    I would absolutely love to see you explode things up more, really diving into fixing the city! I could see that becoming even a longer series, 10-20 episodes of goodness to see your fixing process. And no, it's not realistic, but neither was the original city, so I wouldn't worry about that too much.

      yeah I second this thought. I would love to see you bring this city (probably kicking and screaming bang up to date with all the new content and everything you have learned in the past) its always more of a challenge to "fix" something rather than just do it right the first time!! maybe make it up to the poor abused terrain and environment with a really beautiful and respectful nature preserve up on some of those precipitous mountain heights??

    Sometimes you just need to destroy everything for the best, and considering state of this city, you need a whole demolition crew here.

    32:16 yes it does drive me crazy! I love seeing you sledgehammer all the ugly stuff, it is super satisfying. This series is definitely set up to be my favorite because I make a lot of these mistakes in my games and seeing how you fix them gives me some great ideas for my cities!

      I abandoned one of my cities because it had 5mil in the bank and 1mil in debt. Everytime I open the save it only lasts for a few minutes.
      My second one was just ugly.
      I created a new map today with lots of challenging mountain terrain and wide rivers based on my home country. I think it'll be fun being forced to be more creative with the terrain

    I still love the fact that CPP hasn't spotted that, last episode, he spend a bunch of time on a cargo facility by a big industrial area... then deleted the industrial area. Now he's firing all his truck traffic from the train station and warehouses.... right through a suburban residential development. Should probably put that area back to industry and remove some of the *other* hodge-podge areas.

    Swing that hammer. A great thing about this is that I can recognize how the city got that way, as it was built small scale in segments as it expanded over the map, which is how we all do it in vanilla at first. This is helping us to visualize for the later stages better. It's actually a good feature of the game, that reminds me of Civ a bit, when you start the distances between the first cities and explore seem huge, but as you grow everything gets smaller. So easy to tip over into master planning

    This series is the first cities skylines I've watched in a long tim. I cannot stress enough the pain of seeing residential zoned directly on a 4 lane road (next to the tunnel) that will have to be crossed everytime if they want to go anywhere. Pedestrian safety nightmare.

    Really like the tunnels and bringing rationality to the spaghetti.
    However, the issue with traffic isn't the road network, roundabouts, or timed traffic lights -- it's volume. The road traffic, especially the industrial traffic, needs to move off the roads and into the rails.
    This city cries out for a cargo rail hub and internal rail network.

  • @OviD11111
    @OviD11111 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Phil, regarding the bad traffic in the industrial area, I think the major problem is funneling! Look at all the destinations of these little disconnected zones, they all must flow over the same roads and then back again.
    Roundabouts are for medium traffic max, so they just choked on you. And while the traffic lights would have worked better with dedicated turning lanes and lane connectors, they couldnt have coped with the funneling.
    That are needs more alternative road connections, so traffic has a chance to disperse!
    This series is great fun, thanks Phil!

  • @Dylan_Lanckman
    @Dylan_Lanckman ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For the giant culdesac area at the trumpet interchange: you could delete the latest roundabout and build one on the trumpet interchange instead and reconnect those dead ends bumping on to it. The artery road is probably better off as a viaduct so that those 2 neighborhoods can be reconnected again. Also, the buss station I believe is better off being connected straight to the roundabout in the back.

    Honestly, as long as the city feels the same, I don’t mind how much it changes. Plus, bits like what you pointed out definitely do drive me crazy. The other bits would be zigzagging toads between two outer roads with triangular zones. But I also really enjoy the fact that you’re adding more direct roads, even if it means bulldozing, since people can get around easier than having to move on a grid all the time.

  • @paperaddict3756
    @paperaddict3756 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I feel like a decent way to fix the roundabout/industrial area is to create a connection on to the 6 lane bridge for the left hand side. And probably rezone a bit of the culdesack area. I normally never have a bad word for a roundabout, but I don't see it working in that space, there's just too much traffic. I'd say go back to the one roundabout and separate the junctions so theres only two connections on that primary road in and very little crossover. Alternatively you could put a roundabout at the very edge of the intersection and have three spouts coming off for each direction.

  • @flyingfan18
    @flyingfan18 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The main problem at 37:45 to me seems like it’s the original roundabout. There’s way too much traffic heading into it than it can handle, I don’t know if it’s already optimized with the lane manager tool or not. If not, I would start with that and if it is, the whole area needs to be rebuilt. I chose that time specifically because you can clearly see why the roundabout is the bottleneck: The highway exit serves:
    1. The industrial district right next to it
    2. The industrial districts on the second exit of the roundabout
    3. The district across the river
    4. The huge residential/commercial district on the first exit across the other river
    And the last point seems to be where a lot of people are heading to, which creates the other issues. My suggestion is thus to build a flowing interchange in place of that roundabout, which prioritizes movement to from the highway to the right into area 4. Or to build a separate highway connection serving only that area, which could connect into the two rightmost streets, by turning them into oneway streets.

    For inspiration for the highway extension along the mountainside, I'd love to see something like I-70 through Glenwood Canyon with the sides of the highway stacked in places. This is also commonly seen in mountainous cities like Pittsburgh.

    The issue with the roundabouts is that they're simply beyond capacity, and so was the light. I guess that's why roundabouts are considered a mid-level traffic solution, not a truly heavy traffic solution. The solution there is to identify the through traffic that isn't part of the industrial traffic and give that traffic its own completely separate path to the highway. Alas, all the crazy mountains constraining the build is why you probably didn't have that thought yourself, which is how real cities end up with problems like that which never get truly solved. It worked okay in 1868 when this was a small mining community, but now it's a metropolis and the mountains ain't movin'.

    In VB, can you make all the transit in Palma Del Fuego be Trolleybuses. I think It would make sense because The island is so hilly, and the people there would probably want a quieter, greener form of transit. you should put the depot on the road that leads to the Park maintenance depot.

    Hi Phil, thanks for the video!
    At 15mins, you point out how sloping the roads leaves buildings way up on blocks (and, sometimes, buried in pots, lol). There's a way to get them all back to road height:
    After sloping, use the Soften Terrain tool all the way along the road you've sloped. Then go to MoveIt and, setting it to buildings only, select all the buildings along the sloped road. Then click the ellipsis button in MoveIt, and one of its options is "Set to terrain height." Et voilà, all the buildings are now back at road height.

    In the industrial area with the two roundabouts, I would go back to the previous intersection, get dedicated lanes going and than make a bridge beetween the two halfs of the area to provide local connectivity that works independant of the arterial. And maybe have a look if all the appropriate settings for the roundabout are used, like entering a blocked junction being enabled on the roundabout and not when entering (although it is your build Biffafy it just a smidge). And also maybe add a second small connection to the highway multiple small junctions are better than one big junction where you just funnel all traffic (Lee Hawkins said that in one of his videos).
    I love your builds and have been watching since week two of Bluffside Crossing. Thank you for the time you put in to all of them, you are amazeing.

    Ehi CCP, I don't know if this message will ever be read. One thing that I noticed when enlarging nodes (like you did in the last roundabout) is that at a certain point you have the opposite result getting more vehicles stopping instead of continuously flowing out. You can notice this at 38:15 the traffic coming from the right into the roundabout that flows and after enlarging the node they all start stopping

    The added roundabout near the highway exit, the one you upgraded to 4 lane, YUMBL has a TM:PE "fix" where the two right lanes exit, and then at each junction lane 3 moves to lane 2 and lane 4 moves to lane 3, the result being that vehicles will not endlessly circle because they will be forced to exit at some point

    38:10 should've put the second round-a-bout at the highway (creating a dog bone) and either backed those cul-de-sacs off some more or connected them. Then you could reconnect all 5 roads back in if you wish between the two round-a-bouts. After you have all of your connections, use TM:PE to ban any traffic from making any kind of crossing movement at every intersection. if anyone wants to go from one side to the other, they can right turn onto the main road, use the round-a-bout to go back the other way and then right turn again into the area they were headed to. If they're coming from the highway and wanting to go left, they can go to the second round-a-bout, use that to turn around and make a right turn into the area. Lastly you could use intersection marking tool to add median's back in the intersections on the main road since no one will be crossing over. You also will not need any traffic lights since there are no movement conflicts so extra benefit there, and with 5 connecting roads if you reconnect all of them, you're not cul-de-sac'd anymore.

    In the UK you can see where roads have been upgraded to collectors. They don’t bulldoze the side streets, instead they block them off with concrete bollards. An alternative is to make them one way so you only have half as many entries and exits. 16:49 I have recreated this by bulldozing the connections and drawing them back but not quite connecting them. If you get them close enough the footpaths connect but not the roads.

    The large collector going to downtown needs to be treated as an arterial, since there is no highway going there. Less intersections, local bridges or tunnels, maybe a couplet to avoid lane crossing. Right what is essentially functioning as an inner city highway stops at every local intersection.
    I dont think you need to bring a highway downtown. That would only ruin the cityscape and make it inaccessible to pedestrians. You just need proper roadway hierarchy.

    For 39:15 you need a normal junction with traffic lights. The industrial zones need 4 lane asymetrical road with 3 lanes towards the junction. For the turning lanes: two lefts and one right should be enough. If more traffic goes in the other direction, switch the middle one. For the phase, 3 should be enough. One phase for straight and right on the main road, 1one phase for the lefts on the main road and one phase for the side streets.

    Sledge hammer.... oh god that was a good feeling. I'm remodeling my mom's house, and although it wasn't a full "remodel", there were things that had to come out to make room for the new stuff. Smashing it down was gratifying. If any of you don't know, go to your local hardware store, buy what you need to make a small closet/shed, then smash it, seriously... or just go to a smash room, lol.
    At 24:33 I feel it would look nice if less streets and have them terraced, on the hillside up from the hwy. Make it like a high income spot, high density.
    And now (at the end) is perfect time for public transport.

    Hey CPP, I noticed that you're "elimination" of the highway double-back issue (8:30) would be removed after you added that new intersection (around 22:00) - they could do the 180 there! Keep up the great content!

    Absolutely loving this series so far. One request, I feel like the spaghetti interchange should be kept. I live pretty close to Birmingham in the UK and it has a famous (some would argue infamous) spaghetti junction from the 60s (I think). It is both beloved and bemoaned in the same breath, and it had its 50th anniversary celebrated by Heinz. Bracket it in amongst all the other bits that make the soul of the city.

    Playing city builders for so long, the best thing I've learned is that the demolishing tool is the best you have in your toolbelt. Sometimes you really try to put a square peg in a circular hole and you just need a sledgehammer to fix the whole situation.

    The cliffs in this city are crazy - you can’t convince me that it’s safe for all those houses and industry to be based right next to a murderous cliff. I think a lot of the landscaping needs fixing. The water levels seem off too - such huge drops and cliffs that make the water levels seem too low.
    I love seeing drastic demolitions so please keep using the bulldozer 🤣🛠️

    For the cul-de-sac'd industrial area towards the end caused by the double roundabouts: consider adding right-in/right-out intersections rather than truncating all access. It'll help relieve traffic pressure on the roundabouts, fix the cul-de-sac issue, and should minimally conflict with existing traffic since there would be no throughs or lefts. Just make sure they're stop or give way and not signalized. Also consider add/drop lanes to give turning drivers someplace to turn onto or from.

    Would it be a good idea, there where you now have two round-abouts, to basically make one big oval-about stretching from the highway offramps to the bigger round-about?

    I feel like the high rise downtown is in the wrong location. It would feel way better near the river. And you could get some nice beachfront properties that require less circulation near the water. Or parks, parks would be cool

    38:41 this is a classic mistake I always make when I futz with problem spots too long, breaking connectivity to eliminate a high traffic intersection and then in turn that lack of connectivity makes it worse for the next intersection over.
    It looks like the main problem here is that the arterial road serving the industrial area is also the main way to get to the residential/commercial area on the other side of the bridge. If there was an arterial bypassing that industrial area going directly from the freeway to the neighborhood on the other side of the river, that first arterial wouldn't be so jammed up.

    I’m late as always but I love that you’re redoing/fixing your old cities, such a great idea! 😊
    But sometimes I question some of your decisions, it’s like you’re just staring too much at the problem that you don’t see the solution.. 😅
    For instance all last episode of this series I was like “turn the cargo station around, just turn it around.!!” 😂🥴
    Same in this episode when you created a viaduct to stop the despawning of cargo vehicles 😂😂😂😅
    Just turn it around Phil, please! You’re driving me insane over here 😮‍💨
    (I know it’s been eight months since you uploaded this & I’ll probably continue being bothered by it) 😂

    32:36 you would HATE the street I grew up on - I’m not sure how they do it out west, but I grew up on a half mile long dead end in New England - that has 3 major hills! It ends in a very very steep hill and a little turn around - always a fun time for the school bus driver, I’m sure.
    You should look at some NE cities! I love the way that they’re formed around the landscape and traditional routes, with very little planning for the future. Everything is odd and fun and there’s always a stone wall in the way.

    Where you tried the signal and then a roundabout, a second freeway interchange with a parallel route would help (beside the neighborhood, across the river, and to the mountains). Alternatives let traffic spread out instead instead of concentrate. I also had problems with traffic leaving the freeway, going through town, and back onto the freeway instead of staying on the freeway through the trumpet interchange. I guess the AI thought routing on local roads was a short cut. I had to make a disconnect, to keep through traffic on the freeway. Fun series! Thank you!

    The height of realism, this city was about to collapse and on the brink of destruction anyway. Drastic measures had to be taken to get it to survive and thrive. Bring that hammer in. Love the videos. Put that firestation somewhere useful as usually you don't have enough, there must be another zone in the city where it is needed as fires seem to follow you, Phil.
