- Grandmaster Ben Finegold profiles the father of Armenian chess, Tigran Petrosian. One game is shown from each decade in which "Iron Tigran" competed. This lecture is a followup to the one Akobian gave earlier in 2015.

It's a shame that his most famous game is the one with the queen sac. Beginners are impressed my moves like that, but most good players can calculate forced mate in a couple of moves. What really makes Petrosian a special player are his positional sacrifices (mostly exchange sacrifices). His ability of evaluating imbalanced positions, as opposed to only calculating forced lines.
The beginners are just philistines. Boo on the newbies for not understanding deep, complicated top-level positional ideas.
Yes, his exchange sacs are pretty great and sound as well! Not just for attacking or winning the game strategically but also for conducting defense as well.
Spassky once said that Korchnoi's style was to put his pieces on bad squares in the opening. Then he would put them on good squares in the middle game.

Love Petrosian style, I find it harder to keep your position and defend from potential opponent attacks than try an attack and hope the opponent doesn't defend perfectly.

Petrossian was never " Boring " ,that was part of his psychological chess style to empty
the energy of his opponenets...He used to play draw 9 games and win the 10th game ;

Is Tigran Petrosian named after the world champion or was he his son or something
Named after. There are actually more than two Tigran Petrosians in chess. There have been at least four of them on the FIDE lists at one time or another. The rumor is that Armenia is secretly breeding an army.

I am guessing the strongest Olympiad side would be around 1962 and for me would Petrosian (future world champion), Botvinnik (then WC), Tal (x-WC), Spassky (future WC), Smyslov (x-WC) and then maybe Bronstein (drew WC match) or Keres although their actual team was Botvinnik, Petrosian, Spassky, Keres, Geller, Tal (still rather impressive!!)

Whites only check also repels the queen when the rook goes back down. Once it does that Rf6 is mate. Black would have to give the queen up, and white would soon mate anyway
