Spacewalking Home From Another World - The Longest EVA In Kerbal Space Program

- Trying to make an even smaller interplanetary rocket (13.8 tons) although this is only designed to land on the tiny moon of Gilly. Sure setting a new record for myself isn't necessarily that watchable, so, I decided to demonstrate a return mechanism that involves one of the longest spacewalks in Kerbal History. Almost 50 days in interplanetary space with nothing but an EVA suit. With 540m/s of delta-v and almost no instrumentation getting an interplanetary EVA return requires careful planning and economic flying.
And then he remembered his house keys were still in the vehicle...
Time to call a locksmith. :D
+Jose Suarez Call a locksmith!
Just send another vehicle to retrieve the keys
Call the Lockpicking Lawyer, he'll get it open for him!
So is the one person that disliked this the guy that had to clean the spacesuit after that long trip home?
Maybe...
"Now, getting a small spacecraft to Gilly isn't very interesting"
My greatest achievement of the last week was getting a small spacecraft to Gilly ;_;
have you gotten past gilly yet
So, this Felix Baumgartner spacejumped from the stratosphere? Pfft,Kenburry Kerman spacejumped from the moon. OF A WHOLE OTHER PLANET.
The moon doesnt technically count as a planet.
MarcusObrian thats why he says 'of a whole other planet' not just 'a whole other planet'
Right...specifics.
Luckily for little Kenburry, he doesn't need to eat.
He's just trying to show off because Jeb somehow survived skydiving into the sun.
Watching this gem again. Probably one of the most impressive things in KSP.
Man the game has changed over the last 6 years :D
*ground control to major tom intensifies*
Omg
I've been browsing your videos for about a week Scott, but I only just found this one. You posted it on my birthday last year. Thanks! Fun stuff.
Scott Manley, the interplanetary golf announcer, and the Kerbals are the golf balls.
This is the single greatest achievement in human/kerbin history! Is it still possible to get to eve with such a small rocket?
***** why not?
If you line everything up just right, then probably. All of those parts are, of course, still in the game with a relatively similar balance - you just have to get your launch and timing right. The Vanguard chutes are still around, too, so, unless EVA propellent gives you less dV than in this version, this stunt should be entirely repeatable.
1.0 just made this impossible, with the thermal heating Scott worried about... 2,5 years ago.
Sander Datema Just needs someone to implement a personal heat sheild like MOOSE ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOOSE ) in KSP and once again interplanetary trips without a spaceship will become a possibility
Kirishala Evenstar well in ksp a command seat and a service bay is basically moose. (Push the service bay with eva pack)
Because I wanted to show that it was possible using the EVA suit alone. Besides I didn't want to abandon a ship in deep space :)
Maybe I'll go out and refuel it to bring it back.
Damn Scott, you make my achievements look lame -.-;;;; I'm one of those people who seem to make 10x bigger ships, and get 10x less far. Though I've slowly been learning that bigger isn't always better, and I've been adopting that, the fact your ship is so TINY is insane....
Still a better space story than gravity
lol.... Gravity was pretty solid
yeah... if you say so... having seven prizes with a video game scenario... and that's not the least of this movie's problems if you ask me ^^
Totally Not A Cylon But there are massive and hilarious plot holes. Through the whole movie Clooney's character, the flight commander, explains what is happening to Bullock's character medically, i.e how oxygen deprivation works, who is the medical officer on the voyage! And she acts as if she didn't know these things! Pretty funny.
Brandon Cowan I know that this is 3 months later, but, under the extreme situations she was under, I would say she panicked and forgot those things. Clooney's character managed to stay calm and explain to her what was happening.
TheOnlyOwensey Right, just like how surgeons forget their training when they start cutting on their patient. A doctor that forgets how to be a doctor, is a bad doctor, even under immense stress.
i keep coming back to this one, always makes me so happy
I can't even use an EVA pack to get back to Kerbin from a low orbit, and Scott friggin Manley is using it to get between planets like it aint no thang.
I got a kerbonaut back to Kerbin on EVA once. It would have been more impressive if I had meant to.
***** ...That's brilliant.
What? WHAT?
I absolutely love KSP, and after all the time I've played it, and as much as it has taught me about orbital mechanics, I still would not have thought that the EVA jetpack had enough delta v for any interplanetary transfer. The science in this video is so advanced it appears to be indistinguishable from magic.
Also, jumping off of an asteroid/moon, rocketing past a planet and skydiving onto another planet. Take that, Felix!
2 Points, no disresepect intended but.
1) there's plenty of evidence for the Oort cloud, mostly related to the distribution of long period comets arriving from the edges of the solar system. Sure we haven't see an isolated object sitting in this cloud, but we know that there are object coming in from a region that matches the hypotetical location of the cloud.
2) I prefer to call it the "Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt" since Kenneth Edgeworth proposed it a decade before Kuiper.
What's funny is that atmospheric heating 'still' isn't added to stock ksp.
Stuff explodes all the time anyway, why bother? :D
Felix Ironfist Explode more!
Felix Ironfist seriously though... without deadly reentry it's kinda easy.
Well, yes, it's true and I see the point here - once the trajectory has been planned you only have to deploy the chutes and that's all. Just joking around.
:D Just one more update for more booms!
Science.... Like a BOSS.
I love these self-challenging videos, they're probably even worth their own playlist.
don't let any of these mod naysayers steer you away from fun and creative mods that the developers haven't had time to put into the game or are too short sighted to implement. be proud in the fact that you can look at a mod and develop a scenario *like this one* that is even more creative than the mod itself. loved the video
Man the stuff you do with KSP never ceases to amaze me.
This is an amazing achievement, thanks Scott for being so awesome.
The reason has to do with the original accretion disk that eventually became our system. The majority of dust and debris started out spinning in one direction (counter clockwise), so any straggling objects in near-polar orbits eventually collide with the debris in the equatorial orbit. Eventually, the objects with very odd orbits are either flung out, devoured by larger debris, or assimilated into a more normal orbit.
Thank you Scott.Yer curious spirit saves me weeks of screwing around in the universe. My kerbals live vicariously through you!
Is there irony that he says at the end of each video to fly safe?
This guy is on a completely other level with astrophysics... Hahaha absolutely nuts...
9:15
Where the spacewalk begins.
thx
^^^
No kidding! Amazing use of the Oberth effect there... That's a CLASSIC slingshot maneuver!
Great job. Always enjoy your videos.
Well this is really impressive (better than I could possibly ever do) but Turbo Pumped managed to go to Gilly and back with 2.9 tonnes, no eva and no parachute.
+Jacob A Yep and employed a high tech 'hatch base shock absorber' for landing.
+Scott Manley That was a personal favourite feature :P
Matt Damon could learn from this
And all without maneuver nodes.
And since 1.3.1, you can't make maneuver nodes on EVA anymore !
Why do real space missions use computers and navigators at mission control?
49 days without a bathroom stop - those Kerbals are amazing!
Land at target can work for you a little bit- I found it particularly useful for creating a mun base. If you go into a deorbital trajectory that's fairly close to your given target, select your target on the ground, and then do 'land at target', and you'll get a good course adjustment to get much closer to it. Once you're near the surface, you switch back to the default 'land' command. 'Land at target' isn't great at detecting altitude.
sees this title in sub box, clicks without checking. sees that it is another scott manly video. somehow not suprised. goddam am I glad I subbed.
Wow, I'm really impressed. Here's a fun challenge: Try crashing into the Sun with a space ship made entirely out of SRB's. Straight from the launch pad into the Sun.
Sounds easy, but requires a massive delta v. The space ship becomes colossal. I couldn't do it just with the boosters - had to use a bit of liquid.
Even the length of the video is telling you how awesome it is
That is one hell of a skydive :P
+Richard Smith What a brilliant way of looking at it X)
It has an ISP of 800 in space. That means it is very fuel efficient, but with the trade off of having low thrust. It is a good idea to use them for interplanetary/moon travel. Just make sure if you're landing that your craft has a high enough TWR to take off.
I just love the look on the Kerbal's face when exiting the atmosphere.
The suit doesn't have enough delta-V to do an orbit insertion and rendezvous, so this isn't going to happen.
I'd like to what you could do with the KIS (Kerbal Inventory System) EVA tanks that Kerbals can use to replenish their supply. That would be extremely interesting to see what kind of crazy antics Jeb could do with over 100 units of EVA fuel.
Skydiving from another planet's moon. That Kerbal just earned you a sub.
I give respect for getting into an amazing orbit without pulling out the orbit map
I have a kerbal that has been orbiting Kerbin for about a year. Is that cruel?
I left Bill on Minmus and he seems happy as can be, but I don't think Kerbals like being stuck in vacuum. It is a little bit cruel but why bother? It's a game.
Evan Blake Haha! I guess so.
What's funny is just recently I left a Kerbal in orbit. He's back now though, because I found a glitch that made him disappear, or just didn't save properly.
Evan Blake Either you deleted him from the tracking station, or like you said, it didn't save and you exited the game. My guy is still in orbit so it's not a glitch :)
Okay, thanks.
That is just awesome covered in awesome sauce.
Great job man, you are GOD of physics. And im still stuck with the wheel inventing lol
I bet he was like "Canon ball!" As he spacewalked home
Didn't know a thing this guy talked about. But it was still cool.
I agree. I have manualy flown interplanetary SSTO missions by hand, but it's honestly quite boring to do after the first few 15 minute burns.
Man I was hoping to see the kerbal blazing towards Kerbin in a fireball as he crossed the atmosphere
This was when Ksp aerodynamics were much more forgivingg
HOLY SHIT! WOW! You made it back to Kerbin! Unbelievable O.o
I've done this a few times as well. The re-entry effects make it easier to work out the retro vector for any remaining jetpack fuel you have. I've found though you need to be going slow enough. I tried launching straight up and my kerbal just dies. The lower the angle through the atmosphere, the better for slowing down.
Why use a parachute when you can just land on your head?
The nuclear engine gives more change in velocity per unit of fuel spent (ie. it has very high specific impulse), but its thrust is rather weak, so you need to burn it for very long periods to get anywhere. Terrible for getting off of planets, but perfect for interplanetary travel.
Forget Felix Baumgartner, the Kerman's take the record for highest space jump!
As for the people arguing about Kelvin and Celsius, 1 degree Kelvin is equal to 1 degree Celsius, but the scale starts at absolute zero (-272 degree Celsius, 0 degrees Kelvin). A random fact only Scott will get, it is a scalar quantity =3
In case no one's answered this, it's because of the solar system developed from a loose gas cloud that condensed, and the gravity pulls it in one single orbital plane. (and some other processes I don't know. I'm not a physics major. :P)
I'm a college student, and I asked my Astronomy Professor that same question. Strange, isn't it? All the planets and all (~most of~) their moons are roughly on the same orbital plane, plus or minus a few degrees. It's beautiful, actually.
35 years. That's how long the mission took. :O
When he gets back his mum be like *wow you've grow-- never mind*
Is my dad getting milk on gilly?
6 years ago. Shit this game has come a long way!
1:37
The jimbaling engine?
gimbaling
Nothing of the sort, I used mechjeb to stop me getting RSI from holding an orientation manually in space, I still plotted all my courses manually.
I only went to the mun and back with shitload of fuel and he can go to another planet with just one fuel tank wow
Granted, he is using MechJeb...
I can barely get shit into orbit and this guy doesn't even need a ship for the fekkin return trip from a planet hella miles away
Achedb0b1 Try starting from gilly... Or use Mechjeb.
It does help. But I only use it if something is getting repetitive, or when I need the accuracy.
Now I want an interstellar spacewalk.
omg that was unbelievable. iv seen a return from the mun and minmus by EVA but a different planet... wow
Scott, you didn't even need the parachute to land safely. I de-orbited a kerbal at 100 km and as long as he lands on land, he almost always doesn't die.
Well, the effects in .19 will be cosmetic, but I know they do plan on eventually improving the aerodynamics calculations and spacecraft (and Kerbals one assumes) will be able to be damaged by reentry at some point...
This video has some of the best top comments I have ever seen.
I've thought of a way to do it without using none-standard parts.
If there is a mod that lets you have 2 command modules on a rocket, then make a minimal rocket with 1 main one, and an empty on that you decouple with a really small amount of fuel and a rocket. If not, then just launch another rocket into orbit.
Do the same as you did in this video, up until you reach Kerbin's orbit, then, get into the same circular orbit around Kerbin as rocket, and use that to get back.
Well here's your problem, you make so many awesome KSP videos people don't want to watch anything else. You get people so into this stuff other games fell like to much trouble.
You didn't really need the parachute I think, I once sent Bob on EVA around Kerbin, and used the jetpack to deorbit him, and used it again for half a second to slow my descent 20-30 meters above the surface, and he somehow managed to survive. I guess the terminal velocity is so low around the surface, that dipping a bit underneath it is enough for a "safe" landing.
XD THE KERBELS FACE WILE GOING INTO ORBIT
I ran out of fuel getting home from the Mun, so Jeb used his EVA pack to get just barely into Kerbin's Atmosphere. After several orbits he bounced onto the ground.
I like to think that Kerbals are a species that can hibernate and thus use little food and life support and not go crazy on long journeys.
these retro ksp graphics are beautiful
And now let him walk back to the command center... *evil*
yes ^#^
Awesome vids! Awesome guy!
Hey, it was new knowledge to me! I didn't know Kelvin uses Celsius before he mentioned it.
Kenburry Kerman with the longest Spacewalk in History... Now imagine having an itchy nose during those 49 days... or the urge to release some gasses...
How am I just noticing, now in 2015, that the video time goes to 1337?.. it gave me a chuckle
YugureDarkwolf He had to skip over a transfer window, Gilly wasn't alligned.
Oh my god...
I feel like that's how he passed his 49 days... He probably returned a changed kerb.
Scott Manley is OP and needs a nerf!
I can't stop laughing, this was the best thing to watch!
Oh yeah, a video form Scott!
Scott. You are officially a master. Where do you learn this stuff? I wanna learn too.
That life support system must be magical...
OK, I want to see you do something like this. But with a twist. I want you to put a ship in Orbit around Kerbin and do the whole Gilly and back thing, but instead of parachuting in I want you to get inside of the orbiiting space-craft and then de-orbit to Kerbin. You do not have to land at KSC but extra points if you do.
Dude, you're insane
How did u get the parachute was it a mod?
jeah, he sayed it in the video, it's vanguard technology
I love your vids! U earned a sub!
Sorry to dissapoint but that's still 0.17.1 no idea when the official release of 0.18 is.
Leet minuets... nice job there scott
i have a challenge, not one with an achievement or completion per say, but a challenge none the less.
make a ssto, and try to 'skim' the atmosphere to gain as much speed as possible, for as long as possible.... (for anyone who dint understand that, basically explains itself if the first episode of farscape (a really bad sci-fy tv show))
preferably use this idea to accomplish something better, but still a good idea, especially if deadly re-entry is turned on. then you might have to put some thought into the craft.
The part.cfg for the turbojets mean they generate zero thrust at 2400m/s
I don't think your complaint carries any weight until you demonstrate that you can EVA between planets.
beat THAT Felix!
i think for a moment that kerbal wasn't able to stand up and he did
This. I've been killing them since I discovered EVA and their jetpacks. I find it funny as hell that they can re-enter and survive.
I think it's the Mun
12:03
"And I think its gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone"
"One giant leap" taken literally.
Will be much more "fun" for the kerbal when the deadly reentry heat finally works :D
