I just have to say you have very much helped me understand this particular social system, i was having difficulty for my global trend 10 page paper but with your paper it helped me greatly and i finished the assignment with 3 minutes to spare Thank you!
Maan you should be a way more popular youtuber this was well put together, well articulated, thoroughly discussed and delivered in a way that any random person can understand what social stratification is and its origin. I urge you to do another video in your free time I promise you it'll be a smash hit!
One more thing, you did a great job talking about the universal (all humans in all cultures) aspects of stratification. Sometimes this point is overlooked.
Glad you noticed it. Most social scientists push against universals, but not me! Its important for social scientists to identify commonalities as much as difference.
If you write "the emergent and/or purposeful categorization of people ..." , than "emergent" refers to people. But what you actually wanted to refer to was "categorization".
Social stratification occurs in many different areas at many different levels within social structure (e.g. racial identity, gender identity, religious affiliation, norms, values, etc.) while economic stratification occurs within economic institutions (e.g. employment in a given sector, like education or banking, or science and technology fields etc.). However, the two are very closely related as social stratification often provides the foundation for economic stratification. My example of the link between gender stratification and economic and political stratification in the video should help.
some of the things claimed in this film are untrue. Especially the claim that stratification is the human universal. While it is true that all modern societies are stratified there are also egalitarian tribes, most of which were wiped out by the stratified societies. Human history is far older than the 10 thousand years during which civilization has existed. Before that egalitarian tribes would of been far more prevalent than stratified ones simply because of the huge imbalance in resources a stratified society needs, and as a result the complexities that arise in governing such systems, through force and propaganda in order to keep the low tiers of the society at the bottom and subservient to the top.
Matt, Thanks for the critique. I disagree (completely) with it, but glad that you watched the vid and thought about it. The simple fact is, even in the "egalitarian" societies that you speak of and the idealized equality that you refer to was more or less limited to material wealth (i.e. everyone had access to the same materials, or put another way, they were all limited in their access to resources by their environment and limited knowledge and had to share for the most part). However, stratification still existed because in such societies AGE was still a determinant of power (parents have more knowledge and power because they know how to survive)! Some feminists (e.g. Joan Huber, Janet Saltzman-Chafetzs, Ester Boserup, and others) even argue that sex was also a stratifying force due to the need for women to constantly reproduce for group survival (albeit the stratification was way less influential than in modern societies where gender identity has been polarized in favor of male power). So in short, equality within any society is highly improbable (unless your society is 2...al la Simmel), if not impossible, and thus stratification will exist in any place or setting where differences in identity, ability, and knowledge play a direct role in determining cooperation, competition, conflict and exchange between humans.
Robert M. Anthony That's simply a logical conclusion gained from observing a modern society, and the way modern society works, because the social phenomena you have described observably exist today, but that is a mistake repeated quite regularly. For one you have to just look at how differently a modern society functions. People in a modern society for example go through divorces, court-cases, they find themselves isolated due to losing a job or changing schools. This was not the reality in tribes where the main challenges of modern life simply did not exists, precisely because of how these tribes functioned socially. There were and still are societies which are reverse dominant. Simply put civilization can be characterized by a relationship of dictators and and the rest. Where the dictator, either elected or gained power through force, has to also protect their position through force. In order for a society to function it need complex systems of indoctrination or a powerful military that will force people by the bludgeon. This could not have existed in tribes of as little as 50-200 people as any potential "dictator" could have been dealt with easily. Another observable factor is nature, while stratification does exist within certain species, it is fundamentally different. For example in gorillas, the dominant gorilla may get his choice of mate and a larger piece of the food. That's like an older brother getting a larger piece of cake then his younger sister, stratified yes, but how? The stratification of modern civilization has been responsible for the slavery of millions of people for instance. That is completely different. Where as the brother still sees his sister as a human being, the extreme stratification of civilization makes some people demoted to sub human status, in the eyes of the powerful literally..

An important part to add to my assignment.

Hello. Quite tired here. Been researching like crazy but cannot find the difference between social stratification and economic stratification.
