- This video shows the history of the London Underground(and other TfL services) drawn on the geographically accurate map beginning with the opening of the Metropolitan Railway in 1863 to TfL Rail's extension to Reading in 2019. Lines and the station names are based on their current names.

It's crazy this is what it really looks like without the lines being straightened out on the typical map
The tube map makes certain stations seem much farther apart than they are, so much so that walking can be much quicker.
I have an old 'District Railway' map from ~1908 that shows the line as it actually runs, rather than the stylized modern tube map.

I was born in 1975. I always thought that the majority of the underground had been built before the world wars. Surprised that the Victoria line was only about a decade old when I first went on the underground in the 80s!

The majority was built before the World Wars... Its only the extension to the central line, Victoria and Jubilee that were built afterwards, but they had been in planning before / during WW2

As I understand it, they were trying to get to Birmingham, and the initial plan for the Brill branch was to upgrade and extend to Oxford
@@adonaiyah2196 The Met back in the XIX century liked to style tiself as a national mainline railway, rather than a "simple" suburban or (ironically for the name) a "mere" metro. It actually offered significant oppotition to the plan of integrating all the different Underground services in a single company in the beginning of the XX century.
Coming from Uxbridge (West London), one of the classic phrases I remember from my childhood is "This is a Metropolitan line train to Aldgate."
I miss taking the underground. I remember we used to take it on so many school trips. It was a good opportunity to make new friends as there were often other classes/forms going with us too. Some people just chilled and listened to music while others really couldn't keep their mouths shut at all. I miss the good old days. Unfortunately, I had to leave the country 3 years ago but if I could come back home, I would. I miss you, London. Thank you for all the great memories ♥️♥️

As an american this video blows my mind. I've literally only used the nearest cities metro a couple of times. Each of those times it was more of a novelty as well, because I drove to a station then drove back home.
What blows my mind is the fact the first line on the underground was built while the American civil war was going on across the pond

I actually shed some tears when it got to the 2010s. I grew up in Uxbridge during the 2010s and I was forced to leave the country because of family reasons 3 years ago. This underground system is my childhood.

As I get older and more cynical and tired, I can still remember my first trip to London as a 16 year old and spending days just riding the underground and exploring the city. When that novelty wears off (it still hasn’t even come close), that’ll be time to turn up the toes. Thanks so much for this vid.
Absolutely stunning video! The only mistake I spotted was the Victoria Line section openings: Warren St to Victoria was opened in 1969, Victoria to Brixton in 1971 with Pimlico Station opening in 1972. Thanks and keep up with your stellar work!

the only bad thing about this video is that the district line services to southend weren't included in the video. other than that it's class
I love this but am having a few doubts about Tramlink (light rail/tram), Overground, Crossrail and TfL Rail (heavy rail).
It took me a while to realize what was wrong with the thumbnail. Haha. I wrote 1950 instead of 1900 (I hope this is what you meant!). It is edited now. Thanks for pointing out!

Fascinating. Seeing the real geographical layout as opposed to the famous stylised underground map makes it all look gloriously chaotic rather than the geometric beauty of the iconic map.
You can get an overlay of the actual lines on Google maps I believe - fascinating to see where they actually are in relation to each other.

In response to your request: this was a great idea as a method of showing the expansion of the system. The speed was a little fast when trying to both watch the lines spread out and read the description at the bottom of the screen at the same time, I had to re-wind a few times. Also could you list some of your sources in the description, not so I can fact check, but so that I can look into some of the histories in a bit more detail.
Definitely worth subscribing for future videos and I'm looking forward to seeing some future productions.
Thank you for your feedback! I agree on the speed being a little fast to read the caption but I also didn't want to make the video too long. Initially the video was 15~20 minutes long and I assumed not a lot of TH-cam audience will find long videos appealing. I am expecting my future videos for other cities won't be as squeezed as London as London system has exceptionally long history. I also suggest utilizing TH-cam playback speed function to slow it down a little!
I sourced all of the info from Wikipedia (individual references can be found in the respective articles of course). The London Tube Map Archive (www.clarksbury.com/cdl/maps.html) was also very useful.

@@FusionZenFlame I looked in to it and it is said that during electrification of the tracks, the District line was cut back to East Ham on 1905, restored to Barking on 1908, and then to Upminister on 1932.
The London, Tilbury and Southend Railway (LT&SR) were extended over the District line providing service to Southend switching between steam and electric locomotives.
When I was making the video, I initially thought the District Railway and LT&SR were separate services so I did not include it in the video. But after revisiting, I believe I should've included it in the map since old Undergound maps show LT&SR service to Southend as District line as well.
In short, District line to Southend should've been included in the video! Thank you for pointing it out!

Nice work. Better than other versions of london tube evolution because it's based on the real geography of the city, not some twisted, oversimplified graph. But we need an updated version with the Elizabeth line included now.

It is incredible to think that London had a metro in 1863 and it is not even thinkable in the biggest us cities

Whilst this is a very interesting and cleverly done video, it was a bit confusing in that sometimes there were new lines and sometimes new services and these were not distinguished. The Underground did not build a line to Slough for instance. Also, of course, is it TFL (in various guises) that has expanded, the Underground hasn't changed much since the Jubilee line opened.
They can focus mire on expanding the Tube to South London as the tube barely serves those areas.
umm the district line DID actually go to slough, not only there bu also to southend so maybe check your facts before you say something
@@xandascharts6901 the District Railway didn’t build these lines they instead made a deal with the companies who did own these lines to allow them to run their trains on these routes for a small fee, it’s why the Wimbledon branch of the District Line was only sold to TfL in the early 2000s for only £1 from Network Rail since the line was actually built by the London and South Western Railway who eventually withdrew services as they became unprofitable for them, it’s also why there used to be a BR Double Arrow sign at Wimbledon Park STN up until ~20 years ago
@@wclifton968gameplaystutorials yh ik that but he was saying that the district line never went to slough which was incorrect. i actually live next to east putney station so im quite aware of the fact that SWR built the branch from there. what i was saying is that the district line did go to those places and that he shouldn't say that MetroLiner was wrong because he wasnt.
@@omdesa far more national rail services in South London. SWR, GTR and Southeastern all have very sizeable metro networks.

This should be Remade to include the Extension to the Northern Line in 2021, ie, Battersea Station etc.! Nice to see what the London Underground Actually looks like on a Map.! 👍

It's missing the Gospel Oak to Barking Line. The Goblin is pretty key in this party of London.
There's also a number of other services missing but before the Second World War and definitely before the First it's harder to say for sure what were and weren't "underground" lines with a variety of what we'd now call National Rail services using some of the tracks in particular for the Middle, Outer and Super Outer Circles and their various successor services. The Earl's Court to Willesden Junction link even appeared on tube maps in the 1930s but was not a District Line service.
Can you do the same with Almaty?

Crazy to think that in the early 1900's many of the lines we have operational today existed over 100 years ago when life would have been very different but you could still get the tube to take you to most places in London.

NOTE: The waterloo and city line didn't become part of the system until 1994. Until then it was part of British rail

This is really cool, but let's be honest, the London Underground network is a bit of a mess. I suppose that's what happens when several competing railways build independently at different times and then end up being combined. If the whole Underground had been planned out to begin with, it could have been done a lot better.

@@kingofracism uh no, welcome to the concept of time, the line was first built for Victorian era London and was expanded and adapted as London modernised and rail travel became much more needed due to common people now relying on it for day-to-day travel.

The fact that it's overly complicated wasn't really a problem when I visited for less than a week. After about 2 days I actually got the hang of how to get to certain points optimally from my hotel. And I never even had to use anything other than trains, which was impressive.
Even if you consider the map impossible to read casually, the integration with Google Maps is great. Accurate by the minute for a ~1:30 hours ride to the airport, with 3 connections.
The best you can do in Bucharest is "40 minutes" taking ~30-50 with 1 connection, on the subway. For buses and trams I've hit "15 minutes" turning into ~20-90.

The last thing I did in London in 2015 was to take the underground from Paddington to Heathrow. Almost missed the plane to Paris.

Is the 'Central Tube Rover' day ticket still available on the Underground? I found it to be of valuable use during my London visits in the mid to late 1970s.
Great video, but it shows that for us in SW London, the Tube network hasn't expanded since 1889 (District Line), 1926 (Northern Line), 1971 (Victoria Line)...😭
