I repair Dysons all the time. You made it a bit harder for yourself. At 7.16 in the video you are referring to attaching the spring on the plastic lug. The plastic lug is part of a bracket held on by two small T8 screws, those two screws by your finger at 7.28 in the video. Undo them when you are removing everything and the whole thing comes away then you can leave the spring attached to the lug/bracket then when you put it back together place the bracket/lug back in place and put the two screws back in, therefore you don’t need to remove the spring from the lug at all and makes it so much easier
this video explained what was wrong with our dc 40 i saw you move the tube between pipes and when i looked at ours it would only suck via the hose not the brushes. The reason my wife had accidently sucked up a pen it had gone through the soft hose and jammed it from moving. With some delicate pliers i was able to remove the offending item. we do have a very small split in thevpipe but at this time all is working well. You video has saved me the £79 plus parts call out charge from dyson. Thank you very much for taking the time to do this . Graham
thanks for uploading this - same thing just happened to my DC40 - local repair shop turned their nose up at me when i brought it in to get replacement part. "Better off with a brush" was their response. Now i have an idea of what task lie ahead of me im happy to give it a shot. Thanks for taking the time to share!
Thanks for this video. Dyson wouldn't sell the part, said it was a job for a vaccum repair person. I found the part online and replaced it myself. And yes, getting the spring back in place was the toughest part, needle nose pliers and a little screwdriver.
Hi Alice.... thank you so much for the info. Just changed my change over hose in around 20 minutes. Works like new. Thanks again. Also taking Ned Kelly's comments into account. No need to remove any springs. I love repairing things especially if it saves me loads of £££££.
Thanks so much for posting this. It pisses me off no end that neither Dyson nor an official Dyson service place could diagnose this problem on my DC40, and there's no Dyson guide to replacing it. I'm sure I could get it off myself but reassembling it without this video would have been so frustrating!
Had the exact same problem. I followed your guidance step by step. Only difference I removed 2 screws that held the spring you took loose and the plastic over the duct came loose with springs still attached. Then put in place and put 2 screws beside each other back in place. (did not have to use a lot of swearing putting the spring back on. Many thanks for this. I could not have done it without your help. (also, order the cov hose not the internal hose (that is a different one and much easier to put on. Thanks again
A very great assist in figuring out how to replace the valve, and the comment about not needing to remove the springs was entirely helpful. I found that the non filter side came off by using a needle nose in the little holes and turning the small center cover to reveal the inner screw that is also removed by using the needle nose to unscrew. In the US I could not find the part on Amazon, but did find it on Ebay. Thank you for sharing!!
Many thanks Alice for this video, really helpful. I used Ned & Jim's tip (in the comments) to make the job even easier. Like another commenter, I only removed the wheel on the filter side, didn't find any need to remove the other one. Also in case anyone else is wondering, it's fine to use a socket set with Torx bits to do this job - none of the screws are located in hard-to-access places.
Thanks Alice for showing me how this can be done. And thanks to the comments section for explaining how the spring section can be unscrewed too. Saved me a hefty repair bill.
You are a certified Dyson Surgeon. Great video. Now I see how to remove the hose and to think I was just about ready to throw it through my living room window. The newer models are a little different, I am guessing yours and mine may be about 7 years old? THANK YOU for this video, looked at several and yours is the only one I found for this particular repair. Very Grateful.
I have just replaced mine myself didn’t need to remove the springs though like you did. I also had a problem because the machine wouldn’t sit upright by itself after. But just needed a bit of persuasion (i had that issue beforehand). So he 9yo dyson lives on and saved on not needing to replace it
Very helpful, thank you! I was also able to do this without disconnecting the spring and without taking off the cover on the non-filter side. I'd recommend to anyone about to start this project to have T-8 and T-10 screwdrivers.
You are a damn hero! I just followed your tutorial and replaced my cov hose on my dc40 and you're right those little buggers are hard to get back in and it took a lot of cursing and four or ten tries. Keep being awesome!! Cheers
Thank you for this video which gave me the confidence to have a go at fixing our Dyson. Had to do it twice as I put the hose in wrong (I think ) the first time! But working great now. So helpful!!
Wow! Just did it!!! Perfect! Wonder how much I saved by fixing this myself? Great video and good instructions....ps...this is Celeste, Curt's wife. commenting....
Thanks sooo much for this..... I can strip mine down blindfold but I couldn’t work out why it wasn’t sucking in the “recline” mode. My COV is really perished, am ordering long with a T10 and 8 thank you xx
Thanks. Changed mine although it didn't have holes. Still the same though. Works fine but all of a sudden it makes a noise and the suction goes very low. Sounds like it's in the ball area.
Speaking of the changeover hose, where do I get that change over Rubber grommet seal for the end? Or at least tell me what it's called so I can find it in buy it!!!
Great video. Only thing. Wish you would if shown which screws went were. Putting back together for my mother in law after the brother in law took it apart. Very fun.
Thank you! Sadly, we are now having a hard time remembering how to put it back together. Do you have a good photo of where the screws go? IT will go back together but isn't switching between positions properly, and we realize that we didn't screw it back right
I didn't screw that bit back right either and have the same issue as you describe so wish I'd taken a video of that too!!! If you find a video of that elsewhere please let me know! 😃
@@alicehburrell OMG, I got it by looking at yours. I'll suggest my kid take a video of how it goes apart and back together. Dyson sucks with regards to sharing how to fix stuff. It works now. Much gratitude. (And I shared you on our page for Girls in STEM, as you are the kind of woman we are trying to raise.)
Just finished this repair. This video would have been more helpful if you could have had someone film while you did the repair. There's a number of steps to remember and follow so I just stopped watching and dove in and figured all out! Don't get me wrong, what you posted was somewhat helpful and I gave it a thumbs up. Also when putting in the new hose, the new hose seal can get caught on the plastic housing where its suppose to sit and seal itself. It was an interesting mechanical repair indeed! Certainly not for the faint of mechanical heart and why Dyson told me to take into service center for repair. NOT! LOL!
Thanks for the up vote :-) Also thanks for adding the extra tips, hope they'll be useful to someone. Glad it was a bit helpful - I usually find watching these sorts of things on my phone and using "pause" a lot helps. Since the only other people in my house are aged 4 and 6, I still reckon you got the best cameraman available for the job ;-)
I've been to Lowe's and Home depot and can not find a T8, very small and hard to find. My Screws don't look like yours, they just look like a hinge pin instead and are only shown on one side, the opposite side is just hard plastic. I can't figure this out.
Hi Alice, we have the DC50, although there are a few minor differences, the video was very helpful. As Dyson was out of the COV hose assembly part for a couple of months and they do not back order, we ordered the part from ezvacuum.com (p/n: 965093-01 - $20 Free Shipping), but when the part came it was original dyson p/n 922625-03 on the inner packaging. In any event, the hardest part is getting the 2nd spring re-attached. I found it easier to disconnect the outer round part of the spring, just widen with a small screwdriver a bit and pull off carefully with a needle nose, Then with a pair of needle nose plyers hold the spring and pull the inner looped end of the spring over the connecting piece within the vacuum as you are looking down into it (a head lamp was helpful), then re-attach the out part of the spring and squeeze slightly to tighten around plastic part of mold. The part holding the spring at 3:44 is a little more difficult to get out on the DC50, but with a little extra pressure eventually pulled out. Also the holding part at 4:58 does not exist on the DC50. At the end of the day your video was helpful in expediting the change. Took a little less than 30 minutes. Thanks again!
Where did you get that part? I live in remote Canada and my hands are tied in repairing that part. Dyson wont sell me the part and wants me to send it away to be repaired. The cost alone would buy me another Dyson.
Hi there! I hope you didn't mean your message to come across as rude and shouty as it looks, as I'm sure you realise people posting low volumes of DIY videos are doing so altruistically and do not make anything from it beyond a small feeling of happiness if they help someone out. I'm sure a Google of "Dyson DC40 COV hose" will turn up a few sites offering the part for sale locally to where you live. Good luck with your fix!
Potrait mode to film a video? It makes your video a tiny eith massive black bars on the sides, your video is 1/3 of the pic. Please hold your camera like a wide screen TV, then start your camera . Its hard to see the details without sensing it to my television. No offence but you're the fifth person .
Get over yourself. It is not art, it is a person going out of their way to help others. You can hear the kids in the background, so right there you have plenty of reason cut slack. And to be catty about it, what the heck does your last sentence even mean?

Can you get a vid up?
Just did it myself tbh pretty simple
thank you for this suggestion and the video, managed to replace mine too.

Anyone know this part number for this hose? I can't even find the part on the website.
I just googled Dyson COV hose and bought from eBay I think. Someone in the comments posted the part number as 922625-01. Good luck!
Really useful, but read some of the comments for some extra tips before starting.
Legend! My change over pipe had a metal rod jammed in the bend preventing it closing! Thanks

A COV or change over valve
