    Property taxes in NJ will set you back another 10-20k depending on county and mass of house/property.

    Working in New Jersey isn't the problem. It's living in New Jersey that kills you. Property taxes. Work in Jersey and live in Delaware.

      7% sales tax, 10k property tax
      Net income 50k. 50% tax bracket if you don't smoke or stay in hotels
      And 1k a year for toll roads

    I make 85k in NJ and still live at home because rent is just too high for it to make financial sense to move out. Once I make the money I need to afford a down payment in another state I am gone.

      I live in northern jersey and pay above average property taxes to have a 10 minute commute. If someone from PA had a 1 hour longer commute, their cost of gas/tolls/maintenance/vehicle depreciation already exceeds the savings from property taxes so you are extending your work week 25% for almost nothing.
      Don't get me wrong, certain scenarios like if PA commuting very short makes sense. But don't confuse NJ opportunity for high salary a reason to save money, when you can move closer and save time which is more valuable.

    And this doesn't include things like medical, dental, eyeglasses, union dues, city and county taxes, well you get the picture. New Jersey is a money pit.

      ​@@jerzeeguy9093 lmao "ignorance," I live in NJ, and hate it here. Air quality sucks, drivers are awful, and the Englewood rt 4 bottleneck can kill itself. You're in a VERY small minority that think this is the best state. I'm moving to NY ASAP cuz I can afford it.
      We're like a worse New York, Bergen is where you live if you wanna be near NY but can't afford it, and south jersey is basically republican.
      Side note, only north jersey doesn't like guns, a lot of people in the south of jersey, Paterson, and Newark own em, legally or illegally (illegally most of the time). If you don't like em, I implore you to go to the bad side of Newark or Elizabeth and see if you feel safe without one. I sure as hell don't feel safe without mine.

      Per 100k, it's 14 in Texas and 5 in NJ...NJ is more densely populated so in many cases NJ should have more death rates.
      Also, WV AND VA both have similar gun related mortality rates as Texas with 18 and 13 respectively.

    Then there’s sales tax, property tax.. depending on where you live, parking fees, tolls. High ass car insurance, medical insurance.. and if you rent and want to live in a decent area.. high ass rent.

      it would give people more money to spend which will increase the intake of sales tax. If they lowered rent and housing costs that would be more money. If they taxed people that have mansions more for the environmental impact it would be more money. There are many ways they can make money without the high cost of living.

    Sounds about right, then when you include any retirement or healthcare deductions you’re looking at taking home 70% of your pay. Then when you factor in rent and car payments that’s potentially 30k a year, food, tolls, utilities, childcare etc.. to name a few things people pay for you’ll be lucky if you’re able to sustain.

    If you have the money and a family, there's no state better than NJ. It has some of the best services in the country, and it's the best state for education by far.
    Very expensive though...
