In those days ODI centuries were pretty few and far between. Especially when you are batting at 6th position it’s pretty rare to even score once in 100 matches. Steve Waugh who played 325 odi matches has only scored 3 centuries in his entire odi career.
He got his first ODI hundred in his 79th game and started opening the batting only in 1994. When you consider that he started in 1989,, that's good 5 years wasted in the middle orders. Had he been opening earlier,, could easily have had 8 to 10 more hundreds to his kitty.

I was there. The young people nowadays don’t know what Tendulkar was in the 90s. We would have holidays cause he was batting. Movie shooting would stop. Whenever there was a match with India the first question would be “how many has tendulkar made till now?” And if he gets out it would mean India would lose. He really was a one man army. The cricketers now have fame because of ads and social media etc and ofcourse they are excellent batsman as well. But no one can even match to what Tendulkar was in those days, the hope the entire country had on him in every game. I mean now Rohit sharma gets out we got Virat. Virat gets out we got others. Those days there was no one. Tendulkar was the first line of offense and the last line of defence. Tendulkar was the weapon, the wall and the army all together. When he retired I stopped following cricket.
Sachin Tendulkar… With the name what comes to your mind first. Most of us would agree even the name and surname “Sachin”/ “Tendulkar” used alone would first make you think about what ? CRICKET… Why does this happen? To me this is the question people ask. Sachin started his career in 1989 and a 16 year old 5ft 5inch, guy was acing the likes of Wasim Akram and Imran Khan, two of the best bowlers in the international cricketing history. He took up cricket when he was 11 years old. Well, just think where were u when u were 11. Forget about career I dint even know how to tie my shoe laces When I was 11. His records don't make him The Sachin Tendulkar, the world knows him for. He had been the era of Indian Cricket, I still remember the times when India would lose their wicket in Sachin we would go and play. TVs were shut when he got out. He was 1 man in 11 players who we knew if there at the crease is enough. Everyone knew he uses a 2.5Kgs heavy bat. Guys used to buy heavy bats in the event of trying to be like him. Copying his shots, stance, body language, cuts, drives, leg flicks, sweeps and the best sixes in the “V”. Well nobody wrote this legend. He made one by being the spirit we needed, Indians. Sharjah was one impact. I still remember the tone of Tony Greg” One and Inly Indian to make it to Wisden cricketer’s world XI. A character of class, humility and sheer sportsman spirit. He taught us a lot of things besides cricket. Why not be a captain? Why not cheat? How to be 1 man army for the Team or family. He is a piece of class in what he did for his entire career. Play like him would say. So many runs, 100s, so many wickets so many catches, so many loses and yet only 1 factor for a period of 12-15 years for your country. He is the man "The God of Cricket” if it's a religion. So many followers, and respect. I could just go on, he is not considered a legend. He Is The LEGEND…

Earlier during my childhood, cricket was more for entertainment and of course seeing Sachin score runs and win matches for India was a thing of pride. But now after years, I'm realizing he was such a phenomenal player with so much grace. It takes a genius of his calibre to score over 100 100s (with an average close to 50), 30,000 international runs and most number of Man of the Match awards. The commentary I used to here as a kid from Tony Grieg, Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, Ian Botham about him all makes so much sense now. They used to call him "Little Master" for a reason and every shot he plays is a manifestation of that. Great Timing, Magnificent Placement, a stalwart of the game in every sense. If God came down to earth and played cricket, That is how it would look. So lucky to have SACHIN as my childhood hero and role-model!
