I have the old VHS of Godzilla vs. Megalon and their is 1 scene where his head catches fire when megalon starts dumping bombs on jet jaguar and Godzilla.
Considering that Satsuma himself stated that the BioGoji suit (the 1989 suit) was the comfiest out of all the heisei suits, I doubt the shock rumors were true. Also these incidents Ima list aren’t Godzilla related but are Toho-Kaiju related: During the filming of Varan (1958), there’s a scene where Varan hits a truck that explodes on him. However, Haruo Nakjima, who was inside the suit, suffered burns around his stomach and groin and had never healed (fun fact: that was the only known injury Nakajima suffered while filming). During the filming of Rodan (1956), the scene where Rodan crashes below the bridge and into the water was actually a blooper. The story was that during filming, the wire supporting the Rodan suit (with Nakajima inside) snapped, causing it to dive headfirst into the water. However, Nakajima came out fine despite the crash.
@@FloppaCraftThey didn’t have animatronics back then, so they needed people in suits to perform. Reminder these are 220 pounds or more of pure rubber and are extremely hot and moist inside. They had to stick a tube through the original 1954’s suit mouth just so the actor could breathe through the suit between scenes, and it also had no eye holes.
There was an incident with the Millennium Godzilla suit actor when filming a scene where Godzilla rises out of the water, because of how heavy the suit was, he had to be lowered into the water with a crane, but when he was being pushed in the water, his breathing tuber came off and had to be raised back up.
Yeah I believe he stated that in an article I once read that had the 3 Godzilla suit actors (Nakajima, Satsuma, and Kitagawa) expressing stories during filming, and Kitagawa mentioned the story where his oxygen tube fell off and was panicking. Bro probably had PTSD from that. They definitely didn’t like doing scenes in the big tank as aside from the large chance of drowning, they also stated that they know some people had pissed in the tank (felt even more bad for Kitagawa after that)
There's another close call from the Millennial Era. During a water scene, in one of the films, a movie crane was used to push the buoyant suit under the water. The suit actor had a breathing tube, but it became dislodged while he was being submerged. It took awhile to realize what was happening, but they did figure it out and brought him up and he was ok! Apparently, they quit doing water scenes, after that. Source: Excellent documentary "Bringing Godzilla Down To Size" that was included in the beautiful "War of the Gargantuas/Rodan" DVD release. Buy it if you can find it!
Wow this was beyond great. Love behind the scenes toho stuff (the actual footage was incredible and you're right the less accidents the better.) Would love to see similar treatment for the ultraman series. Thanks for posting.
All these suit actors deserve awards for toughing it out through their filming they brought so much joy to people all over the world it’s upsetting to see them go through so much stress
Little accident myth: a great myth in the Godzilla community is that in Godzilla Vs Hedorah, filming the fight scene the suit actor had a heart attack (not 100% on heart attack could have been something else) and had to be operated on, in the Hedorah suit. This is true, kinda. He actually had the appendix accident ,mentioned in the video, while promoting the movie. He was, however operated on while wearing the lover half of the Hedorah suit. This is actually mixed up with Godzilla vs Destroyah, with when he collapsed during a fight scene because of the head moving thing also mentioned. so uh, there’s that.
That isn't exactly true. Satsuma suffered from acute appendicitis while promoting Godzilla vs. Hedorah. Satsuma wore half the suit for an interview before his diagnosis, this is what spawned the myth. It's interesting to see the legend still lives on.
Bro this TH-camr deserves more subs, views etc, a lot of Godzilla videos like this get tons more views and this is about the exact same quality. Needs more attention.
If I remember in the Rebirth of Mothra series, apparently there was a bts footage of Rainbow Mothra on fire because of the excel strings. It wasn’t a suit accident but to be fair that’s even better because no one actually got hurt.

In my opinion the Fall into the temple may have been a accident. Cause if the temple was destrucable he would have fell through it. I've other movies where the destructable buildings are rather easy to destroy.
@Gojira 1962 correct me if I’m wrong but I think there was a accident when they were filming the scene where Godzilla and battra fall through the sea floor and into the outer core apparently when they were filming the fight the hydraulic ram for the lift broke off it’s mount from the weight of the suits causing the lift to drop suddenly and slam into the ground injuring Satsuma himself and the actor who played the battra larva
during godzilla vs destoroyah, there is a scene with destoroyah where he rams into a pole while flying. i dont know if there is an actor inside of the suits which there probably isnt but it exists
Did you know that in King Kong Vs Godzilla 1962) The actor for King Kong threw the suit actor for Godzilla (Harou Nakajima) into the water WHILE he was still in his suit. And wanted to prove to Harou that he was better and stronger than him. This could’ve lead to Harou drowning, but luckily. He didn’t.
The first Godzilla suit was very heavy and not well-ventilated. There are photos of Godzilla passed out on the sidewalk when the suit actor was exhausted and dehydrated.
iirc theres a documentary (bringing godzilla down to size i believe?) where suit actor tsutomu kitagawa mentioned that one time they were lowering him into the water w a crane but the breathing tube came off and he nearly drowned. not sure what movie specifically tho
I saw a BTS video of what I believe was ‘Godzilla & Mothra: The Battle For Earth’, courtesy of Big Action Bill, where a giant building prop fell right onto Godzilla with the actor in the suit
Actually I saw Godzilla get caught on fire in Godzilla vs megalon at the beginning part where Godzilla is trying to pull jet Jaguar out of the ground and megalon first shooting his fire balls if you look close you can see the top of Godzilla's head catches fire.
Why did they wear suits? They originally wanted to go for stop motion in 1954, but the deadline made it impossible, so they went to make a concrete suit (they didn't have much rubber after Japan lost WW2) why did they stop wearing it? CGI, suit making is expensive and impractical by the time Shin Godzilla was released.
the fact that in the first 11 Godzilla movies had the same actor for Godzilla and going thru all of that is insane
