  • LNER A2 Pacific 60532 Blue Peter on a ffitted freight passes Kinchley Lane during an evening photo charter at the Great Central Railway 23 May 1997.
    As was usual, towards the end of a photo cahrter when the light was fading for the photographers, a couple of fast run-pasts were arranged for the video boys. This was the last run-past of the day

    I could feel the force of that glorious A2 from my living room - as expected of Peppercorn's Mixed Traffic Pacific. Props to the cameraman for that zoom out when Blue Peter picked up speed around the bend. An excellent piece of video recording.

    Now that's something you don't see every day 🤩. It may have been commonplace at one time but I love the fact that the GCR "does freight" so that everyone can experience it today.

    Great to see this loco back in steam again! It was on static display at barrow hill for a long time and while it was there i was very privaliged to be given a guided tour of this magnificant engine by a former emplyee of the shed.even got to sit in the drivers seat! A boyhood dream come true! Must be a real experience driving this beast!

    This may sound like a stupid question but are the speed restrictions different for non passenger carrying trains on preserved railways or should this fast freight have been looking fast with lots of regulator and noise but still travelling at 25mph? Either way the video is a right treat and filmed beautifully.

    • @winco68
      @winco68 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As I understand it the GCR has to adhere to the 25mph ruling for passenger trains but that doesn’t apply to non passenger carrying freight, demonstration and test trains.
      I was told that freight and TPOs can run at 45mph and test trains at 60mph for steam and 75mph for diesel.

    • @chriswilson2431
      @chriswilson2431 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@winco68 thanks for your reply. I didn’t know that! That would explain why its got such a wriggle on! I wonder if all preserved railways are able to do the same or GCR is different as it’s the only preserved mainline? Who knows. Thanks anyway and keep safe in all this mayhem we’re living through.

    • @winco68
      @winco68 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chriswilson2431 Thanks Chris yes we’re certainly living through strange times! I believe the GCR to be the only heritage railway permitted to operate trains at those speeds. I’d assume that is down to the 5.25 miles of double track most of which appears to be flat bottomed rail with concrete sleepers although not continuously welded. Also an absence of inclines and tight curves make it perfect for fast running. I’m led to believe that the northern section or at least part of it will likely become double track once unified.

    Blue Peter didn't sound too happy with the goods train. When she whistled, she sounded like she was very angry. I can imagine it.
    DRIVER: Sorry, my pretty. This goods train run wasn't my idea.
    BLUE PETER: It's not you I'm mad at. It's that Foreman. Asking me to pull a goods train indeed! What does he think I am, a Truck-sitter or something? I'm an express passenger engine, not the mixed traffic kind. Grrrr! I'll show him one of these days!
    I enjoyed the video nevertheless.
