  • Brooks and I had an unexpected surprise show up on the new ranch this day. My neighbor had mentioned something to me about possibly having some cows show up on our property. Well, sure enough, they appeared out of nowhere while Brooks and I were putting up a deer feeder. Now, we have to round these trespassers up and see who's they were!

    Was just wondering how they got in. Obviously you'll need to make sure front gate's closed.
    If you have drone, might want to ck for any others that might be wandering about.

    I’ve always been around cows. Yep! Let’s face it, they aren’t the brightest light bulb out there but they are great animal to watch and feed. They’re like puppies and will follow you almost anywhere and they pretty much do what you want them to. I love having them here. Like your bison they each have their own personality.

    • @Gloria-ro4vn

      @@alan30189 Cows can be just as dangerous as Bison, maybe more so, because you tend to let your guard down around cows. There are several videos out there that will show you just how dangerous they can be; one showing some cows running off a Grizzly Bear. My Aunt and Uncle had a couple of sweet looking Jersey milking cows, that as soon as you turned your back, they'd try to stomp you to death. LOL

    Cattle will find the weakest part of the fence and go thru it. You're going to have to walk your fence and either repair or replace it. Growing up around them I hated walking the fence. Keep a roll of wire, post, cutter and stretcher in your truck.

    We had Holsteins and when thy ere far out in the pasture, we would call “Come Boss, Come Boss! And they would come to the barn. Always the same two leaders in the front. When they would get out of where they were supposed to be, they could be the most stubborn to get back where they belonged. It would take several people to corral them in. I’ve never seen cows following the sound of a feed sack like those on this video. Glad it worked . It could be hard for one person to get three cows to go where you wanted them to. You couldn’t leave Brooks and run after cows.

    It's so funny when you hear Moo-ing in your farmyard and you know that none of your animals will sound like that. But they are welcome as long as they don't use your side mirrors as cow scratchers! ;D You have the opportunity to get some nice fresh coffee milk. One time I had several beef cows in the workhorses forest summer-pasture. How they came in and not the horses out is still a mystery, but only thing I can think of now is somebody let them in! They came from a farm a couple of miles away and had been lost for several days. All was so happy to be there! :D

      Talking from personal experience with beef cattle, it's super frustrating when they get out. Our main herd is easy enough to deal with; they know who I am and follow me back into the pen (heck, they will walk right up to my car when they see me pull up). The feeders on the other hand... they know who I am, but they just don't care 😂

    • @rebeccaburrow7199
      @rebeccaburrow7199 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Larger ranches often leave their cattle for long periods of time since they tend to be so self sufficient, so if you have a few rude ones they can go run amuck for awhile before the owners know. Cows actually can jump if they care. Usually you just want to eat those ones 😂👍

    • @Weeks25

      I’m a city slicker so I was thinking the same thing. An also thinking that would irritate the hell out of me. It’s one thing having an animal get out an on your property but it’s a whole different story when you can’t get them to go away! It might not annoy me unless it keeps happening. At that point the rancher has to keep them in a fenced in pasture. I’m sure Dusty doesn’t want them eating all his deer feed.

      sometimes they get out, there are chronic wanderers also. The chronic ones always went to the sale barn/slaughter sales. Years ago we had a crazy limousine steer jump a 5 foot gate and kept going. Tried to find it later that day (working cattle that just arrived from the sales barn - vaccinations, ear tags, branding, etc. to background on pasture till fall when they would be shipped to the family owned feedlots). Got a call later that fall and the steer was found in another person's herd 150 miles from the home place where he jumped the gate. Ex boss went to get him and could not even make it all the way home with him, dropped him off at the butcher they used in the past to get processed as he was destroying the trailer. His dress weight (hanging weight) was nearly 1200 lbs. Man that steer had some of the best steaks I can remember, we nicknamed him bruno LOL.

    That would be incredibly annoying. Had it been one of your bison, say Big Joe, who got out and on someone elses property, I am sure people would be up in arms. I am actually terrified of cows. Not Bison. Cows. I was chased by a herd of them one morning and if I didn't decide to risk getting cut and go through the barbed wire fence, I am not quite so sure I would be here. I went to get eggs from the chicken coop. They were brand new on the farm. I walked in and wasn't expecting them so soon. I was told, they're fine. I get about 20 feet in and they charged me. Nope. I tried again a few days later. Same deal. Now, whenever I eat a steak or beef, I remember those mornings and smile. Pay back. :P
