This is amazing, English is not my 1st language and with the hearing and reading at the same time I can understand a little better and enjoy this classic in it's original language 🥰
thank you for this! i'm trying to read Austen for the first time and despite the fact that I mostly read classics, the language was still tripping me up a little. listening and following along with the first few chapters until I caught on with it myself was a major help :)
Why on EARTH would you start with such a big one?? Haha I’m finding this to be one of the harder ones to get through, hence being here for the audio book! Highly recommend reading Pride and Prejudice or Persuasion! Much easier reads in my opinion!!
How strange that Jane Austen would be the classic to trip you up with her language. I always found her to be the least challenging, as her mastery lays in artful descriptions rather than the usage of difficult words or flowery language. But of course there are lots of newer authors that can be considered classics and Austen's language might be a bit more of a challenge in comparison. It's cool that you have so much interest in the topic! Despite having no idea what you are usually reading i will dare it and venture to recommend, to all others who read this aswell, to look a bit outside the english language field. It is a shame how overlooked other masterworks are just because nobody hears of them in english speaking countries but i seriously recommend going out of one's way to look for them.
I like Emma as well. Austen is such an insightful writer. The difference in mores of her time and ours has to be ignored though especially Mr Knightly's confession of his first desire for Emma which comes right near the end.
I agree with you, however, when I read Pride and Prejudice, although I knew how it was to end, I was still very curious because, seeing how much they dislike each other at first, I could not make out HOW they were to end up together. So it was very interesting to follow the process, although the outcome was known.
Great reader! Sounds just like it sounds in my head. This happens to be my favorite Jane Austen, because Emma is so very lovable, despite her human follies.
Such a great story thank you for reading and uploading. Your slight cadence is wonderful. I don't think liturature was ment to be limited to an accent. Thank you!! Listening to you read is a joy.
Thank you so very much for this. I have always loved Austen adaptations and Emma is my favorite JA story. I am so pleased to be finally getting around to absorbing it in this form!
Sometimes I cannot imagine how this lady could read and speak any faster. My poor brain can’t keep up. The more complicated the sentence, the faster she reads it.
I'm studying to become an English teacher and I actually planned a lesson once (but it was only for practice and I never got to give it), in which I worked with Clueless and Emma. The many parallels to discover are great and they help the students to understand that there are many ideas in the novel which are still highly relevant now.
really excellent, one can listen and see subtitles, I wishe in the future there will be a feature that help the reader to klick o the word they he or she does not understand and loop up what it means.
I happen to really like the narrator. It’s really soothing and nobody with a stick up their own arse can change, stuck in their ways that it “must be an English accent” can change my mind. Those people can just find another audio version of the book and not troll on this one.
If you get hold of a DVD of the story you are interested in, it might help. I love Emma it is such fun. Emma enjoys match making until her friend takes notice of her very special friend.
Hi, Emma really has nothing to add to the conversation. Their older sister and brother, are married, which I found a surprise. Older sister seems very like the father. And the brothers very alike, too. Though, Emma is bored, she's listening to everything, every detail of their interests in the broader world. Read slowly, I hope it helps. Did you write a paper? It's interesting, to me, to how this scene is rewritten in each of the movies. But, these were my recent ideas.
She reads very well however I'll look for a different version only because I think reading Jane Austen in an American accent is weird. It might be fine for Americans but it's as odd as it would be for Gone With the Wind read by someone with a Scottish accent.
I think the reader is excellent. Interesting to think, while th debate continues, that Jane Austen herself would probably have herself spoken with a light Hampshire accent and 'heard' her own characters speak in much the same way. Anyway, accents aren't too important if the reader is as good as this one.
Angel CityGirl its not really lazy because it still takes the same amount of time, i just learn better from oral instead of written. I follow along in the book while she reads
