      @jadams3427 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@nothingsurprisesmeanymore That particular Scania refuse truck has the L cab. This has an extremely low entry at the door and very good walk through across the cab. That does come at some cost when re-packaging engine components below. Even with the low air filter on other cab types you have have a high air intake, if you expect you may need to go through floods. Driving at speed like this refuse truck did would easily flood most front air intakes. One should drive in to make a wave, then ease back and drive in the trough behind the wave.

      Part one of the issue is the the height of the intake like you say, but even then all these clowns who go powering in, filling the engine bay with water and ramming it up the intake.
      It’s like these people heard “push a bow wave” and didn’t bother to listen to how to do it.

    • @bigworldparty
      @bigworldparty ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes some of the drivers that eased in and avoid a big splash into the engine compartment did ok. The water in some shots wasn't deep enough to hit the intake, unless the driver hit with a big splash. Maybe drivers are afraid if they go slower, they will get stuck, hence the mistake of powering in.

If cars reverse, the chance of water getting to engine will be less. The water may go via exhaust but if running continuously the pressure may prevent water entering enough inside exhaust pipes.

    The first one is called "Buttsbury Wash" in Essex near where I live. It floods regularly and can get much worse than this. The SatNav doesn't recognise when it is flooded and takes cars down the winding road which is a shortcut to the nearest towns. There are warning signs but they stay up even when it is passable. A big lorry cannot do a three point turn and go back up the narrow road and it would be difficult to reverse over half a mile to get back to the alternative through road.

    What so many don't realise is that on modern motors the air intake is often located much lower in the engine compartment than in older days, to draw cooler air. This means that any flood, or ford, deeper than about six inches, is going to be risky. Just don't chance it, unless you have a spare £5,000 for a new engine. Nonetheless, it makes entertaining watching!

      Theoretically, mounting an air intake lower and to the side, perhaps directly behind the radiator or even above fed by a bonnet (hood) scoop avoids engine heat and so generates more power and is more efficient. This is because cold air is denser and allows better combustion. If filters are clean the power and efficiency advantage is probably around 5% or more. The more stuff you can take out of the air intake path the better.. if you could get away with it, having no air filter at all would provide a huge boost but would sooner or later result in a foreign object finding its way into the engine, especially when the intake is lower. F1 cars usually have no filter or just a basic wire filter and the intake tends to be huge and higher behind the driver's head...

    The sudden rush of cold water over the engine can also crack metal as well as shorting everything out, not just the air intake, once you stall you end up with water being pulled in via the exhaust too, look at how much water comes out of the exhaust on that first car, those cars engines will be fooked.

      Yes thats the point. All gearboxes have vents on the top for instance. Nothing on a normal car's drive train ist build to be submerged. Every car takes some damage from it, even if it does make it.

      There's already cold water cooling the engine at all times. It's water up the air intake into the engine that's the killer. Water doesn't compress like air so metal has to bend . Engine toast. That's why all off roaders have air intakes up to roof level.

    • @altvamp
      @altvamp ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Fake-moon-landing. Silly comment, It's cooling the inside, not the outside or the manifold, or the exhaust, or the cat, or anything else and the operating temperature is around 80C anyway. If you touch a hot engine you'll get burnt.

    I used to live near Butsbury ford. A lot of people get confused with It.
    It only has water in it when it rains and everyone just thinks “well, I went through it last week without a problem “
    I live down the road from Welney wash now. When it floods they close the barriers to stop people going through it when it gets too high.

      I used to live in wisbech and drove through Welney a lot before they put a stop to it when it's under water, it never ceased to amaze me how many people would try to drive through it in ordinary family cars, you can't even see where the road is. It does however make you wonder why they haven't built a bridge or at least raised the road when the diversion is 30 miles?

      I went past the barriers last New Year’s Day about 3 in the morning, the water was only about 4 inch deep but it was a slow drive through as the car is so low.
      it would cost too much for them to raise the road the 3foot that would make it always open. The diversion is a pain, 16 foot is a rollercoaster road that’s getting worse and downham is now just as bad. At least when it’s closed I can’t hear the lorries going down the main road.

      @@carlbarkham3115 you're right there mate, the roads around West Norfolk are a disgrace and as far as I can see the only reason for not addressing this is because there just isn't enough money that side of the A10. If there is money to build a link road between the A47 southern bypass and the NDR surely there must be money available to bridge Welney wash?
