3 years later and i still listen to this musical... but for some reason haven't remembered this song?? So thanks for bringing me back to listen to it, cause i still love it! Any of the in trousers songs that draw parallels between the women are great, and i think this one highlights the wife's arc really well. 'I'm breaking down' feels like bitter acceptance, and 'breakfast over sugar' is the 'bargaining' stage of grief, but 'I feel him slipping away' has this underlying panic. And again, i love parallels between the women, and the way the highschool sweetheart calls her pathetic, like shes an actual gossiping highschooler hits just right.
This is from the production I directed as my thesis for my Bachelor's in Directing at NYU. I had several conversations with Bill Finn and he gave me permission to experiment with the order of the material and combining material from different versions. I hope someday Encores or someone gives this material a closer look. It is pretty marvelous (although messy)
