  • This slide show features the beauty, brains and versatility of the ACD. All images by Jeff Jaquish
ALL herding shots were taken under these situations:
ACD Club of America 2007 National Specialty
    AKC sanctioned herding trials
    ASCA sanctioned herding trials
ACD Club of Canada sanctioned herding trials
ASCA of Canada sanctioned herding trials
    Herding clinics
Working on a real ranch, on real cattle in real situations.
Most of the dogs you see herding are in the top ten ACD herding dogs of North America who come from working ranches. One in particular is the Canadian ACD National Specialty top Herding Dog as well as the American ACD National Specialty Herding Dog.
Most people who view this slide show do not realize they are seeing some of the best and the absolute proven best herding ACDs in North America.

Great photos of great dogs! My ACD/German Shepherd mix, Sydney, passed in May 2010 of osteosarcoma (cancer) in her pelvis...spent thousands on her trying to fix it but nothing could be done...only 2 1/2 years old, just coming into her prime. Have a new lovely girl..McNab/Aussie Shepherd mix, Chili. Herding breeds are the best!
    Rest in Peace "Squido"

Greatest dogs ever! Smart, loyal and incredibly strong for their size. We had a Blue Heeler called Tash for 13 years until she got cancer and she was the best dog ive ever seen. I plan to get another, when i get a big enough yard!

Fantastic Dogs, My old blue boy HASLER went to sleep in December 2008 after 15 and a half years, he watched my kids grow up. My family and I now have another blue dog and we hope to have him for as long Hasler. they are the best natured, smartest, and most loyal dogs that ever to walk this land.

Awesome shots of some really great working heelers. They are the best dogs ever!!! They make the best companion dogs as well, as long as you exercise them every day and have plenty of ball or frisbee action. I love my little girl Sky to pieces!!!!!

Great vid, thanks! My first ACD was a stray and the smartest dog I have ever met. He was so well trained and a true working dog, someone must have really missed him but as hard as I tried no one came forward (lucky for me). He cut the time it took to get all the livestock out of the pasture down a whole lot. But my best friend of all time, my second ACD, has recently passed and I miss him every day. He was such a smart-ass and as we all know 100% loyal! Love ACD's.

This is the best Cow Dog video I have ever seen! GREAT WORK! I have a 3 year old Stumpy tail Queensland Blue Heeler, and the only thing he likes to herd is me and the gardener! Woe be to the person who turns his back on my Blue; he's gonna get a good nip at the heels. Thanks for posting those photos. I've sent this video to everyone I know so they can see what a special breed these dogs are.

My ACD was the best. He died two years ago. Not from old age but from three pit bulls and one boxer. He was defending me from some dogs that got out of the house and he was with me on my daily run. The vet told me i needed to put him to sleep. he was in a very bad shape. I was soooo sad i even cry (i don't like to cry). he was the best. rest in peace John Parker Demitrsiky

I had a blue heeler when I was growing up. Right away as a puppy she started biting the heels of everybody in the house. Then started biting the tires on bicycles, cars, atv's, tractors and even the skis on the snowmobile. Finally I had her channel that energy onto the livestock but she still continued to bite everything else. I remember she was so fast that she actually caught several chipmunks before they got up the trees. She was the guardian of the farm.

Great shots of the blue dogs in action. My blue boy turned 15 back in Aug and so many of your pics reminded me of when he was younger. I think I will have to make the hardest decision of my life soon as his legs dont work so well any more, but for me to hang on to him much longer is not fair on him. Thankyou very much for the pics

These are great dogs and need to be told right from wrong, at least in your world. If you have kids no problem but it will look at them like just a sister or brother (another pup). You need to train them every day and teach them as they are very smart. You can't go wrong if you love them and they will love you.

I have a ACD. She is 14 years old and has been a wonderful pet and companion. At 14 she is a little slower than she used to be but still my best and always willing exercise partner. When my kids were younger mty ACD (Taz short for "Tasmania") would herd the kids into a corner of the backyard and then wait for them to disperse and then herd them into a corner again. The kids loved it and so did Taz. Wonderful animals. Thanks for the post!

I don't live on a farm, but we spent a lot of time in the Utah mountains. I feel save with my dogs knowing they will protecting me when and if I come across a cat.

I have had a grand total of 2 cattle dogs in my life, 1 blue, 1 red (BTW I'm 30, they live forever) I won't have anything else. They solve the nature v nurture debate, treat a cattle dog like ya best mate and they return it in bootfulls! I will never forget the day we had to put Sassy down, (I'm choking up now). I was 16, she was 14, I actually can't remember life without her before then.

Our ACD is probably the most intelligent and affectionate dog I have known. She responds to a number of commands... "Give me 5" "Give me 10" "Give me a hug" "Turn around" "Stand up" and so many more... She loves the interaction and has a great smile when she is happy. She thrives on affection and is a very quick learner, with an almost uncanny ability to understand what is being asked of her. She understands sign language as well as vocal commands. Wonderful breed.

You've got some really nice pics in here! These dogs are so lucky -- they get to herd cattle. I live in the suburbs with my two heelers, who go on walks and to the dog park (where they try to herd the other dogs) but it would be so awesome if they had some cows or sheep to chase.

    kinghitz,
Thanks for your comment and I agree, there should be no unnecessary biting any place on the livestock. However, the ability to head or stop the forward movement of the livestock is a tool a herding dog should use judiciously. That is where proper training for both the dog and the handler is required.

I actually have an ACD mix as a service dog and trained her myself. ACD's as service dogs cannot be trained by someone else and switched to a disabled person like most labs can. However we have built an insepertable bond, and as people have said... she is not one you want to step over to get me. I have yet for her to growl, bite, snap or raise hair at someone who comes near me. However is ALWAYS VERY aware of our surroundings and peoples intentions. She is blk/bwn brindle named Makiya

Hi Brad, I Agree if a dog is biting just to bite it is not good. If a dog HAS to use a bite to make the cattle go back to the herd or to encourage or to stop forward movement then that is a good dog. In most farming situations, dogs and cattle know the routine and conform. Most of these pics are of dogs in competition where the cattle don't know the course and need to be convinced unwillingly.
