One of those songs that in an instant takes you back to a time in your life which holds a strong memory, good or bad. For me, it's a memory that's haunted me for decades, and only now am I dealing with it, and exorcising the demons it represents. New Model Army have been a source of inspiration and at times a guiding light for three decades, and continue to be so. Long may they continue to make good music that makes us think, and long may they continue to guide me...
@MadsAndersen1 I think it was much earlier than 2003. I've got this track on their 'Living In The Rose - The Ballads' EP which came out in 1993 if I'm not mistaken. It is a great tune though, I'll agree with you on that.
It appears down to the lyrics they were up in Derry on the 12th night and drove back to Belfast after it stopping at Glenshane Pass and maybe his oul mate was a drummer in one of the bands. Saw an interview where Justin said he worked in East Belfast in a youth club for a year.
a very beautiful and enigmatic song. i don't understand the story of it, maybe not meant to, but it draws on and evokes feelings of when a few times in my life i've walked away from treachery, and something done that was wrong, and have then seen someone else in a different light to how i had done.
Justin lived in Belfast for some time during the troubles... We likely wont know if the story is from Justins perspective or a story about someone else... But the story is basically the narrator crossing the barricades that seperated Catholic and Protestant areas... when his friend Billy wont. Two people who refuse to compromise their ideals or sacrifice their integrity... even though it means the end of their relationship and they both know. Despite there still being "love" between them for want of a better word... and probably both understanding the others choice.

This song will always hold a special place in my heart. It brings me right back to a certain point in my life.
Haunting brillant song still today nearly 30 years on
One of the great bands and criminally underappreciated. Saw them first in about 1984/1985
I've seen them several times in the 90s, but I've loved them since the first recordings...
