I made a $25 donation to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence on account of my effed up sense of humor and planned to ask you all to do the same BEFORE I found out that NCADV is super anti-gun. I looked into the National Domestic Violence Hotline instead and...same thing. Anti-gun. So forget it I guess.

The rock-in style mags, and the fact that I can't spend less than $30 on a mini mag cause only factory mags seem to feed in mine are my only real complaints. Otherwise, great guns, super fuckin thicc overengineered. Pretty accurate, however factory aperture is 100% shite tho.

all of the m1 style stuff has such a touchy recoil/gas system.
i can understand the hesitation, one tiny contact point on the op-rod and boom, you're accuracy is 100% gone until you work out every tiny kink. hell just the lock up in the front of the gas cylinder from the stock tweaking it an unseen amount screws everything up.
that being said, when these things are tuned up they'll sing, but if you're lucky enough to drop in parts and have zero repercussions go buy a power ball ticket.

  • @johnshields9110

Before the Ranch Rifle version, the 1-80 series, you had to use a side mount for a scope, just like the original Army M14. I scoped two of the Mini 14's 40 years ago for my older brother, and one for my ground hog hunting buddy. I had to add some thin brass shims to get the mounts perfected. However, both of these where nearly 1 MOA rifles. In shooting the Mini 14, you have to be really careful with not letting the curved stock back move vertically on your shoulder, while correcting any hand hold on the stock near the trigger. Torque the screws to spec, and find a load the rifle likes. With one of the rifles I could put 5 shots in a quarter a 100 yards. The other, my buddies, I killed a crow at 560 yards -- which he never lived down to his dying day. My brother kept his till going into his second Rest Home, whereas I purchased it; hoped to be shooting it soon. They are marvelous truck guns, plus my buddies got left on top of a truck and was flung onto a set of rail road tracks when we crossed them. We feared the worse, but except for a few scratches, it didn't even loose zero.
My buddy as mentioned had a later model Ranch Rifle stainless version, mounted in a black synthetic stock. It did not shoot very well and was more of a 3 MOA gun. I never got to give it the full varminting make over, but I'm faithfully reporting on real rifles. Women shooter preferred shooting the Mini 14 versus the AR 15, if anyone cares to know.

1000% agree! Love the Ultimak. absolutely worth it! I have one on my Mini with a Holosun 503 GU. It is way smaller and lighter than that Eotech and it has that "Circle Of Death" reticle as well. I can ring steel out to 250 yards at will with it.
Get a trigger job done as well from Accuracy Systems. Huge improvement! 3.5 lbs crisp and clean. $80.
Mini's are way over gassed from the factory. A gas bushing set from Accuracy Systems for $30 will get you a rifle that ejects the empty shells about 10ft, instead of a mile and is way less violent. Major accuracy improvement there.
A true Shot Barrel Stabilizer will help improve accuracy as well for $59. They look super cool too!
A Choate stock fits much tighter than the factory stock and in turn improves accuracy.
A Specter Gear 2 point sling is the only way to go in my opinion.
I get it though. The Mini is anything but the cheapest route to go. If you are looking for the best bang for your buck get an AR.
    I still prefer the Mini.

I used separate rings to mount an LPVO and it has worked very well. Unfortunately, my Mini shot 6-8MOA out of the box, despite being one of the newer ones. I added an aftermarket barrel stabilizer and now I'm consistently getting sub 2MOA with run of the mill m193 ball.

Hey, it only has to be accurate enough to take big game in case you need food or hit center mass on a person for self defense.
That's it. It doesn't have to be a tac driver at 600 yards its not meant to be. If that's what your looking for buy a precision rifle.
I made 2 essential upgrades to mine. The first upgrade is an Accuracy Systems extended firing pin for $70. It fires every kind of ammo now, including the steel cased stuff. It is an easy and cheap upgrade that makes this rifle a workhorse. The 2nd upgrade I made was a lighter sear spring by MCarbo for $12.95. Then I polished the trigger sear and hammer sear with a polishing stone. My trigger is about 4lbs. Smooth.

I bought a Mini-14 Ranch rifle back in the early 90's. I mounted a scope on it and tried sighting in at 50 yards. The thing was shooting all over the place. Checked to make sure I had everything tight and cleaned the barrel. It still shot about a 3" group at 50 yards. I've been reluctant to give them a second chance.

    • @junkyardwillie8320
      @junkyardwillie8320 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Maybe you’ve heard this before, but it really is true. I think it was around 15 years ago they started making some changes to the structure of the barrel. Got rid of that old pencil type and put in a thicker, heavier tapered barrel that greatly helps with accuracy. Trust me, speaking from personal experience. I don’t know if I would exactly call them tackdrivers, it may not be as great as an AR, but it’s still Damn good, especially compared to what you bought a few decades ago. I would suggest giving it another try, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. I don’t personally own one, I never have, but I’ve shot them on many occasions. I’ve been putting off picking one up for a while now, and after seeing that folding stock, I think I might just go pick up a stainless mini, pay the couple hundred bucks for the stock, wait forever to get it since demand is so high and then go out and have some fun

My Mini 14 is a 581+ Ranch Tactical (Scored at a pawn and gun shop for $550 with box and 2 factory 20 rounders in May of 2020) with the 16 inch barrel, an Archangel Sparta chassis, Leatherwood Hi-Lux 1-4x24 LPVO, Magpul flip up BUIS, bolted on rail with a foregrip and a Cogburn Arsenal Trigger Finger Mag Release. This thing kicks an AR's ass in my humble opinion. I can use pretty much any dirt cheap brand of mags I want with 0 issues, despite a great many people saying theirs run horribly with anything but factory Ruger mags. I missed out on the Tapco Gen 2s, but I bought 10 Thermolds (3 triple packs and a single) from Sportsman's Guide and they run flawlessly. Same with Promag polymer and Promag steel mags. Even found one from Ram-Line, of all companies still in the package at a local sporting goods store. Its a hybrid mag for both the Mini 14 and AR-15 and its great too.

James - Love the videos. Before I bought my mini-14, I saw a lot of videos of folks struggling to remove magazines. I even recall you struggling in the another video. I spent a few minutes at the bench figuring out what was happening and it's pretty simple. When the mag release is pressed and held, the magazine will swing and then fall out under its own weight. When I was having trouble it was from not holding the lever long enough for these two things to happen. Because an AR mag falls straight out, it doesn't matter how briefly you hold the release lever. On a mini, what's needed is to hold the lever an instant longer and the mag falls out just like on an AR. What I'm seeing in the videos is folks only holding the lever long enough for the mag to swing, but not fall. Then they release the lever early and fight with the mag.

I put it in a Choate folding stock and sometimes had a flashlight electrical taped to the forearm just like bill Murray in Caddy shack.
The funny part is that I was left eye dominant and I fixed that problem by wearing a eye patch while shooting and hunting made from a squirrel hide that I tanned with Alum. I left the face and whiskers and hair on so it looked like a crazy mountain man eye patch.
I know alot of tactical elitists will bag on the Mini and now that I'm older and have a respectable collection , I still have so many fond memories of raising hell on my dirt bike with my Mini 14 as a kid.

I have a 34 year old Mini 14 ranch. You missed the best replacement accurizing part. Wolff springs extra power action spring. Pretty much eliminates the action slap. The pencil barrel shoots 300 yards as good as some ARs. P.S. the factory iron sights are about worthless.

I have Warne QD rings, Burris 2-7 scope, an accu-strut, and had the barrel shortened to 17" and a smaller gas port installed. Was told that's the optimal length and size. Using Federal 50gr varmint tip 223, I can shoot 1" groups at 100 yards. My gun is sitting right at $1,200 now, but totally worth it!

Aero mount rides too high on a mini. Switch over to some narrow rings (eg Warne) to get that LPVO closer to the bore and fix cheekweld. BTW If you’re really into the mini send one out to Carl at Accuracy Systems. He builds world class mini 14’s.

    • @slowpokebr549
      @slowpokebr549 4 ปีที่แล้ว

With the folder, the high mount works for me. I can't get a cheek weld anyway. The heads up stance lines the scope up nicely.

Amen to the accuracy issues with the early ones. I have a 180-XXX serial number rifle. It holds roughly a minute of barn door at 100 yds. By the second generation Ruger had taken care of that, and figured out optics were a thing.

I have had my Ruger MIni-30 since 1994 and I LOVE IT! The best Accuracy that I have ever gotten out if has been from from a Special Hand-loaded .308 Projectile 147gr FMJBT using Winchester 748 Powder and Winchester Brass that was giving me an average of 1.25 inch groups and my very best group was a .50 inch group with 5 shoots from 100 yards. The Altimax is a GREAT addition to the Mini I put one on mine back in 2012 along with an Aimpoint PRO and that was Awesome setup till I Switched to a Holosun HS503GU that has the Low mount and both the 65 MOA Circle and the 2 MOA Dot and that is my current Rig. I am thinking about getting one of the Stainless Steel Mini-30 Tactical and get the Samson ATM Stock and Setup in a Quasi Retro Tactical Carbine.

Another good upgrade is the accu-strut barrel strut/stabilizer, gives the mini better accuracy and that classic M1A look.
Also, an amega rail/scout mount does the same thing as the ultiMAK at around the same price and gives you a little bit more variability in your sight radius. Just my two cents! Great vid Jimbo.

I recently received, after many months of back order (but I am not complaining) a Sampson Mini-14 folding stock for my 195 series, stainless steel Ranch Rifle. Fits great, after a little fumbling; additionally, I agree the the butt plate release is very stiff. Finally got my A-Team rifle without spending an exorbitant amount of money. Looks and feels great.

I used to love my Mini 14. I have had 4 of them over the years. When my son was in High School, I bought him an AR 15. Because I wanted magazine commonality, I decided to sell the mini and get an AR. The mags are cheap and everywhere. Just in case we were being overrun by zombies, I wanted to be able to yell, hey, throw me a mag & keep on wasting em. Enjoy your work.
