    That undue reputation that you sometimes hear about Aurora should have ended many, many years ago. But I do know what caused it:
    I went to high school briefly here in the 1970s when Aurora was kind of divided between lower-income and military. Surrounded by Lowry Air Force Base, Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center and Buckley Air National Guard Base at the time, there was not much housing on the bases like you see in other military towns, so all of the friends I had from military families lived off the base. Not to mention the number of military retirees who lived in the area. This lead to a stigma of families not wanting to live around all those military people. Or wanting to live by just "certain military people like military doctors" and not other military people. I know, seems stupid now but you have to remember the time period. But Lowry is closed, Fitzsimmons is closed and now the most amazing medical campus with University Hospital, Childrens Hospital and VA Hospital all stand on the same grounds as that old army hospital. All that is left of the former military presence is Buckley Air Force Base (name changed many years ago) and we love our Air Force and other military people. The military stigma that seemed to exist back then is absolutely gone. Progress is wonderful, thank god.
    The second thing that caused part of the reputation was busing. Let me start this out by saying that forced school busing ended in Colorado 25 years ago. Now, since part of Aurora was within Denver School limits, there was busing and it was a problem. For the families who had children who were bused and for the children who had to cope with it. It truly was a really bad situation as I remember it. But like so many other things, time has moved on and society has changed. Busing is gone and actually, most of the schools are being rebuilt. I think the last of the round, no-classroom style 1960s middle school came down about a year ago and was replaced with a beautiful, modern, really large 2-story middle school. I don't know who Aurora Public Schools has for an architect but all I can say is: Congratulations, bravo, great job!
    The third thing that caused Aurora's reputation was the type of housing. Oh god, it was awful. Well, if you liked red brick houses or houses with that awful siding that was so popular for too long - that were built between WWII and 1970, I guess you would have thought it was okay. When my folks moved us here from California in 1975, from a teenage point of view, I was horrified. I thought the houses were too small, ugly, not enough trees, the high school sucked, not enough restaurants, not enough fast-food, not enough of anything post-1970, etc. etc. For a long time, I thought if you wanted to see a blueprint of what not to do when creating a new city, this was it. And honestly, it was many years before I thought much of a change happened. It was in the 90s that you really started to see what I call "The Big Change." As the century changed, the housing in Aurora really changed all-the-more with it. The remodels and new housing were just amazing. They still are. Although I still miss the houses of California all these years later (Eichler houses are still my favorite), I think pretty much everyone can find a home they love in Aurora. Even the condos and townhouses are great.
    I'm not sure how to phrase this last issue that caused a stigma in Aurora. It had to do with the time period, income inequality and racial divisions. When I think about the Aurora I moved into as a teenager, I remember 3 distinct areas. I also remember the ravages of certain drugs in certain time periods. But I also remember watching Aurora completely redo itself starting with the closure of military bases, the digital age making itself known in Colorado and the Denver Tech Center being built ten minutes by freeway from Aurora, the housing booms that brought in out-of-state ideas and the modernization that continues to just rock the area. Most of all, what I love about Aurora now is the people. I mean there is everything and everyone you could want out here. It truly is a great place to live.
    All I will tell people now is if you have any reservations, check the yelp reviews then come rent a place for a month or two and check it out. I'm not going to try and convince people that the stigma of living in Aurora is silly and should have died out 25 years ago. They'll just have to see for themselves. I just think there isn't much I can say to people who are going to wonder how to believe some random person on social media. I will proudly tell people that one of the very first two In N Out Burgers in Colorado opened in Aurora in November. And there was a 10 to 12-hour wait to get a burger for the first couple of months. There's still an hour or so wait now if you want to go through the drive thru. (I went there a couple of days ago, walked in, walked right up and ordered, no wait.) I hear In N Out is now drawing up plans to open a couple of more places in Aurora. Good choice.

    Are there high rise condos new construction in Aurora, close to the airport?. A gated community of town homes bellow 2000 square feet would work too. Thanks,

      I haven't seen word of any new high rise condos in the Aurora area yet. Saddle Rock has a gated Townhome community (though I do believe there is a back way in w/out a gate- FYI)

    I just have to ask, who's buying all these 750-800 thousand dollar homes.I have a home outside Atlanta it's a 5-4 3 car with a big backyard that I paid 475 for and I'm selling it wanting to move to CO, but those prices are making me rethink that move now which really sucks because I've really wanted to move out there for awhile! I don't have 300K to put down.

    • @AlysonWahl
      @AlysonWahl  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Joe, One definitely gets a bigger home for the dollar in the South than you get here in Colorado - you're right. As for who is buying them - anyone and everyone. There are young couples who have chosen a lucrative career path, There are folks at the early family stage. And a really nice ranch-style home can easily hit that price point too, so there are plenty of empty nesters who spend that much on the home as well. There are still beautiful homes to be had around $500K, but it won't be like your Atlanta home. But our weather isn't like Atlanta's either (wink wink) - and that's a big draw :) Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. I so appreciate it!!

    Hi Alyson! I know this is an older video but I’m really hoping you answer my questions. Do you think Aurora is getting even more gentrified? I just bought a house there in this terrible market and I am hoping that it will be worth more as the years go by. Do you think Aurora will hit Denver prices eventually?

    • @AlysonWahl
      @AlysonWahl  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congrats on buying a home! Historically the market has done nothing but go up. Even after blips (and the recession) values are up over time. The same should bear out for your new investment. Buying > Renting...congrats!!
