by 2.2 instead of 2.5 to get cm) and had to fix some stuff. Being a border city kid between the US and Canada I can go between metric and imperial somewhat easily but I still mess up sometimes.

Can you tell me what ounce canvas you use and where you purchased it from? It seems like a very sleek material. I'm using 7 oz. duck canvas but it has a rougher feel.

At 2.54cm/inch I guess you had to do some rounding up or down. So, up or down?
Does the book say how cold this coat can go?
Two years down the road, but this is a timeless video. Thanks for all the detail. I just received The Snow Walker's Companion the other day and was kind of mystified by that pattern. My issue is that I am much larger than a men's medium and need to scale up to an XL (115 KG and 195 CM tall). Alexandra does not know how to do it. Any ideas? Also, what kind of fabric did you use? I think that this pattern is made for a lighter weight cotton cloth since it uses double layers. They mention a 4.5 ounce Egyptian cotton as a great fabric for tents and anoraks and they bought 100 yards to "last them a lifetime". I bought 13 yards of 10 ounce cotton canvas duck cloth to make mine and I think it would be too heavy if I doubled it with a liner layer. I also ordered the Anorak kit from Lure of the North which will come with precut pieces for an XL anorak, but from their detailed instructions their take on the anorak is different from the one you made even though they say it's based off the Conover model. They do not have the cool double pocket but I may incorporate that into their anorak.
I used the heaviest cotton I could find at Fabricland. I couldn't find Egyptian cotton. It is still quite a heavy anorak. I had to adjust my pattern to make it smaller for me. I just went by experience. You could add a few inches all around in dimension and do a test fit and pin before sewing.

@faultroy I highly recommend their kit. It was pre-shrunk, accurately cut and if you followed the directions in their PDF not terribly hard to assemble. It did take quite a few hours to do, but I feel I learned a lot by taking that time. I did add the welt pockets like the Yam does in this video and think it's a good addition to be able to reach through to your underlayers. The things I would do differently is attach the ruff with Velcro versus sewing it on. That makes it much easier to clean the anorak. I would also put some small pockets inside the big kangaroo pocket for keys, wallet, small knife, and sew some lanyards under the arms to clip mittens to. It was generously sized, but with my thick Lester River Bushcraft wool anorak underneath it's about perfect. I also made some winter mocassins from their instructions, but did not buy the kit since I had plenty of material. They turned out nice, too.No clue on the yardage required. I did trace all the pattern pieces in case I wanted to make another.
Sewing machine: My daughter has a $600 ish Janome. It's the bomb. So easy to use. You don't need a walking foot for this project.

I have sewn for 20 yrs. It took me two weeks of a couple hours a night working on it I think.
Hope you pre soaked the bias tape. Wouldn't want it to bleed on the beige when washed .

Thank you! All the details are found within the book. I did some minor adjustments to the pattern to make it fit me better. I highly recommend the book for the detailed info on how to make this anorak. Also, there are plans for canvas tents, moccasins, gaiters, etc! Also, lots of good stuff in there about Winter camping.

Since the materials used are dependent on the pattern size, I recommend you order the book to get all the info on how to make it: www.canadianoutdoorequipment.com/snow-walkers-companion.html I used heavy cotton for the shell and sash, medium weight interfacing, leather cord for the drawstring, several types of wooden buttons (of my own choosing), ribbon, double fold extrawide bias tape and hem tape . I did some modifications from the pattern so my exact amount of materials may not make sense if you were to make it.
