We grow loads of tomatoes. Living in the burbs, it's difficult to have a garden large enough to sustain our family (plus horrific back issues). Several years ago, we started supporting an organic farm as a shareholder. They reached out to see if our home's porch could be a pickup location for shareholders. We agreed and now get to keep all unclaimed shares for ourselves or to share with others. It is a HUGE blessing to our family. Sometimes there are so many unclaimed shares that i struggle to get it all put up. We are so thankful for farmers. Love your channel.

I dehydrate peppers, run them through a blender, and have pepper spice. Fantastic on beef, whether it's roasts or burgers. I use it on all meat. I keep it in a jar in the freezer, doesn't clump up.

Grew up on subsistence type farm and we grew/raised almost everything we ate. Lots of green beans with each quart canned with a cloce of garlic.
Sometimes when there were only enough green beans for one or less canners full was when mom would mix it up using other veggies. One of my favorites was mixed with tomatoes. Some of them would just have about 2/3 beans with 1/3 of smaller péeled tomatoes. Loved that as a side dish in winter.
My top 5 have alot to do with storage longevity even if you arent able to can or freeze.
    1. Potatoes
    2. Winter squash
    3. Kale
    4. Cabbage
    5. Onions

Our family love carrots...I also can about 50+ quarts of my soup mix which is 1/2 carrots, 1/4 celery, and 1/4 onions.. it is a wonderful soup base for many soups. Something I can EVERY year!! Just a tip..if using a food processor to do your onions, put them in the bottom of your quart jar, as if you put them on top..the water has a difficult time going through them...

My top 5 are Tomatoes (salsas, soups, pasta sauces, pizza sauce, bruschetta, ketchup, BBQ sauce, enchilada sauce, Chili base, stewed, whole, diced, salsa verde, green tomato curry starter, green enchilada sauce) Sweet/hot peppers (pickled several different ways, hot sauce, diced or sliced and frozen for cooking, harissa, ingredient and other things like salsa and sauces etc) garlic & onions ( used in just about everything) lettuces for fresh eating, and number 5 is beans (green as well as shelling). I'd add my apples/plums/figs/berries too But I don't have to plant them every year.

I love your attitudes, smiles and laughs! I'm growing regular and sweet potatoes for the first time this year. Storage will be a learning process for these this year. I typically grow lots of tomatoes, peppers, herbs, cucumbers and berries. I either can or dehydrate most things to preserve. I plant fruit trees wherever we live but rarely get to harvest from them before we move. At 69 I think we may be in our last home? maybe 😄 I have 4 apple, 2 plum, grapes, black berries, raspberries, Honeyberries and eldeberries as permanent crops.

I dehydrate the carrot tops and use them like parsley in rice, soups, pasta, and stews. I also pick the sweet potato leaves from the vines when I harvest the potatoes, blanch them and freeze to use like I would spinach. Broccoli stems are good shredded and either used like slaw or sautéed with other veggies.

Something I wanted to toss in here real quick.... Those carrot tops are edible. I toss them in when I cook greens or make salads. If you have chickens they will love those carrot tops too.
This is my first year with a real garden at the new house, so I put down little bit of everything just to see what is going to work. Our soil is really heavy, mostly clay so I spend off seasons adding compost and trying to get it amended into something useful. I currently have tomatoes zucchini, lettuce, spinach, collards, mustard, 3 kinds of tomatoes, onions, shallots, radishes, carrots, honey dew melons, and peppers. I just have a tiny bit of everything. I want to find out what my pests are going to be before I commit to anything. I found out we have a small army of squash beetles from my efforts last year.

As for carrots, I would add, they need very 'light or fluffy' soil to be successful growing them. I added a mix of peat or coco coir and perlite to my soil to fluff it. My top 5 is pretty similar, but I do freeze my bell peppers and dehydrate the hot peppers for making powders (chili and paprika). Of course, I am using them in cooking during the off season. We get plenty of fresh eating, since I have a pretty long growing season. My other must grow is blackeyed peas instead of green beans. I shell and freeze them. I do not like them canned or dried and reconstituted or from the store. Also, the leaves of carrots and sweet potatoes are edible, so could add a few of the leaves to your salad for variety.

We havnt found a spot potatoes will grow. The groundhog digs through them. I found best solution is hardware cloth under your raised bed. I am going to try that next year. I'm trying black beans this year instead of green beans. My favorite thing to grow is onions! 3 years of growing and they are my most satisfying. I chopped them and made dry chopped and powder and it was the most flavorful I've ever had. 6B and my favorite things to grow are onions, herbs, beans, tomatoes and summer squash. Those are just in my 3 years of gardening, not my top preps. As we double garden space each year I pick more and more. I have a love hate relationship with cucumbers, we get too many and they never stop, I have to pull a healthy plant still producing near end of the year cuz we just can't eat any more

    Every garden in Newfoundland has:
    Potatoes. Easiest to grow
Carrots. In the past, normal weather at planting time was weeks of drizzle. So germination was good.
Rutabaga. Minimize the need for thinning by sowing seeds 4" apart and they usually do well.
Beets. Just a culture thing. But they are easy to grow.
    Rhubarb. Stupidly easy to grow!
If I had to choose just five:
I would replace beets with baking beans. A source of protein that is easy to store and can be prepared in several different ways.
And winter squash instead of Rhubarb. Takes a lot of space and water to grow but sits on the shelf for many months. It can be canned if you get it right. Or frozen. There's so many varieties that can make dishes of many tastes and textures.

Maybe my garden will get them when the garden gets larger, we'll see. I live in Georgia, just west of Atlanta. I just pulled my lettuce up and planted cabbage,a couple of days ago, it really gets bitter now and starts to bolt, radishes will all come out tomorrow same problem, but have plenty of things to put in their place! Also dug garlic this week, all the tops had died, they did just OK and they were hard neck I may try soft neck next year. Thanks for all your info enjoyed the five herbs also, I'm trying ginger for the second time and I will try the tumeric. I did grow some big carrots this time that I am enjoying but it take me 3 times to get it right lol Love ya'll, Carol

Oh my gosh! We use our brightly colored bell peppers to make pepper relish, and it is delicious and beautiful! We eat it on hot dogs, sandwiches, and BBQ. I make some sugar free for my keto lifestyle. Everyone raves about it. It lasts two or three years when water bath canned. We also love stuffed peppers and stuffed pepper soup, which I am going to freeze dry when our bell peppers start producing. I freeze dry that bag of frozen peppers and onions from Walmart, and they are fantastic!! Don't rehydrate them, just snack on them as crunchy pepper chips. People are shocked when they bite down on one of those crunchy freeze dried red peppers. They usually like them better than any of the other veggies. Ya'll just aren't fixing them right, LOL!! BTW, they have more vitamin C than oranges. I would put them above carrots, as peppers are FAR more versatile, when you talk about many many ways to fix them. I freeze dry and powder them to add to spaghetti sauce, chili, or omelets. Our favorite quick meal is stuffed jalapeno poppers, with cheddar and bacon!! They freeze well, and sometimes I add Mexican chicken. We are pepper people, I guess. :)

I enjoy growing garlic. Plant it in October, cover it with a layer of straw and let it go!! Love getting the scapes-so so good! Then I cover garlic cloves with local raw honey and that helps boost immunity as well as helps shorten the time of a cold or flu-and it keeps away the vampires!!!!
I wish our growing season was long enough for sweet taters, but it isn’t. Can’t plant in ground till June 1st and first frost is by med September if not before…

Here's a great idea that I got from a catering company in California.
Youu take some good seeded crackers, I like the long rectangular ones, or any organic style ..you rub some hummus on the cracker and like to put the feta cheese on top of itcause it sticks to the hummus However the feta is prettier on top afterward as a garnish..then you add some roasted red bell peppers, the Kind you buy In a jar..and Greek Calumetta Ollive',..s chopped up if you like and you got yourself an hordeurve
. Just an idea to eat roasted red, green or yellow pepper's as.

I flash freeze chopped peppers on a tray. Then, I slide them into a freezer bag. They never get freezer burn. They taste great in anything I cook.

My top 5 would be spinach, potatoes, broccoli carrots and tomatoes. My family doesn't eat green beans as much as the spinach and broccoli. We are zone 6 and I winter over the spinach and small carrots with just plastic row cover.

I plant bush beans in the same spot my garlic came from. It feeds nitrogen to the garlic the next year and it keeps bugs away from the beans. Have done this 3 years in a row in the same spot. No bug issues at all and strong healthy garlic. Hope this helps.

I grow green beans, tomatoes, onions, eggplant and carrots for my top five, but I love my herbs and lettuce. I just harvested my first ever broccoli- I have tried to grow may times, but this spring has been better than usual in Georgia for brassicas. Great video-thank you for sharing.

@@danaramey6519 Try a row cover. Put it on as soon as you transplant. Keeps the moths off that lay the worm eggs. Works great on cabbages.

Peppers, sliced and frozen. Super nutritious,
Butternut squash.... super nutritious and stored in the basement or cubed and frozen.
Asparagus, while not a good long-term keeper, is perennial and the first veggie we eat out of the garden in mid May here in Upstate NY.
Haven't planted beans in years..... not a fan. LOL!
