I owe Tech a lot. When I started rapping, I was chopping without even knowing what it was. Someone said I sound like Tech N9ne; I said who’s that. He showed me the strange music website in 06 and I been rockin with the snake and bat ever since
Tech was in one of 2 places. In the studio or on the road. Sometimes both. Tech worked efficiently, invested in his craft, and believed in himself. Been down since Anghellic.

Travis was the key factor. Because Alone, that ish don't work, you need SIGNIFICANT financial backing To BLOW independent. I would pump out music weekly and yes I had skill and respect but shit hardly took off NO MATTER how good the song. But the second I decided to FINANCE my own projects marketing advertising at the smallest level. that elevated everything .. You can invest someone elses money that's smart. But When you pump your own profits back into your work, even if it's just $100...AH 🙏🏽NOW you get it. The mindset is more important than the amount.
This is kind of coo to see . I’m from Kansas City. And I graduated from the same high school as Tech a few years ago. But Ima keep it Gee. We don’t reeeeally listen Tech N9ne that much here. At least “in the Streets.” We listen to more of the street rappers locally lol most of his fans here are white. We respect dude tho.
Jim Morrison was the Lizard King. The Doors had a song called Crawling King Serpent. The album that has "People are Strange" is actually called Strange Days with a self titled song that may have been just as influential in the label name.
Being born and raised from Kansas City, Tech N9ne has been a big inspiration on me. Since I started writing music, I always said that I wouldn't want to be signed to any label unless it was Strange Music. He showed me that an independent artist from KC can prosper and it would be a dream of mine to meet him or for him to even read my lyrics. Even if they weren't top of the line, I'd still at least be happy that I got to see him. Other rappers got me into Hip Hop, but Tech N9ne is the reason I feel I can actually do it. Thanks, Tech.
As a guy from Minneapolis who actually bought "The Calm Before the Storm" the day after it dropped (all it took was hearing "Now It's On" and "Questions" one time...) and has been to over a dozen of his Shows, I'm insanely surprised that he's JUST starting to get so much more attention now. Maybe it was mainly a MW thing, but I swear every single person around my age was a HUGE Tech fan through school. Huge Strange Music fans through school. For anybody just getting into his music, PLEASE do yourselves a favor and listen to his older projects... Quality of his music (as well as SM as a whole tbh) has kind of been slipping for years now. Go listen to any of the projects he dropped up to All 6's and 7's, and I'd be surprised if you don't like most of it. I still listen to Tech on a daily basis, but I haven't really been a fan of the direction he's taken with SM nor have I liked the newer Collabo projects as much as the older ones (MLK is dope as fuck). He's also the best live performer I've seen in almost 20 years of shows. The production is always insane, and fuck he can SPIT. It's been a few years for me, but the only time Tech used a vocal backtrack was for hooks on certain tracks. Unlike so many other "performers" nowadays. If they still do the VIP packages for shows, I HIGHLY recommend it for anybody into his music. He was always insanely nice, and actually remembered me the 2nd time I went VIP and got to meet the OG SM Team. Guy is as genuine as they come in this industry.
I’ll respectfully disagree as a fan that came in around 2010 his new stuff blows everything before everready out of the water imo. I think older fans simply didn’t grow along with tech and are just nostalgic. But like tech said if you like his old shit buy his old shit. It’s still love for a great artist at the end of the day.
@@diveinnature2990 My post was literally almost all love for one of my favorite Artists of all time. I think you may have misunderstood a few things I said after reading your reply. "I think older fans simply didn't grow along with tech and are just nostalgic" That's a pretty broad/generalized statement 🤔... And as far as I go, very untrue. I've been a ride or die fan since the get, and still am. Just because I'd rather not hear Tech spit over some horrid bro-step EDM production (/sign really bad artists to Strange) doesn't mean I'm not a fan of ANY of the music he's put out in recent years. Everybody obviously has their own tastes, and I PERSONALLY think that Tech's best music was ~'02-'09. And it has a lot more to do with the music itself/the direction Strange Music has been going than nostalgia for me. I feel All 6's & 7's was the last really solid Solo LP Tech dropped, if we're talking about a project in full. That was back in what... 2011? He's dropped a LOT of music since '11, and I actually enjoy/listen to a LOT of Tracks he's made in the last decade. I'm not some sour old fan "who wants the old Tech back" (though I do know what you mean, as I'm also a big Em fan and there are quite a few parallels there) As an example, anybody who's listened to TCBTS, Absolute Power, and Everready knows how different each of those LPs sound when compared... And it's not like Everready dropped 10+ years after TCBTS. Hell, take TCBTS out of this and compare Absolute Power and Everready. TOTALLY different sound/direction between the two. So to say that "older fans simply didn't grow along with Tech" really makes no sense, even with that one small example. His entire career has been continuously evolving over time... And just because I may not be a huge fan of the majority of more recent projects doesn't mean I dislike every song he's dropped since what I feel was his peak. Maybe I need to re-visit some projects as a whole from start to finish... I'll admit that, as I have so many Playlists I've made over time that are my go-tos... But you definitely misunderstood what I was saying if you thought I meant the best music he's made were his first few projects.
@@diveinnature2990 In the end, it's not something worth arguing or debating IMO (especially as fans of the same artist). I was quite surprised to see this video in the first place, and wanted to share what I shared. Everybody likes different things. Whether it's music, clothing, hobbies, or something as basic as Android vs iOS. That's why we have the variety of well, pretty much anything and everything... I will say your comment has me planning on going through some of the stuff I haven't listened to front-to-back in a while though. When I have time to chill and listen through quality cans/amp/dac, I'll definitely be doing that 👍
@@idonotexist_ I meant nothing bad by what I said and yes it is general but I feel like many fans who’ve been around since pre 2008-9 are pretty infamous for making general takes regarding everything post KOD. But as you say why argue over a mutually respected artist. I’d recommend definitely going back through things after all 6’s and 7’s cause it’s been a trip from Something Else really being a whole testament to him feeling on top of the world finally starting to get high praise and recognition from people who have been against him from the start it is Techs Victory lap. Then special effects is his world literally crashing down with the death of his mom and fans starting to turn on him cause they feel some kinda way with his more modern style switch ups when in reality tech has become crazy experimental with his music but people are quick to turn their nose over the few tracks that don’t hit the mark. The storm is one of two albums where I can agree that they aren’t so amazing and are tech doing too much stretching himself thin between doing stuff aimed at his old fans but still trying to progress and yet he has a few of his best ever tracks on there namely Need Jesus and What if it was me. Planet tech is trying to pull himself back together and thankfully begins his saga of amazing rnb style tracks with nave monjo and shows improvement but overall the album still a little lackluster. N9na a tech classic full of bangers and tech being unapologetically himself. The whole enterfear saga is techs worst projects after that edm one he did with that guy I can’t remember his name so I feel you on that specific critique. And Asin9ne is also a certifiable classic great album from tech basically a canvas of todays world through his own perspective and him saying his piece on all the recent happenings of strange these last couple of years. So basically I suggest going back to Asin9ne, N9na, Special Effects, and even Something Else cause all four of those are amazing maybe minus a track or two but otherwise are deserving of being up there with KOD, Everready, and Absolute power when we talking Techs best solo albums.
Tech N9ne didn’t rely on any gimmicks. He built up a REAL fanbase which over time got bigger and bigger, which then helped carry him to where he is now. Really talented musician and got nothing but respect for him!

He's real hip hop in a world where that's becoming harder to find! He was and continues to be an inspiration for artists like Xxxtentacion(RIP), JuiceWrld(RIP) and Flatbush Zombies to find a platform without having to talk about the usual drawn out subjects in these so called rap songs nowadays. I'll always love Tech and Strange Music no matter how far I've strayed from it..I'll always be a Technician and will always love and respect Strange Music Inc.
Im not a Tech listener really , BUT I have always known that man’s hustle and fan base is second to none . He does have a VERY specific sound and music type , which honestly is what sets aside those from them now … I mean yes , you got quick flashes in the pan and the typical plants or copies ( I.e. icy narco , that bu/I’m a clone kid , CJ , every mug is flow steal clone from the mid 2000’s to name a few ) but the ones with true longevity are those who create , stay in , and own their own lane and take it all the way , like Wiz . He got on , got Taylor Gang up and out , and had been killing it every which way . Or Currency with Jett Life . That originality, hustle, intelligence, and persistence will do it every time, all that and a strong yesman free circle and you’ll be limitless
Tech learned a lesson that people are still not comprehending. Nobody give you a chance then create your own buzz and give yourself the chance, nobody gonna produce you produce yourself, nobody gonna press your album press it yourself, nobody gonna sign you sign yourself and find a way to do the same for others in the same situation that got the skills to back it all up. The record industry is based on a dying model of using a person or group and discarding them when they are done with them.

Again you are allowed to like them im not here telling you why your wrong for liking them, but you are wrong for say they have more talent then Tech. Shit Tech has more talent then a lot of my favorite rappers it’s just the facts
I've done shows w/ Strange Music artists and their hustle is undeniable, they built a niche and often tour places other major label artists won't go, giving them a huge underground fanbase, and they grow with their fans, not just trying to chase trendy shit. Salute to you for giving them their flowers, every indy artist could learn from Tech N9ne's success.
Glad you telling this story.. it's important and inspiring to hear of those winning under the radar 💯
I feel like Tech N9ne really underrated he not talked about enough fr
You either really like Tech N9ne, or think he's really corny. Most listeners today would think he's corny.
Don't try to distract from the fact that all you had to do was follow the damn train!
Tech n9ne is the complete rapper and it’s nothing he can’t do but that’s pretty much why you don’t know him he HAS what rappers Lie about like for example cashmoney records and BWA or Taylor Gang and whatever other rapper based label/company they go to Him! Behind the scenes tho cause nobody was able to figure out how he do and does what he did it’s a deep dive that people don’t tend to wanna go into in short tho he the best

The thing about Kendrick is he didn't get him when Kendrick was famous. He literally gave Kendrick his props and flowers WAY before kendrick was known. So in a sense he "discovered" kendrick, outside of the LA music scene.
Tech N9ne is a hip hoppers hip hop artist, meaning, he is old school about the love of the music. Which is why he is so successful also.
I saw Kendrick as Jay Rock's hype man on one of tech's tours. If it wasn't for Tech and Strange Jay Rock wouldn't have been able to eventually sign with TDE

Too bad I didn't hear anything on Seven, his amazing inhouse producer that's behind a lot of Tech's hits, albums and the guy who shapes his sound sonically since 2006. He did A TON of production for other current and former Strange Music acts too. A quick couple of notes: It's not New-thows, it's Nuthouse spelled in a different way and Morrison dubbed himself the Lizard King, not the Serpent King.
Very true, he one of the best producers in the underground.
The comment I was hoping to see 😂 Newthows 🤦🏼♂️
Heard Tech N9ne around the same time 50 cent came out and just by the talent and skill I could tell Tech N9ne's career would have much longer longevity. I was told I was crazy lol.
I mean it didn’t “not” work out for 50, he’s doing pretty good paving the lane he did and designing a blue print for other entrepreneurs to follow, his music when he does choose to drop does insane numbers and he also owns his masters. Well done and researched video! I still have a Bay Area double cd that had Tech. Maybe from ‘97ish? He didn’t have his sound he has now. And certainly didn’t have the following he does now. He was really one of the unknowns on the cd set. 🤷♂️ I met him and Travis in 2000 in Salt Lake and was able to give them my cd that had just dropped a few months prior. Travis was a real cool dude at the time too. Interestingly, I have a new album dropping next year that will feature Krizz Kaliko. And Stevie Stone. 😎

Being born and raised from Kansas City, Tech N9ne has been a big inspiration on me.
@@diveinnature2990
My post was literally almost all love for one of my favorite Artists of all time. I think you may have misunderstood a few things I said after reading your reply.
"I think older fans simply didn't grow along with tech and are just nostalgic"
That's a pretty broad/generalized statement 🤔...
I'm not some sour old fan "who wants the old Tech back" (though I do know what you mean, as I'm also a big Em fan and there are quite a few parallels there)
As an example, anybody who's listened to TCBTS, Absolute Power, and Everready knows how different each of those LPs sound when compared...

That originality, hustle, intelligence, and persistence will do it every time, all that and a strong yesman free circle and you’ll be limitless
