The whole "overambitious game that fails at the most basic aspects" thing is something I have a weird fondness for. They just have this unique charm to them that I can't help but appreciate. Most people hate NeverDead, but that's a game I quite enjoy for the same kind of reasons.

I can understand why companies nowadays don't try those overambitious ideas, but god I wish more popular games tried going to the more experimental side of things instead of the usual safe path.
Even if it's clear that this game is broken, I was amused hearing all this ideas it tried to pull off. It even makes me want to play it myself. But seeing how it turned out, it's understandable why we don't see this much experimentation nowadays. It's truly a double-edged sword.

    • @Willie6785
      @Willie6785 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I think there may be a balance to be struck.
In part, big game companies are always trying to spend less and profit more, which I think impacts the ability for devs to be experimental, as AAA's follow a more strict formula. On the other hand, some of the best regarded games were either laser-focused on improving few mechanics and ideas by other games that were good, or put in the extra work to refine more experimental mechanics and have them shine through.
I think it's understandable, sure, but good management of those ideas can make them happen without having to sacrifice anything and still manage to profit enough, just maybe not as much, and that shouldn't be a problem imo. Thankfully the indie scene still has plenty of that, I'd say.

A friend of mine got this game for free. A local radio station was doing a promotional event outside a Walmart, and they were giving the game away. He invited me over, said "hey, let's check this game out", and we spent the entire night playing through the game (to a point). It was a fascinating mix of good ideas and bad implementation, and the buggy nature of the game was particularly interesting. I think we got to a forced driving chase scene that was infuriatingly difficult before we finally gave up. It wasn't the difficulty, it was that the game decided to not load the finish area. We had been passing the controller back and forth for a while, and I think I was the first to make it to the end, but we both did it a few times with the game just not loading the finish. Eventually, he did get past that part on his own, and while I don't think he ever finished it, he did show me some of the stuff that existed beyond.
It's weird how this game is almost good, but comes just shy. Like, if this had a year to polish it up, it very well could have been a masterpiece. It's too bad that it'll forever be remembered (or, well, forgotten) as a mediocre action horror title.

Although it claims to be a reboot of Alone in the Dark (which it is), it's more or less like a sequel to The New Nightmare, not Alone in the Dark 3. This game likely ignores The New Nightmare and instead chose to continue after AitD 3, but the issue now is with Carnby himself. Edward never had a scar across his eye in the original games, it was only made up here. This version of the dude is more in line with New Nightmare's Edward Carnby. Why? Well The New Nightmare (supposedly) takes place 75 years after Alone in the Dark 3, and the Carnby in TNN was born in 1968, being 33 in that game, so he would have been 39 to 40 in Alone '08, not over 100 years old! Eden Games tried to tie this game in with the original games in some way so it would make sense, but it doesn't make sense, it's nonsense!!! And I have not seen TNN's Carnby with a scar unless something bad happened to him after that game but before Alone '08.
I'm trying my best to make sense of this nonsense but the lore of this game goes so far out the fucking window at this point that I pretty much gave up on trying to make sense of the PLOT!!!

The gameplay is not as janky as that dude says especially since youre a normal peasant and not a sekiro warrior. This is not a fighting game as youre supposed to evade them too. I played it 3 times and dont remember issues with the gameplay except the timed driving scene in the beginning where the steeet is falling apart. To be fair, he goes over why it was reviewed so poorly.
It has a lot of innovation, yes, but it's horrific to actually *play.* If you're someone like minimme or Uncle Derek and you appreciate ambitious products that aren't necessarily GOOD products, you can get a mile of enjoyment out of even the jankest pieces of crap. If those things being stitched together as poorly as Carnby's "injury" patches bothers you, you're gonna toss the game out the window in half an hour.
There's a reason other devs stole those pieces of gameplay...it's called refining it into something better. Fire? Far Cry 2. Camera switching? Hell, Jedi Knight already did that years earlier between guns and lightsaber perspectives. Open world driving...well, uh, that's been refined for close to three decades now, you can't just point to one game there.

I can remember renting this game as a kid and being very excited to try it, and I can still remember some of the mechanics that I really thought were cool, like it being one of the first FP games where you could look down and see your body, and your inventory was in your jacket. Really taught me a lot about what makes a game immersive.. but what also can make a game feel broken and torturous to get through. Never finished the game because as a kid it was too obtuse and confusing, but not many other games have stuck with me in the same way, especially for how little of it i played

I feel like this game would be a great candidate for a vr remake. The game has like no UI whatsoever. You could just look down and reach into your jacket. The climbing and stuff are weird to implement in vr but the melee combat and the slower pace of the game in general works well in VR.

I remember playing this when it came out and just being absolutely fascinated (and frustrated) with the mechanics. It was impressive how detailed yet monotonous they were. I would love to see them take another shot at these, really master the original vision. I know they’re making a new one but survival horror has been playing it safe for quite some time, at least mechanics wise. I commend them for trying new things, and I hope we see more developers taking risks (and taking their time) with their work.

I was the Main Playthrough QA Tester on this game in Sunnyvale California at ATARI. I spent so much time on this game, about a year and a half. I worked the Game Day at Atari in San Francisco and the GameStop managers Expo in Vegas demoing this game and I still love thinking about those times. Then I worked on Test Drive Unlimited 2, Champions Online , as well as the Official Star Trek MMO on the launch teams while ATARI owned Cryptic Studios in Los Gatos. Life is crazy, enjoy every second you have, because as King Kai says: "Change can Strike like Lightning!"...

The soundtrack in this game is so fucking good. Olivier Deriviere always delivers.
The PS2/Wii version of this game was essentially the same main levels and story beats from the next gen version, with the open Central Park cut. The CG cutscenes are a mix of the next gen scenes and new CGs with the different character designs. The use of fire is still a thing, but it is completely scripted. Funnily enough, it has only one ending as opposed to the 2 endings from the next gen version, but even so it is different. It was made by Hydravision Entertainment, the devs responsible for the Obscure games.
