Take what you will, but I think the people that ranked the list don't really like sharp blades, or maybe all the sharp lovers flock to feather. I think nacet is sharper than all the other blades on this list except for feather.
Yes me too! I really like the Nacet blades. I do however use Feather blades in my Feather AS-D2 as the razor is mild. Nacet and Braveheart razor are a good pairing for me and a Supershave X blade and Jagger 3one6 razor are great too. Love the Wilkinson sword blade and the Kai is pretty good. I don't get on very well with the Astra. Maybe I just haven't found the right razor and blade pairing. It's good fun though trying all the different combinations. Stay safe everyone! Dave.
Last week, I put aside my Gillette Fusion 5 razor, and I shaved with a Feather safety razor and Feather blades. I am 72, and the last time I regularly shaved with a safety razor was when I was 14 (Gillette safety razor and Gillette Blue blades.) What a trip down Memory Lane! Fortunately,I watched Geo before I started shaving! The Gillette Fusion 5 is a forgiving razor. The Feather razor is well-crafted and the blades are as sharp as surgical instruments. But the Feather safety razor, like all safety razors, will not suffer fools who shave in the shower. Wet shaving with safety razors and badger brushes is ideal for we Baby Boomers who want a good shave at a low cost per shave, and who possess the luxury of time to enjoy lathering and shaving (and occasional application of a styptic pencil on cuts.)
Just watching you cheers a man up. Purchased some Astra blades to try (only just started shaving with a D.E, 27 years old, bought a Wilkinson Sword D.E for £10)
For anyone else that's curious, the wax used to keep paper on the blades can be spread onto the blade itself. I tried this and I've seen zero corrosion after nearly a dozen shaves compared to seeing little rust spots after only a couple.
Haha me too! I didn’t expect Wilkinson Sword to become my favorite, but after shaving with them I just love the smoothness and the control and feel. It’s my perfect shave.
Thanks for the video geo. My skin is quite sensitive, along with very coarse whiskers. Great combination. I am finding the DERBY EXTRA, along with the ASTRA superior platinum do the job. Thanks again for your list. I like we have sample packs.
I like Feather blades pretty good, but my favorite blades will always be Tiger Platinum. They're easy on the skin but cut through every hair like butter.
As someone with a Bsc in HR Management and Master's in International Management. ISO 9001 is merely a norm for certification of quality management systems. It is very easy to get the certefication without actually following the norms in practice, just by having documented evidence of following the norm ;) and it has more to do with the quality of management systems rather than quality of the product. Of course having good quality management systems should also help improve quality of products/services but it doesn't really have a strong corelation (specially in those cases where they just want the certificate). Great content! Thanks :)
I learned to de shave with a Wilkinson sword classic. I always keep some around. My local chemist sells 5 packs for 75pence! I recently started using feather and yesterday tried Astra. These are my favourites right now. But I'm going to keep trying about.
I have very sensitive skin, and was using Merkur blades, but I think they were too sharp for me and caused irritation! I tried Derby but still had some irritation. Someone recommended Wilkinson and I’ve had zero irritation since! Glad to see all 3 on this list, but I think Wilkinson are my personal favourite!
Great video. My top 3 are Astra Platinum, Feather then (controversially) Derby Premium. Astra are my favourite. Everyone has their preferences, stubble and skin type. But my personal view is Astra feel the sharpest out of the pack, for the first 2 shaves. Closely followed by Feather which are also damn sharp. The Feather steel feels harder/ tougher though. So 4/ 5 shaves in it does not seem to dull as much (Astra loses in this category). It is a draw probably on this basis between Astra and Feather. Derby greens are kind on skin/ good for newbs, but find pull a little bit on stubble. Derby Premium are still skin kind, but you don't get the pulling on the stubble. Meaning they win an honourable 3rd place. I thought I would bore you all with my choice and rationale😁 Great video Geo👍
Do you find that the feather blades cut through thick stubble with no pull at all? I'm kinda new to de shaving and have only used Gillette and derby blades but they just seem to get hung up no matter how careful I am.
@@pierce5808 Hi Jim Either Feather or Astra should handle thick stubble. Both blades are seriously sharp, I mean super sharp. Recommend you trying a pre shave such as Proraso pre shaving creme. Apply that to a wet face to soften up the stubble and help protect your skin. Then lather up and apply the shave soap on top. 4 passes in different directions should see you right.👍
Biggest surprise for me was how popular the voskhod blades are. I have been using them for three years and didn't realise they were a big seller. They work well for me. No cuts or nicks and still sharp enough. Can't use derbys they are just not sharp enough. Haven't tried feather yet.
I'm currently clean-shaven, but I do grow my beard frequently. You can always make a habit of shaving the tops of your cheeks and your neck. Gotta keep the beard shaped up nicely, otherwise it risks the wolf-man beard look, which is much less attractive!
@@dorkthrone I recently started going clean shaving. Just got tired of messing with my mustache after shaving. I'm a little too anal with trying to get it perfect.
I keep a small supply of Feathers when I want to take my time and do things really properly. They don't do so well as a daily-driver in my opinion, because they're so sharp they don't tolerate any rush or sloppiness. It'll seem like you did okay, no pain or anything, and then 5 minutes later you need a blood transfusion. You could butcher a cow with a Feather and the cow wouldn't even notice. I like Derby and Dorco red as a daily; they're forgiving. Astra used to be my favorite, but when they changed to the new style (label etched rather than printed) they became total chainsaws.
Thank you for your informative video, Have a question regarding Derby blades, Whats the difference between the Derby Green and Black? I'm using Derby black and they provide a nice smooth clean shave for me.
Hey Geofatboy, how are you doing? I don't know if you know this but for the Gillette Nacet, there is a crocodile on the front because the blade used to be called "Crocodile Nacet." The slogan was that the blades were so sharp they could cut through the crocs hide, which explains the cool graphic. Once i started using them, I stopped feeling tugging and pulling, even with my hair being very coarse.
I'm Great, Thanks! Thank you for this. It's the first really reasonable and believable explanation for NACET that I've heard. How do you know this and how long ago did they switch the name to plain old Nacet?
I feel like it matters a lot which blade you are used to shaving with. I started out with the Personna blades and I've gotten very experienced with using that particular blade. Whenever I try something new I just end up with a worse shave since Im using a blade Im not used to.
I second the shock for not one mention for Polsilver, I've tried all of the blades on the list and none can hold a candle to Polsilver. My top blades: Polsilver, 7 o' clock green, permasharp, nacet, gsb blues, personna blues, astra blues, derby premium and dorco prime platinum
Took me a while to work up enough courage to go from the Derby blades that came with my first safety razor, to the Feather blades, however I am glad I did. Thanks geofatboy. (:

Thanks for sharing. The blades from you list that work best for me are Astra SP and Derby Extra. Others I really like are Gillette 7 O'clock Super Stainless, Dorco Prime Platinum, Gillette London Bridge, Personna Lab Blue. I still have a lot more with me that I've not tried out yet. So the list may change. I'm just enjoying the journey.
@@geofatboy Hi Geo. Sent you a PM on Facebook. I'm happy to send you some Gillette London Bridge blades to try out. These are really excellent blades. I've tried over 40 blades and this one is up there with the best.
Everyone's face/skin is different so I find its just a case of what blade works best for you. I find that some blade and razor combinations work really well. My 3one6 razor and Supershave X blade is a fantastic shave for me. Yet I put that blade in my Feather AS-D2 and as the razor is mild the blade is not nearly so good. I also like Nacet blades in my Outlaw and Braveheart razors. Dave.
@@greg6162 Hi Greg, I don't find the 3one6 particularly smooth. I haven't tried a voskhod in it yet, are they smooth in it? I quite like Voskhod blades. Dave.
The blades that work best for me are Feather, 2nd Gillette 7 o’clock sharp,3rd Wilkinson sword. I think that the worst value for money is the Merkur blades, I find that they are far too scratchy and not as sharp as the blades that I have mentioned above. Great video Geo. 👍
I have recently had the chance to try TREET blades from Pakistan. They come in a hard paper box and each blade is nicely double-wrapped (the double-wrapping can be used to safely dispose of a blade). They are plain carbon steel, so they are not very sharp and dont get extremely close on each pass. Also the mileage on them is rather low at max. 3 shaves. But they are INCREDIBLY smooth and mild. You can literally do 5-6 passes and you would never know, thus negating their relative lack of sharpness and needing to do more passes. In comparison, a DERBY EXTRA, which I find to be pretty mild as well, is a butchering knife. I imagine these TREET blades are an excellent choice for beginners, people who absolutely need a mild shave, or for people who are keen to try as many blades as possible :)
@@ThaRedPitbull yellows are sharp and smooth, always a comfortable and close shave. No reason to try anymore(tried about 6 or 7 blades). As always YMMV.
I bought a sample pack and just tried Voskhod, the first shave was extremely good, one of the best I had. However, the second was terrible, it has done the job but with nicks. I hope the others like Rapira Platinum Lux, Personna and co will be better. Astra greeen lasted for me about 3-5 shaves
Happy I found this vid! I’ve used Astra SP for about a year and a half. I agree that for the price point, they give outstanding shaves. But lately, I feel like they’ve been a bit inconsistent. Going to try and change it up with some Personna Lab Blues; ought to do the trick!
@@geofatboy in retrospect, it could also be that my safety razor had too heavy a handle and was far too aggressive for my face; going to cross reference with a good old 34c! 😉 Stay frosty, Geo! Cheers!
Hey Geo, How would you rank these 10 blades based on their sharpness? Kinda curious. Thanks for all your videos and help in helping everyone get a better shave on! Alex.
Cant disagree. Astra for the price/performance ratio. Feather works great in my tame razors. I really liked the Kai's. I have a spreadsheet for all the blades I've tried. A lot have been discontinued or re branded. Swedish gillettes made in poland and the original polsilver. All good blades.
I've only tried three DE razor blades to this point . Astra sp 1° place , dorco prime 2°, feather 3° ... I am locking to try next all the Gillette , voskhod , personna platinum and kai . I just use shavette and medium sharpness blades are the best for me .
@@geofatboy what do you think of Van Der Hagen blades? A box of 5 came with the safety razor I got and I've cut my neck up bad both times using them. I'm following a warm/hot water on the face & neck, Cremo shave cream, safety razor process going with the grain and even that first pass is cutting my neck up. Is there such a thing as sensitive skin made razor blades? Thanks in advance
@@nickrekietalaw2107 I have sensitive skin as well. The trick i learned is memorize the direction of your hair growth. Very lite pressure (the weight of the razor) is all you need. Slow short strokes. Take your time and love your shave. Pre shave oil is a must. Hope this helps.😎👍🏻
Something has changed with astra in recent years. Just about every other blade I open is pulling hair right out of the paper. I’ve tried multiple handles to see if that was the issue but with multiple different handles and angles, it pulls the same. I found some old astra blades at my parents house dorm when I still lived at home more than a decade ago and those razors were all very smooth and I could get 5 shaves before I felt any pulling and could get 3-5 more shaves after that before it pulled uncomfortably. But with new astra blades, they will start to pull after one full shave when I manage to actually find one that’s smooth. So I’m curious if anyone else here who has been shaving with safety razors for many years has noticed this too.
I know that anything that is machined and manufactured in quantity they roll off in batches and every now and then the machines lose calibration and you get a few bad batches, but still meet tolerances and are shipped out. I say this because it is difficult to disregard so many positive reviews and years of satisfied users. They are not my blade of choice (too aggressive), but I have used them and found them to be very consistent in sharpness and in length of usability. If you have any left from the 50 or 100 count you may have purchased, then you should take what remains and ask for replacements. I hope this helps.
Thanks for another interesting and helpful video. I wonder if you would consider doing a video on this list and indicate in sequential order from least aggressive to most aggressive, or vice versa. Thanks.
I get 2 three pass shaves out of a feather platinum, a third shave will drag my face and cause irritation from repeated passes. What do you think I try to either get more shaves or 2 shaves for less money per blade? Even if I don’t find a better blade it still works out to $.25 per shave, way better (and more satisfying)than a cartridge.
I know the accepted wisdom is that Feather are the sharpest blade, and this may be true; however, I find that after 4 or 5 shaves the blade needs replacing. Wilkinson Sword on the other hand is no less sharp, but the blade lasts 10 + shaves. If you haven't tried a Wilkinson Sword blade yet I would give them a go.
Yeah that’s why with a Feather I just do two shaves and then put a new one in Personna is longer lasting but still in my opinion doesn’t shave as close as the Feather it’s close between the two but Feather still has the edge over Personna as far as being more comfortable Personna wins
I started out with Feathers but I literally can’t get through a shave without cutting myself lol. Too sharp for me. I switched to the Astra blades and they’ve been fantastic.
The nacet are on par with feather. Except the 2nd shave is much closer due to the coating coming off. I disagree with number 5 pick. Merkur blade sample pack came with my 34c and it was dull out of package.
Recently tried Astra greens after using Feather, Kai, Persona Red and Persona Blue. Astras lasted longer than all of them, provided a real close and comfortable shave, and were the least expensive. For me, a true no-brainer.

Hi Geo. A couple of days ago I used a Voskhod blade (first time using it) with a Parker variant razor. I started mid range on the blade exposure and went up - I know most people go down but I have found going up gives me a closer shave, not BBS but closer. The following day, my face was rather irritated. I have using a safety razor for 20+ years but only used 1 razor and 1 blade. What is you advice on using an efficient blade with and efficient razor? I cannot figure out how to go back up on TH-cam comment page but I meant Parker Semi-Slant.
I use Fetaher but my god, Astras are so smooth and sharp. I have NO burn, and unlike Feathers, the first shave of the blade is not too sharp - it’s the best shave. I’d say 4 shaves from a blade. Astra gives zero bumps and it’s hard to make a mistake, but I imagine it can cut badly.
I found that Persona Red and Wilkinson are serviceable, but require several passes-----Good for you with sensitive skin and/or light beards------Wilkinsons have a used blade receptacle in the back, which is a good feature----Persona Blue and Feather are equal---They deliver a smooth quick shave and a smooth face afterwards in half the time of Wilkinson & Persona Red-----Feather, like Wilkinson, have a used blade bank in the dispenser--------Just my two cents and as you mentioned,YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY.
Question. When do you know till you have ti change the blade? I don't grow much facial hair but I have to be clean shaven for my job and I'm still new to safety razors

Cheers mate. Now l will have to try Derby. You never stop learning with the shaving game.😀?
I got a sample pack a few days ago, as I am new to safety razor shaving, I just tried the Derby extra blade which was a nice blade. It was on a 2 day stubble.
🙀 thanks guys
i m surprised to see that Bic Chrome and Perma Sharp didn't make it to the top 10 they are very nice blades...ωραίος Γιώργαρε! nice video!
Maybe next year!
No surprise to me that Feathers are number one, I am surprised Nacets aren’t higher on the list.
Take what you will, but I think the people that ranked the list don't really like sharp blades, or maybe all the sharp lovers flock to feather. I think nacet is sharper than all the other blades on this list except for feather.
I have heard nothing but good things about the Nacets. I'm looking forward to trying them.
As I said-YMMV
Dave.
Yeah I quite enjoy Nacet as well, that's my "go to" blade
Very helpful. With all the choices, it gets bewildering. I've tried several, and so far I think the Wilkinson blades work best for me.
Thanks Bob!
Thanks for sharing. I'm not a fan of shower-shaving. I prefer to stand in front of the mirror and take in the whole process!
Just watching you cheers a man up. Purchased some Astra blades to try (only just started shaving with a D.E, 27 years old, bought a Wilkinson Sword D.E for £10)
Thanks Alan! Always gotta be upbeat! I feel its better to spread the sunshine.
@@geofatboy Winter is approaching in Glasgow, Scotland so I'll be extra cold with the menthol balm! Keep up the good work Geo!
For anyone else that's curious, the wax used to keep paper on the blades can be spread onto the blade itself. I tried this and I've seen zero corrosion after nearly a dozen shaves compared to seeing little rust spots after only a couple.
Only one I use not listed is Pol-Silver blades... thanks for posting this video!
Great blade!

Wilkinson Sword are my current favorite blades. Over the years my choices have changed by how my face felt after the shave.
Haha me too! I didn’t expect Wilkinson Sword to become my favorite, but after shaving with them I just love the smoothness and the control and feel. It’s my perfect shave.
yes! they work in everything. it's true what they say: It's not the razor, it's the blade.
Thanks for the video geo. My skin is quite sensitive, along with very coarse whiskers. Great combination. I am finding the DERBY EXTRA, along with the ASTRA superior platinum do the job. Thanks again for your list. I like we have sample packs.
Thanks for the request Peter!
So where's the car?
I like Feather blades pretty good, but my favorite blades will always be Tiger Platinum. They're easy on the skin but cut through every hair like butter.
I gotta try those. Thanks for the rec!
Doroco is surprisingly good. Switched to them from Astra and they’re quite a bit sharper and keep an edge longer.
Thanks :)
Interesting-thanks for sharing.
I learned to de shave with a Wilkinson sword classic. I always keep some around. My local chemist sells 5 packs for 75pence! I recently started using feather and yesterday tried Astra. These are my favourites right now. But I'm going to keep trying about.
Thanks for the video I purchased the Derby blades and they work a lot better than the blades I use normally.
Me too! Wilkinson Sword gang represent!
4 passes in different directions should see you right.👍
@@alamore5084 nice, thanks man 👍

I'm surprised persona blue label didn't make the list but the feather blades are my go to.
Biggest surprise for me was how popular the voskhod blades are. I have been using them for three years and didn't realise they were a big seller. They work well for me. No cuts or nicks and still sharp enough. Can't use derbys they are just not sharp enough. Haven't tried feather yet.
Voskhod=The pride of Moscow!
Great video Geo. You almost make me want to get rid of my beard so that I can enjoy using these blades again!
I wish I could grow a nice beard.
Oh-The Temptation...
Derby is my favorite at this point, but Personna and Astra are close seconds. I haven't tried Feather yet.
You gotta work your way up to the Feathers
I keep a small supply of Feathers when I want to take my time and do things really properly. They don't do so well as a daily-driver in my opinion, because they're so sharp they don't tolerate any rush or sloppiness. It'll seem like you did okay, no pain or anything, and then 5 minutes later you need a blood transfusion. You could butcher a cow with a Feather and the cow wouldn't even notice. I like Derby and Dorco red as a daily; they're forgiving. Astra used to be my favorite, but when they changed to the new style (label etched rather than printed) they became total chainsaws.

My personal favorite blades are the bolzano superinox blades very underrated. They give a really nice shave
My top blades:
Polsilver, 7 o' clock green, permasharp, nacet, gsb blues, personna blues, astra blues, derby premium and dorco prime platinum
True-Polsilver is a great blade!
Took me a while to work up enough courage to go from the Derby blades that came with my first safety razor, to the Feather blades, however I am glad I did. Thanks geofatboy. (:

My most favourite choice of blade is the Perma-Sharp. Smooth & sharp, great blade, also made by the P&G Gillette group.
Also a nice blade...
Dave.
I love Voshkod’s in my 3one6
@@greg6162 Hi Greg, I don't find the 3one6 particularly smooth. I haven't tried a voskhod in it yet, are they smooth in it? I quite like Voskhod blades.
Dave.
The blades that work best for me are Feather, 2nd Gillette 7 o’clock sharp,3rd Wilkinson sword. I think that the worst value for money is the Merkur blades, I find that they are far too scratchy and not as sharp as the blades that I have mentioned above. Great video Geo. 👍
Interesting-I can relate Vig-I hated Merkur blades for a long time, then recently I tried them again and I got quite a nice shave from them!
Beginners-read this and give it a try! shavenation.com/collections/treet

Thanks for sharing! I hope they aren't messing with the formula again!
@@geofatboy in retrospect, it could also be that my safety razor had too heavy a handle and was far too aggressive for my face; going to cross reference with a good old 34c! 😉

Hey Geo,
How would you rank these 10 blades based on their sharpness? Kinda curious.

Thanks for sharing your DE blade experience.

After trials and tribulations my favorite combo is Merkur 34c + Wilkinson Sword Classic Blade
Nice setup!
I have shark blades for my straight razor and it seams like every one out of two I pick are sharp
Try a different brand
Anyone? Anyone? Ferris?
I know that anything that is machined and manufactured in quantity they roll off in batches and every now and then the machines lose calibration and you get a few bad batches, but still meet tolerances and are shipped out.
I say this because it is difficult to disregard so many positive reviews and years of satisfied users. They are not my blade of choice (too aggressive), but I have used them and found them to be very consistent in sharpness and in length of usability.
If you have any left from the 50 or 100 count you may have purchased, then you should take what remains and ask for replacements. I hope this helps.
thanks for the video geo

Well i know what I'm getting next 😌
Thanks for another interesting and helpful video. I wonder if you would consider doing a video on this list and indicate in sequential order from least aggressive to most aggressive, or vice versa. Thanks.
I get 2 three pass shaves out of a feather platinum, a third shave will drag my face and cause irritation from repeated passes. What do you think I try to either get more shaves or 2 shaves for less money per blade? Even if I don’t find a better blade it still works out to $.25 per shave, way better (and more satisfying)than a cartridge.
Don't think you will find a better blade than the Feather...
I am new to wet shaving. Is it matter which side of the blade faces upward when place it into the razor?
No difference. Watch this to learn more: shavenation.com/collections/de-razor-blades
Feathers all the way, no close second
Hell yeah

As Geofatboy mentioned, these are not his reviews but entirely based on sales figures from Shave Nation
Good info-Thanks for sharing!

Feather blades are sharper!
Question. When do you know till you have ti change the blade? I don't grow much facial hair but I have to be clean shaven for my job and I'm still new to safety razors
i found when I used the feathers they were WAY too aggressive (very sensitive skin here) and no matter how careful i was I got a nick or two every time. Derby Extra are really the only ones my skin agrees with and still working on the original 100 pack i bought god knows how long ago.
