Fun fact: After Brandon Lee’s death, Natalie Portman’s parents put her in gun training so she knew how to check the guns she would use for the scenes she would be in, in preparation for this role.

I remember it clearly, i was 11 years old in 1993 and had just moved to NC. It was big news all over NC, and i was a huge fan of the Bruce Lee; thus also Brandon. I believe they were firing blanks but a squib load got ejected that killed Brandon. I believe the guns used for the scene was previously used for live firing, huge mistake. Movie prop guns should never be mixed with live firing guns.

This is actually a fantastic movie, although I had forgotten about the part where Matilda developed an infatuation with Leon. Some of those scenes are DEEPLY uncomfortable, even though it's clear that she's just playing with the idea of adult feelings rather than actually experiencing them, but because Leon is very awkward socially it makes it difficult to get a read on him. He is a guy who calmly murders people for a living, after all, and I remember being extremely tense during those scenes afraid that he would accept her advances or otherwise do something that would scar her. I mean, he does teach her to be an assassin lol so you could argue that he does scar her, but that damage was kind of already done to her by her family and their murder, and always felt more like empowerment for her than psychological damage. Really, really good movie.

    • @Theeight8b

it would be interesting for you to look up what the marriage or betrothal age was for young women where Leon grew up in Italy at the time that the movie was made. And, whether the world likes it or not, younger people can love, although there are very sound reasons why the age of consent is what it is and perhaps might best be even higher.

I think the forgiving interpretation would be that he was treating her like a daughter, but I feel it's also worth mentioning that until not as long ago as you might think it wasn't uncommon for 13 or 14 year old girls to become engaged, and that was true even here in the states. One of my dad's military buddies that he served with in the 60's married his wife when she was 12, something that would land you in the news today in a bad way but was relatively tolerated back then, at least in some parts of the country.

The amount of people in the comments questioning why Matilda is in love with Leon is one of the most FRUSTRATING things I have ever seen.
They basically admit to not paying attention to the film or never seeing the full thing. People are pretending young girls don't have crushes on older men all the time whether they're celebrities or someone they look up to a lot.
Leon was the only person Matilda had in her life after her family was gunned down, she was bullied as well.
Finally, Leon did not share her feelings, HE ALMOST KILLED HER IN THE BEGINNING OF THE FILM.
Stop pretending like this is a huge deal that ruins this film, because its not. If you want to bitch and moan about a weird fucking movie go do it on Girl in the Basement, not on Leon: The Professional.

People always talk about this film like it's some pedophile wet dream. But you gotta remember when she dresses up, she's just playing around and being a kid. And as someone who has never had a dad, little girls will attach themselves to any older man who treats them kindly. It's the adult who needs to say no, and Leon does. Leon isn't looking at her like that, why are you?

There's something about seeing a little girl picking up a gun and just firing randomly out the window in a city block, that pulls you in. Natalie plays that part so well, of a girl who has nothing more to loose. It's very impressive how mature she creates this Matilda character to be, which is why I like this movie so much. Simply the best child acting in a movie I've seen.

People gets tripped up on the fact she fell in love with him. That's not the point. He didn't take advantage of her but instead took care of her. She sees him as the only man she can trust and be vulnerable around. He sees her as the daughter he never had, that why he was ready to give everything for her, even his own life.
Her love for him is refuge and trust. His love for her is empathy and compassion.

A truly unforgettable masterpiece, and a touching film. With such a perfect cast of the Underrated Jean Reno, Natalie Portman, Gary Oldman, and so many others, it literally created a film that was perfect with such a strong emotional, action-packed storyline and what a soundtrack. Honestly, one of the very few films, that you can truly say has no flaws, and one that everyone can agree is perfect. Jean Reno truly nailed the performance, and it's amazing to see how underrated he is, and Natalie had such great talent, also nailing the role, and the film is literally indescribable, just a masterpiece. Luc Besson as a director, Literally proved that you don't need such a budget to accomplish these things, and what an era it is, and what a big name for European Films, in comparison with Americans that need such a big budget to accomplish the effects, in my opinion. Just a masterpiece, see it for yourself, with no regrets at all. A film, that I will never forget, and truly won't ever get its ultimate full credit for. Legendary.
