I love how the main goal of society as a whole is equality and then we get deeper in and see labels of who someone's going to be because status, race, color, gender, etc.

If anyone wants to argue with me about the info presented in this video, please provide some sources.
I feel this video was objective in that some people have harder chances than others to succeed in life.
And for some reason people think that anything that mentions race, gender or equality equals communism.

I just want to tell all of the people with poor parents: you don't have to live that way. My parents gambled, smoked, drank and spent all of their money and complained how "the poor get poorer". Meanwhile, I had to pay for all of my own college, but I worked as I went to school, and now I'm out of debt, I own a house, I love my job, happily married, and all because I saved my money rather than spent it at the casino, bar or restaurant. You don't have to be a victim of your parents behavior. You CAN "pick yourself up by your bootstraps" if you want it enough. Another important idea; it's not how much you make, it has everything to do with how much you SAVE. So instead of buying cigarettes, liquor, lotto tickets, or fast food, save that money for troubles you may face in the future. It will change your life.

There's a bit of an issue with racial wealth inequality comparing the medians-it actually undersells the story. The median quintile doesn't really own much in any racial group, so comparing median white wealth to median black wealth doesn't communicate the severity of the gap. This is where mean is the appropriate tool: the mean wealth gap between white and black folks is quite a lot more than the median wealth gap, since nearly all wealth is concentrated in the top quintile and above.

I'm not worried about income inequality, people need motivation to work. Not worried about wealth inequality either, if someone likes to save for a rainy day, that's a good thing that buffers us from things like the 2008 crash.
What we need to fight is income immobility. We need to look at why it's difficult to get out of poverty, and why being born in a wealthy family is a strong indicator of your own earning potential. This is a sign of many issues, from discrimination to a failing education system.

I live on the social fringe because I became disabled due to medical reasons at 25, the current system has no protocol for such a situation. Also I have learned over the years that I am now in a catch 22, as it is the amount of aid that I receive is not a livable amount. In order to increase this amount IF I reach retirement age I need to work, at which point my aid is decreased. Damned if I do damned if I do not, I chose to be proactive for two reasons, I want to do what I can to not further burden my family and avoid becoming property of the state stuck in a hospital.

Is the sociologist who make that control? If so, what kind of control is it?

I'm pretty sure she meant : "Even if you gather statistics about income in the selected sample."

  • @Pfhorrest
    @Pfhorrest 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

One important thing to note here is that this is all talking about HOUSEHOLD income, which is not the same as PERSONAL income. The average American household has approximately two people, and the average personal income is unsurprisingly about half of the average household income.
Also of note is they're not mentioning the difference between the mean and the median here, and only talking about the median. For incomes, either personal or household, the mean is nearly TWICE the median. So imagine you take all the money all Americans make and divide it up evenly per person. That's the mean. The median is about half of that, meaning that about half of Americans make not only less than that average (mean), they make less than HALF of that average. The percentile who make around the mean are about the 75th percentile, meaning 75% of the country make less than "average" and only 25% make more than it.
To illustrate with rounder approximate numbers: all the income in the country divided up evenly is around $100k per each average two-person household, or about $50k per person. But it's not half of households and people above those numbers and half below; it's a quarter above and three-quarters below. And most of those three-quarters are FAR below; half of households make below about $50k, what a single "average" person should be expected to make, and half of individuals make less than around $25k each.

The thing about free market is if someone has money, that means someone gave the money to him. And unless the guy broke the law, that means both parties got something from the deal and had considered the terms to be good. Nobody is forcing anyone.
So, if a person has money, that means other people considered his good or services worthy of their money. If that person has people working for him, unless he is holding them prisoner, that means they consider the working conditions to be if not good, than better then the alternatives.

Just want to say, income will always be positively skewed. It makes sense when you consider that there is no upper bound, but there will always be a lower bound ($0). This means that the outliers or the extremes will always skew the data heavily.

The concept is interesting, as it is the real world. Ideology and personal preference does shape and mold social views or trends. It has been said that when you are born at the bottom, it's not that you can't get to the top. It's that others will keep you at the bottom because if you were to rise out of your lower social class, you might bump someone out from the upper class so you can get in. There's not enough room for everyone anywhere or everywhere, that's just how real life can be.

We are in an age of interventionism so severe we have actual college students openly talking about "Controlling the people" as a goal or purpose of government. We fundamentally cannot have a free market capitalist nation with this level of interventionism and moderate-severe amounts of socialism so blame that and dont soil the name of free market capitalism.

I like the video but I have to disagree on your last comment the fact is yes depending on what environment you grow in and your household income your future can be affected but that doesn't determine it. yes life will be much difficult if you grew up poor or easier if you grew up with money. For the middle class it could go either way. But I guess what you were saying is that the opportunities for poor income people in this country are very limited and that there are statistics on this fact, but that doesn't determine for all in that income bracelet, I just wish u that specified as well.
    Otherthan that nice video.😊☺👍💓

I feel like I have plenty of money and low cost of living. vs. a family of 4 who lives on 20,000 a year who struggle to get by. • @JRenardLeatherCo
    @JRenardLeatherCo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

i don't like that there was ZERO mention that most "households" in black communities are single-parent households (almost always single mothers). while most white households have two parents and that after 1-2 years post-baby, those parents BOTH work at least part time. STOP throwing numbers without context! and PLEASE start talking about personal choices that are common in large groups. the level of crime in black neighborhoods vs. white ones is ALWAYS higher, even adjusting for income. i'm black and grew up in Atlanta with a single mother. i saw where EVERYONE ELSE was headed, and got out of there ASAP! there was a cycle of excuses and bad choices despite better, lawful, hopeful options that people didn't even acknowledge was there.
it really seems like sociology is meant to tell the world that since well-of people are few and far between, that they are the bad ones and everyone else is being done wrong. this series is starting to go the way of CC Human Geography 😕

The phrasing of the degrees US-people is sad. You said that some only had a highschool degree, as if it was bad. I don't know the exact oppurtunites you have in the USA with this degree, but compared to Germany it seems ridiculous. Even our lowest degree the "Hauptschulabschluss" (which you mostly have to finish) is enough for most craftmanship and even some higher mechanics jobs.

Thing I have found about US politics is both sides don't like the state of things, they disagree deeply on how to solve the problems. On wealth inequality for example conservatives tend to advocate for equality of opportunity while socialists argue for more equity and collective management. Both sides don't trust the other with deciding things in a system based on compromise so nothing gets done lmao

And yes this was the same set of eggs. There is no same set price, so what's cheap for you, could be really expensive somewhere else. And since most people on welfare are not making enough money,if you're in a places where food is expensive and you're on welfare, you probably can't move to where food is cheaper.
so now you're stuck in a place where food is expensive and can't get food. This is what happens in places where they're are food deserts, (along with constintily cheap food, tending to be junk or fast food), it leaves people either hungry or unhealthy or both because their poor and food is expensive.

So am I, that makes sense, but let's say your income is more than 600 000$ per year, WHY DO YOU SO DESPERATELY NEED SO MUCH MONEY !? I'd have literally no idea what I could do to make use of that if not throwing it at poor people...

Qrow Branwen There is also the fact the Asians that come here come with a college education and didnt have their equal access to education and services shot down by Jim Crow last century. Now Black people dont have any generational wealth because the whites made damn sure they didnt have access to the market. Even black millionares in the present get treated differently but of course you dont want to talk about any of that.

You "anti-conservatives" are so deluded that you are advocating for restricting free speech as positive change, for example. Your minds have been so taken by propaganda that you feed on each other's delusions, in fact you are lead by passion and emotions, not reason and logic - so stfu about conservatives being in opposition to science. the progressives have been trying to rewrite history and change science to fit their ideologies. Bias is something we all have, but to let it rule over your critical thinking is to be so liberal that your brains fall out.

"Jim Crow no longer exists. additionally, blacks were making gains in income and employment and poverty relief until the welfare state came along and led to a massive surge in single moms."
Incorrect. Welfare existed well before Jim Crow ended. It was deemed "okay" until minorities were given access to the same social program.
Do you know what actually came quick on the heels of the end of Jim Crow?
      The "war on drugs".

What would that sentence even mean, if we took it seriously? People aren't "created" at all, for a start, and how could they possibly be "created equal" when they're all born into different circumstances?
Like, a platitude from the preamble of a centuries-old legal document isn't a fact or a binding moral precept.

If you are making it in life, you are lucky, If you have a roof to keep you dry and warm, food, health care, education etc, you are simply lucky. You had the right combination of childhood, education, parental guidance, brain chemistry, connections, investments, intelligence and information in order to get where you are.
You can't possibly think you were in control of any of those things. You were simply lucky. The only thing you have control over is what you do with what is given to you. But you don't control what was given to you, so the point is actually moot.
Those starving, in poverty, in social traps of backwards cultures and ideas, those with diseases and broken dreams, you were unlucky.
People hate that, because it brings into question their entire philosophy of life, karma, free-will, try and succeed. Everything the movies say, that if you work hard enough, you'll get somewhere.
We can't admit that some people just get the short end of the stick, because it's mathematically impossible for their to be winners if there are no losers.
I'm lucky, I feel an obligation to share any excess I have with those who just weren't lucky. I matter first, sure, but I don't need nor want a mansion while some people starve. I only want one as long as everyone at the VERY LEAST has their needs met.
I can't understand the callousness to think otherwise, or the complete fantasy world that is the guarantee that if you work hard enough, you're going to make it, and if you're not making it, you aren't working hard enough.
It's up there with believing in Santa. Didn't get any presents this year? That's because you didn't work hard enough to believe Billy. Too bad for you, you're lazy I guess.
People have the audacity to think they earned their luck. This shows very heavily in the bitterness of "MINE and I suffered, so you should too" culture in the USA and many other countries with high poverty rates. They think they earned things because they simply were lucky enough to get them.
You don't earn anything, not when there are people who work twice as hard as you and still don't make it. You were lucky. Things aren't balanced enough to just say we earned really anything, as in life we choose very little on what happens to us.
