    You don’t put a coat of paint on first or a clear coat?

      You could coat the wood with gesso if you would like to. I didn't. I used high quality acrylic paint and that was enough.
      You could use a clear coat as well. I didn't. The ornament doesn't get handled a lot and preserving it was never a priority for me.
      Just a fun project.
