    No one should be in control of the lives of others, except God! Pleased to hear how those maroons fought for their lives. Thanks for this information because as an educator for years, I never heard of this part of Jamaica's history!

    The Maroons origin story does not start and end with West Africa. When the enslaved Africans fled into the mountains and establish their communities there, they met upon the Tainos who were also taking refuge in the heavily vegetated rugged terrain. The Tainos were integral in the Maroon's success. They taught them special cooking methods, herbal medicine and secret routes to launch suprise attacks against the British. The Tainos and Maroons eventually merged so now many Maroons have Taino blood. Although nowadays almost no one can claim to be fully Taino, their legacy lives on in the Maroons.

    Nice video of our ancestral history and legacy ✨️ It should be noted that after reaching Sierra Leone, a few eventually left for Jamaica where they repatriated to what they called "Kojo Town." They are now apart of the Flagstaff (Leeward) Maroons.

    Interesting video. If you have ever been to the Preston area of Nova Scotia, you might rethink the comments regarding "the great farming" area that was referenced. Some scholars point to the rocky soil as another factor in the difficult settlement for the Maroons. Getting goods to market was another challenge.

    I am a descendent of the maroons from their original home, Mooretown, Portland Jamaica.
    The maroons and a large percentage of us Jamaicans mainly came from the Brong-Ahafo regions of Ghana, Africa. The destiny of the Maroons did not end in Sierra Leone, the majority of them eventually made their way back to Jamaica!

      Ok but where were they prior to that if it's even true?
      As far as my research and knowledge maroons are a mix of black Europeans including Iberians and black American Indian.
      Ashanti are not originally from Ghana . They have a history elsewhere nobody wants to learn more about.
      Did you know a lot of west African ppl are descendants of religious warfare warriors who fled Europe?
      Some are also descendants of the conquistadors who were SWARTHY.
      We are being fed garbage about world history.
      I'm of Jamaican ppl too but we are a mix of indigenous aborigine American swarthy , indigenous Europeans swarthy not pale..France Spain, Portugal, England Scotland Ireland and still searching.
      Father side Yoruba and Igbo ... Even they aren't indigenous to west Africa.
      Wake up... The conqueror will always keep you a slave.
      I'm not a slave descendant and would never reference my lineage as such either esp based on some modern pplls bullshit lies. My ppl were a people of high class not trash.
      Plus if it were all true we'd be getting reparations. We got played and will be following our rails if we don't wake up and realize the colonists looked like us different shades of brown, copper, swarthy.
      Another name for brown red is Maroon.

Ashanties (akan) as a whole group of people where warriors, already experienced in combat, expect in guerilla warfare nd many also had experience in fire arms which is why they where able to lead nd fight back.. All the leaders who liberated most of the islands where from the AKan ethnic group from ghana.

    It would be surprising to know the Spanish also brought maroons with them on their voyage to Jamaica and that they fought alongside the Spanish against the British upon their invasion of Jamaica. When the British captured Jamaica the maroons was now a fighting force not just in trelawney but across the hilly hinterlands. The maroons are not just escaped slaves, they are also remnants of the moors that traveled with the Spanish albeit in a subservient class. The moors were a conquered tribe in Spain prior to Spain's conquest of the Americas and became vassals to the Spanish

      Thank you for your comment.
      The point being made is less about the proximity of food, and more about the manpower it takes to feed thousands of people on a daily basis.
      While you may be close to food, harvesting, preparing, transporting, and distributing are all labour intensive activities. Imagine this now in a “colony” that has limited infrastructure, and a very small amount of people who can actually do the labour. You can still starve. We don’t often think about the work required to go from source to table, especially when there are thousands of hungry people involved.
      So yeah, the colonists could EASILY starve if not for compelled labour from “Maroons” and forced labour from the enslaved people in Nova Scotia.

    1st of all what do they mean by 'maroon'? In Spanish it means brown reddish..however in English it became synonymous for "wild or feral" person. So it's more of an adjective than explaining who they were. Various sources give different origin stories so it's obvious the one aspect they had in common was their resistance to the imperialists back then. So where they are from is not important..these ppl were really "off grid" as we say today.

    • @darksethistory
      @darksethistory  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for your comment.
      “Maroon” in the context of the times simply refers to a person actively resisting the institution of slavery by escaping and opposing colonial forces, living communally, certainly “off grid” as you put it.

    • @Rockjamify
      @Rockjamify 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Unfortunately, the same Maroons would help to prolong slavery. They were responsible for returning runaway slaves, and quite often returned the dead for bounty. The Maroons, along with the Church Militia (a group led by an Anglican priest by the name of Bridges) were believed to have harassed the demonstrators organized by Sam Sharp. They also had a few slaves of their own.
      The Maroons who ended up being sent to Nova Scotia, were partly those who made Treaty with the former Colonial gov't to end the 2nd Maroon war. They were deceived after signing the treaty. A British officer who was embarrassed at the betrayal, broke his sword of honor, in protest.
      It should be of interest to note that the reason for the 2nd Maroon war was one of pride. Some young Maroon males were publicly whipped by British soldiers, in the presence of slaves, which was particularly humiliating to these young men.

    Nice! Actually the word "maroon" or "maron," as it was called in the French colonies, described runaway slaves. Those slaves would escaped to the mountains of Haiti/Jamaica and battle the Europeans/slaveowners. I used Haiti because that was where the maroons were able to mount a viable revolution which led to an independent black nation in 1804. That being said, maroons are not a tribe or a nation. It was a word used by slaveowners to describe runaway slaves.

Good narrative of the story though. Its important to know that Tainos and Maroons are distinct people groups. The Taino lived in Jamaica for thousand of year prior to colonization and had lived all over Jamaica. When the African enslaved ppl fought agasint the spanish and british and retreated into the mountains, they met the Tainos. The two ppls merged so nowadays many maroons have Taino blood. I think calling Maroons indigenous without recognising the history adds to the erasure of the Taino ppl.

    This deffienatly sounds like another new misleading way of watering down the Jamaican history, and leaving out a lot of important facts, while infusing LIES as facts.... 1st, there is no race of people leaving West Africa called Maroons.... 2ndly, your Maroon knowledge is lacking, confusing and sound inherited, and you left out that during the 1400-60, Ethiopian commandos captured in Eritrea by the Italian army, was sold to the Pirates from Port Royal, Jamaica, and were released on arrival as a conquored race, they went interior, and lived with the Tianos...By 1492 they saw Columbus came, then the war with Spain and England, then came the 1500s and they saw West Africans coming in shackles as Slaves, then sold to Plantation owners from America.....You also forgot to state that the Docile west African were sold, and the more hostile Ashanties were left back, who eventually ran away to join the new Ethiopian/Tianos, living in the hills...who know saw the horrors of Slavery and joind the war against it, ...1st, by walking underground in tunnels and caves from Morant Point, Jamaica, to Haiti, training and joining Tussant in the freedom of hati, Then they started a war at sea against the French Navy, distroying them, and the Slave traders they procted, and returing many ships to west Africa, you have not told them that they planted the Diplomat Harriet Tubman to run the underground railway that would take them North to Nova Scocia, which they had also Liberated ....and when that was a success, they returned to Jamaica and intensified the local slavery war and the expulsion of Willie Lynch...Yes, the Commando style Ethiopian gurellia warfare was strange and merciless to some West Africans too, yet effective, who were now war tired, and became Traitors against Jamaican freedom fighters and betrayed everything and are now called agents of the Crown of Englad....Why have they left out that Nova Scotia was Liberated by the Jamaican War Maroons, not these that they sent...but out of the ash came the last Ethiopian, born in Jamaica High Priest, initiating Lenard Howel, who Initiated Marcus Garvey ... WHY DO YOU PEOPLE KEEP REWRITING THE HISTORY OF A PEOPLE TO MAKE YOU LOOK THE VICTOR....??... This " STORY" is worst than Clinton Black's History of Jamaica.
