  • Why even ask this question? A word is a word, what could be simpler? But it's not as simple as it seems. And it's something linguists don't have a fully satisfying answer for. Produced for Mental Floss

This reminds me of the time my Polish wife asked if 'horseradish' was one word, or two words, or hyphenated. I answered honestly: 'I have no idea'.
A year later we went to the US to visit my family, so we went to the supermarket to buy food so Kasia could show off her amazing cooking skills for a 'meet the wife party'.
So, looking at only two jars of horseradish, we saw all three forms: one jar was labeled 'horseradish' and the second jar had 'horse-radish' on the paper label and 'horse radish' on the lid. And yes, our laughter got quite a few odd looks -- English is crazy.

The breakfast part is more or less correct. Break fast works as to separate words to break a fast because you are breaking the fast of the night. If you don't end from 6pm the previous night until 7am the next morning that was technically a 12 hour fast.

Great video. Just one thing: One word for "the sun is shining over there in the morning"? Like "east"?

If you want some fun linguistic irony, imagine being ignorant of the root-word, concerning the word 'ignorant'.
So many people don't grasp this part of the definition. They IGNORE the root word in 'ignorant'.

Why can't phrases like "Mother of Pearl" and "put up with" be considered compound words the same way that "ice cream" and "cry baby" are?
It's a rhetorical question. They can be. The fluidity and malleability of language are what make it fun.
Non-rhetorical question: is there such a thing as a simple question about language that actually is simple?
