Just purchased my very first Toyota, a 2014 4Runner SR5 2-wheel drive in arctic white, great shape with 124,000 miles on it, but very well cared for. Wishing I had the kind of money you had for the supercharger, but will have to do upgrades a little at a time as I can afford. Also, I note on the one I just bought that the brakes are very soft and go near to the floor and do come to a stop, but my last car a Nissan Murano had reasonably responsive brakes, whereas this Toyota is a very slow grab and makes me a little nervous, have not quite adapted to that yet.

My 1996 4-Runner is the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Bought new in December 96, it now has about 353k mostly trouble free km. Has never burned a drop of oil and since I did the upgrades of a TRD supercharger, Bilstein shocks and bigger sway bars in 2001, it’s been a blast to drive. Living on the west coast, it’s mostly rust free.

I've got a '98 Limited I bought new. It's got a TRD installed, Borla cat-back & a K&N CAI. It's only got 68,000 original miles on it. I've always had multiple vehicles and drove a 1990 Volvo 240dl wagon for 21 years in the winter months, awesome vehicle. Definitely saved the 4 Runner from the winter road treatments, Its always been garaged. Someday I'll probably sell it or trade it in.

Hey PT!!! Got this tip actually off FlyRide youtube channel, but... nothing ever holds to that chrome and it wont scuff properly. But using just standard purple degreaser concentrate, soaking the pieces will disolve all the chrome plating down to bear plastic, so you can then paint it.I havent done it personally but he did perform it on his channel! Hope this helps!

Thanks for this; I'm getting ready to paint the chrome grille on my 92 Toyota Pickup and I was worried about the paint sticking to the fake plastic chrome, even with a scuff. I think I'll try the oven cleaner first. Sure it won't melt the plastic?

I bought a 2016 4Runner Limited brand new. It was perfect for us with two kids and I loved it. I had to trade it in for a 2017 Sienna limited a year later because we had a baby otherwise I would've kept it forever. Even though it had the extra rear seats it was still a hassle getting the three kids in and out of compared to a mini van.

My 99 SR5 4x4 3rd gen has been one of the funnest vehicles I've owned. It does mostly highway, but when I go off road it keeps going nonstop. It is a very rare 5spd. with many off road adventures ahead with over 344,000 miles, has been well maintained and gradually upgraded!

Probably one of the favorite vehicles I owned. I called it my Urban Assault Vehicle because it did everything you described *minus turbo* so well. I miss my 2014 and 2016 but my Tundra fits my needs a little better, less the even worse gas mileage. Always compromises.

Brings me joy to see how well your 4Runner has held up. I bought a 2021 4Runner Limited Nightshade during Covid (Oct 2020), but had no idea how "doggish" the engine was. (no test drives at the time) Needless to say I had HIGH hopes of a supercharger only to discover, I'll have to wait until they come out. I should have done my homework, nevertheless I've really come to enjoy it. Would like to see future models have an electric rear hatch and mirrors, but that's just me being petty. Cheers!!!

Man, I literally did the same thing. My daily driver is a 2000 E55, but I grew concerned I may not be able to get parts for it in the future if needed( note it rarely breaks ). But yeah, the 4Runners performance is disappointing. And it’s gas mileage is horrible. I get 21-25 in the E55 with my foot in it. I’m thinking about ordering a Raptor Bronco and parting with the 4Runner when it arrives. Note, I needed the 4Runner for 4x4 and some towing because I have rural property that the E55 is not ideal for…

    • @toolman67
      @toolman67 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, my 2014 4Runner, since I am new to the model, seems "doggish" as you said, going from a Nissan Murano (handles like a car and has pep) to the 4Runner which definitely sped up and handled like a truck.

I think you guys really hit the nail on the head with this being the "right" size for a 4x4 SUV. I have been a long time land cruiser lover but I just can't get over how fat and heavy they are. I currently own an older 4runner and the GX460 is really attractive to me. I prefer the rear door to the hatch that come on the 4runner. Here in the US 5th gen 4runner and gx460 are pretty similar in price because of the 4runnner/toyota tax.

I agree the LC200 is huge. I still love it though. I think the 80 series is just the right size. A tiny bit bigger than the 4runner (at least from just sitting in one). A split hatch would be one of the only things from making the 4runner perfect

I have had excellent results with SEM Trim Black Aerosol paint. I used it to repaint the black “fins” on my 1996 4Runner grill when I upgraded it to the 2001-02 version. They had been weathered and exposed the chrome beneath. It’s held up great for 2 years!

I bought a 2013 manual tacoma in december and i love it. 4dr, red, bronze trd wheels, trd exhaust, trd short-shifter. The tacoma/4runner/fj are some of the most reliable suv/trucks there is. Rust is an issue on most vehicules up here, these just rust like american trucks instead of what we are used from toyota but nothing regular rustproofing can solve, mine is still mint, im from Qc.

I sold superchargers for a time... The mileage people get with S/C 4Runners is mostly due to intoxication from new found power & not being able to keep their foot out of it... I'm on my 5th 4Runner & 2nd 4.7 V8... Between my V6's & V8's... Gas mileage experience is that the 2 get similar mileage but because of the V8 torque, its usually better than the V6's... Reason? I dont have to put my foot into the V8 to get major thrust & proper gear selection so mileage is better compared to the V6's constantly cycling gears to get in the torque band and prompting impatient throttle stabs on my part...I live in Michigan & am due for a new one because as you say, the salt is a destroyer in the North...If the 2023 doesnt "wow" me... I will go Gen 5 again with a supercharger... Keep the boost & internal perssures down to recomended OEM levels (its not a sports car) & reliability shouldnt be a factor to 250k+++... I have driven a few of my V6 4Runners past 400,000 miles with NO issues & still sold them for a few bucks... People brag about Toyota reliability yet so very few people realize that the payback for owning a 4Runner is that (if its maintenanced well) its just getting going at 200,000 miles... If (hypothetically) a supercharger "half-lifed" the engine (which I dont believe it does) but if... It would still last far longer than most people would ever drive them anyway... If you are going to increase tire size to 34's or 35's... your milage is going in the toilet anyway and a supercharger should actually improve things at that point... The high octain gas $ is a bummer but it will burn cleaner internally with a little less carbon build up & that plays for longevity & reliability... I would love to hear from the individuals that have done the marathon with a S/C and clocked 0ver 300,000 miles... Would love to know what the affects are, if any...

I live just south of DETROIT, so I have similar weather conditions to ours. I use bed liner for all my Blacked out trim pieces and wheel wells ... a real good cleaning... and a small amount of sanding makes the bed liner stick on for many years... I have only had to paint the bed liner 1 time so far.

Truck frames use plain jane steel with a 1mil ecoat. Unibody uses more rust resistant metallurgy and even galvanized sections with paint up to 9mil thick. Manufacturers only care how it looks to retail customers. Thats why the body on Toyota do not rust because that is what the new car buyer sees and then disposes of it in 5 years. Yes my FJ looks beaut up top and nasty underneath.

I threw on a set of Morimoto XB LED headlights on my '17 F150 in 2020, and have been enjoying them ever since. They make great aftermarket headlights, only negative is the lenses over their housing chip far too easily. Got a nasty chip from an 18 wheeler hauling uncovered gravel, on my first interstate drive, only a month after installation. OEM lenses never got chipped in the 3+ years of driving after purchasing new in '17. Morimoto, just needs to install true oem quality housings, then their product will be 5 stars all day long.

I think the 4Runner Trd Pro should come stock with a supercharger, especially for the price of a new Trd Pro. I also agree, the 4Runners are extremely underpowered stock, then after all the modifications, it's a turtle! Maybe it's adequate for "flat-landers" who live at or near sea-level with no mountains, but for those of us in the Mountain west at elevation, it's not even close to enough. I wish Toyota would keep everything the same from the 5th Gen, minus the motor and tranny, in the new 6th Gen. Then add the Tundra's new motor and tranny in the 6th Gen 4Runner and watch those 4Runners fly off the dealerships.

Great build PT! I am on the fence about buying one of these myself. I like these but do wonder what a true lexus equivalent would be like. The GX is actually a Toyota Prado which I think was sold a long side the 4runner in other countries. Same drive train, similar equipment, similar utility, but not quite the same as the 4runner. Similar to the G37 and Q50. I also wish there was still a v8 option like in the previous gen. I like the GX but I'm not a fan of the styling like you guys said.

Great video. I planned on maybe getting rid of my 2013 Nissan Titan Pro4X. It has 396,000 kms and runs perfect. Just hard on gas. Seems to me that the 4 Runner doesn’t get much better mpgs then my Titan. Always looking for vehicles with longevity and it’s a toss up now between new RAV4 or 4 Runner. Just can’t decide. I know the Rav non hybrid will still get way better mpgs then the 4 Runner. But can I get used to driving a Rav every day

Comment coming in 2 years late - if you have already solved the issue, disregard the following: Chrome finish handles usually have a really good adhesion for vinyl. Check with your local wrap shops if they'd be open to de-chroming just the handles for you.

I rented 2021 sr5 and the 1st impression was twitchy breaks, strange different steering maybe slower so it felt bit loose (ofcourse it's not loose), power didn't bother me although it's only 5 speed, i found the original squishy suspension kind of fun so much better then my 2000 Tacoma i use to have, i got in use to all of it quick

Yeah but it’s gone after a few snow storms and highway driving. I rustproof mine at the end of November and by January, it’s gone and everything gets covered in salt. And doesn’t help if it’s all rust already. Weekly car washes helps more.

I am stoked that PT loves this thing, but I am just not feelin' it. For $10,000 less with equivalent mileage and year, I got my wife an E70 X5M back in early 2020, and it hasn't given us a single problem over 40,000 miles. I have done probably $2,000 in preventative maintenance, but it's surprisingly easy to work on and FCP Euro's lifetime warranty is clutch. 550hp/500tq TTV8, AWD, 6000 tow rating, enormous brakes, and the entire interior is heated/cooled leather...for $19K. Easy call for me.

I have an old digital camera from like 2007 and it has corrupted files on it. I don't understand how a file can get corrupted from a camera that made it. 🤔 For the transmission cooler block off, i would make a thin, black aluminum plate that can bolt on the cooler with like 2 bolts. Overkill? Maybe, but it would look OEM.

It's interesting to note the towing capacity of the GX460 with the 4.6L V8. Is there anything else on the GX460 that increases the towing capacity to 6500 as opposed to the 5k 4runner capacity? I just towed a 4500 pound with a trailer and my 4runner handled it pretty well except it was working on the hills. I am assuming a supercharger and maybe some beefier brakes would help me tow that boat comfortably over a pass but just wanted to get your thoughts seeing that you have the supercharger. Like you I am not looking to drive a big truck or Sequioa around every day due to gas mileage so the 4runner is a huge win in that regards.
