British Rail Network SouthEast 1990-Clapham Junction with Class 50, 73 & Southern Region EMU's

- It's October 1990 and i'm at Clapham Junction late one Saturday afternoon. We see Inter-City operations on the Gatwick Express with class 73's while a class 50 storms by on a West of England express. The EMU action includes CIGs, 442 Wessex Electrics and 455s plus a departmental EMU. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!
Remember spotting there as kid in 79. So much going on it was hard to keep up
I love the old southern emu's they had such character
I had just started as a Xmas temp with HMV Trocadero when this was filmed. I would’ve been travelling through here from Dorking every day. It’s so familiar, given how long ago it now is. Thanks for sharing.
Always said that Clapham Junction was a quiet place, a mere 1-2 trains.... Every minute

Really unusual to see a Class 930 moving around during the day, a good find. Despite looking like EPBs, they were actually converted from 4-SUBs.

Interesting seeing the mix of different shades of NSE blue at the time. Particularly the 455 unit at 6:30 which appears to have both!
It faded in the sun shockingly to my memory!
A sad reminder of how much better things were in those days.
Certainly more varied traction going on! I love that trainspotting is still a thing, but I don’t know how modern spotters see the differences in all The units!!

Hence the expression “it’s like Clapham Junction in here…” (it’s probably a bit of a parochial expression for Londoners only!!)

The unit at 1:40 with the headlights reminds me of an animate skeleton (think Papyrus) with the tiniest set of spectacles perched on their nose.
I was through Clapham junction the other day and the only link remaining is the southwestern 455 emus
Given the paint schemes had changed the views here had been largely the same since the 1960s onwards with just the 442/455 units as more modern - the Gatwick express used older rolling stock
Only thing that was negative was a *VERY* sparse service (infrequent intercity) on West London line, unlike the high-frequency service today from London overground and southern

They had buffets on the third rail units

When was British Rail disbanded?
BR ran their last train in 1997. They started the privitisation processin April 1994. The BR Board as a legal entity existed until 2013 (mostly looking after ex operational railway infrastructure, old tunnels, viaducts, bridges ect).....
