It’s strange to see Matt, having paid his dues over the years as a slave, a gladiator, etc…be lead archeologist on a Roman villa. Congratulations on your promotion Matt!

Now while the new presenter is probably a nice chap , listening to his calming unexcited voice, makes me wanting to fall asleep while watching what used to be my favorite series. Now I don't mean to be disrespectful, I just miss the excitement Tony used to give me watching the Time Team dig up the tiniest bit of archeology.
as one of your very small patreon monthly contributors, I am so excited to see you all able to be starting up again after a hiatus of 10 years. Miss Tony , Mick, Phil etc. ,but your new presenter is delightful and love seeing some returning familiar faces and new folks coming on board. Got chills of excitement running up and down my spine and arms for a second or two when I heard the familiar opening drum salvos!! well done one and all and thank you !
Time Team must evolve least it be unearthed by a future archaeology show :P I miss them too - but how about the Tony, Micks and Phils that we've yet to meet? onwards!
@@JohnnyWednesday Yeah that's a chemistry that just can't be recreated. Phil is missed the most since he was so earthy. The current crew are nice and professional, but the show could use a little of that Phil-ness. We don't need drama like some other shows, just the occasional "Get out of my trench" moments.
I like the new format -- an hour and a half for three days feels like a huge bonus. It's also amazing to see the technological advances, especially after rewatching some of the first seasons!
From Michigan, in the U.S.-- You think YOU have 'fun' with that!? I know **exactly** how you feel! Your continent seems to have more than mine, as far as ANCIENT goes. I'm just so happy Time Team is back, I am honestly in tears! I am SO glad the dig days have been expanded into separate episodes. Makes for a more relaxed, and detailed, program. Wonder if an archaeologist has contacted any 'Mud Larkers' for some of their finds?
20:30 - I can't help feeling this is the moment where Matt comes into his own. Professor Matt, if you will. I realize he's been quite knowledgeable all along, but this just somehow seems a more authoritative Matt, and it is great to see.
And it is important when working with Neil. I don't want to bash Neil to much, but from what I have seen of him, he has a tendency to form an idea in his mind of what something is going to turn out to be and becomes really invested in that idea being true. Maybe he is just like that in front of the cameras, but it is a very unscientific approach to an investigation... Matt is far more down to earth and about seeing what comes up and letting the evidence guide him. Maybe the difference is just that Neil is supposed to form an idea of what is down there from Geophys results so he can make an overall plan, thus he is inclined to share his initial ideas more for the camera, where as Matt just gets told where to dig and then he tries to make sense of what is in his trench. Then Neil comes and tries to fit it into a bigger picture, I just find that sometimes it feels a bit like Neil tries to fit it into HIS bigger picture...
The division by day and the slight changes in the format seem to me an improvement - we have more of a chance to see the smaller decisions made while work is in progress, and the result (for me, anyway) is more of a sense of the actual business of digging. I mean no disrespect to the earlier Time Team in any way (It's only because of the craft involved in the previous chapters that I even notice this), but this somehow feels more "real" and has the texture of the quotidian daily labor punctuated by bouts of excitement that I imagine working a dig to have. Beautifully done.
Well it's the luxury of no longer having to adhere to a 40+ minute TV episode format bounded by commercial breaks. I love that we now have the space and time to be expansive, here on TH-cam. You sound like you'd enjoy the Dig Cam that was available on Patreon when the dig was actually ongoing, though XD Literally just you and the duty archaeologist staring at the JCB together
No it doesn't, I completely disagree. I think the discussions Mick & Dr. Pryor had on the car hoods were genuine. Neil ignores and getting a feel for that big screen takes time away from trenches.
@@marysweeney7370 i miss Tony and I think the original format was great. I’m not an academic so Tony’s approach made this American tune in all the time! Now it’s , well…Academic.
My favorite was MEET THE ANCESTORS. Far prefer that chap to Tony Robinson and he was qualified. He really became emotionally involved with the individuals they investigated. I think it was Julian Something? Though I could be inventing that. I think he was interviewed in the Farewell to Mick of Time Team. Sadly, I have only seen 1 episode of the show on yt. I suppose I should check if any more have appeared - but I think it is patrolled and removed zealously. Makes me sad, as I am sure he would get millions of views, and earn tens of thousands of extra money for his new interests.
Nope, I can't get along with this new version, even though some of the old crew are in it, but not the same without Mick (RIP)and Phil are in it anymore, and the narrator has his sleep inducing voice doing the commentary, and is no Tony bouncing about the 'dig' explaining things.
It is wonderful to see that “young” Matt has actually made a profession of being an actual digging archeologist Hatcher than being retired to mostly academia and looking at Time Team nostalgically as having had great fun in his specialty once!
Great to see the band back together. Still have the chemistry that made the show a success from the start. Great show for education and entertainment. I have watched and re-watched every episope but this one.
@@hoogelande Somebody running around once in a while would be great. I feel that they softened and slowed down the program a bit too much, and this has me losing my focus - wondering off to other internet things/news/shows, then back again. Tony and the production team knew what it took to keep us locked in.
@@workingguy-OU812 I also lost focus. I can't get used to the new presenter's voice. Boring. Good tone for reading a bedtime story, to put you to sleep. >> Way Too many 'New' faces...to make a connection with them. @@l.m.4014 Well, it too the team time to meld and develop as a team and as personalities, so I certainly feel that all should be given the time to do so. Perhaps even the presenter could pipe up a bit and talk a little faster. Nothing wrong with him save for the tone-for-grandparents speed and softness he has been using thus far. We need to see them all in their natural environments as well - i.e. a pub drinking beer.
Love Time Team so much! 🥰 Dig 1 of 2022 was so reminiscent of the Fogou excavation from Series 3 episode 1 - but with so much more brilliant information! 💯 R.I.P: Robin Bush, Mick Aston and Victor Ambrus. 😭

At the end of 32:05 minutes, I'm stuck on a cliffhanger! I have to wait until tomorrow for the next bit. Yes, I knew the set up but I am impatient. I really enjoy Natalie and Gus. It's so fun to see John, Stuart, Carenza, Helen, Bridget, Raysan, Naomi, Neal, Matt and absolutely everyone working through the process, adapting and investigating. Woohoo!
I don't start until I see pt 2 is up. But dividing into 3 gets Timeteam 3 times the viewers that 1 full episode would get, thus 3 times the yt advert money.
I was expecting something to be missing but after watching the last episodes there is nothing missing. The transition was seamless. Others not on were thought about but not missed. I became a patron. I've been watching since it's first episode decades ago.
@@ghomerhust just search for time team season whatever, there are 20 seasons plus these new ones. I'm clearing a couple of acres of land that i have and discovered the entire 2 plus acres sits on indian mounds that used to be in the middle of an ancient riverway. I've discovered tons of little carved stone effigies, stone tools, some arrowheads, carved teeth, pottery and when the septic tank was installed a big pile of iron slag came out of the hole. It's at the foot of one of the mounds. There's no less than 15 little mounds. There's probably more as im still clearing land on the other side of my little swampy creek, the remainder of that ancient waterway. I'm constantly finding new things. We have bonfires on top of the highest one on the weekends when we cook out. We love it. I've had to return to these shows uncountable times to figure out what I'm looking at. I paid attention to the landscape archaeology parts to help me identify old riverways. My little town is full of mounds. They either put roads over them or through them. I've stopped at no less than 70 places and looked in the ditches or sides of mounds plowed through for a road. Every single place has pottery that i've stopped. Some places had hundreds of pieces on the surface. Small groups of hunters and gatherers my butt. These mounds go on for miles ane miles. They were smelting iron. Phil Harding would flip out over the amount of worked stone and flint that's on my land. Its so much i've stopped putting it into buckets and just have piles around the place, close to where they were found. Most are found by walking around after it rains good, some found by digging to plant vegetables or flowers. LSU said they'd come help excavate but it's been over a year so i guess i get to do it by myself. I love the experimental archaeology too. I like old school stuff lol.
@@ChristaFree Oh man, the University letting you down like that, you need to get different academic people on board, otherwise, whatever you find, being merely an amature, you prob wont be believed until after your dead
@@Cheeseatingjunglista i don't care really. Folks can come look at the place themselves. Maybe i'll invite the local news. I bought the land several years ago, site unseen, and nobody had lived on it in at least 35 years. It was dense with trees and thorny bushes with vines as thick as my wrist. It didn't even have a street address and i had to go to the 911 center 3 years ago to get one. I didn't even know it was covered in mounds until i started clearing it. I just think how lucky am i? Lol i haven't even started yet. Just doing normal things, when i found all of these items. There's tons more, every inch of this land is covered. So many carved stones i couldn't plant without removing them from the dirt, because there wasn't enough dirt. An official excavation couldn't get all the stuff that's here. Walking down the ditch there's pottery sticking out from the dirt both sides. It's everywhere. I do wish there was an archaeologist to at least come give advice though. I found a book written in 1970 by a local that talked about a different mound, on the red river, being excavated in the 60's. That an archaeologist visited the area in the 80's and in addition to the two mounds right on the red river he said there's minimum 300 more that he saw. No archaeologist has ever looked at them up to today. Poverty point is only an hour away. After i finish planting my garden I'm going to start on a mound at the back of the land, not the highest one. Whether people believe me or not is irrelevant to me. Im old school. But it's exciting for sure! Too bad time team is in europe, it'd be great if they excavated lol.
@Christa Free That's pretty cool! Shame about LSU though - may be worth chasing up with them? Don't know all the arrangements for this kind of thing where you are, but if there's some equivalent to what us Brits would call a County Archaeologist they might be able to help with some kind of advice or assessment? Local amateur archaeology groups too, if they're good at what they do. Glad I'm not the only landscape fan! I always liked that Time Team didn't downplay its importance. (I gather Mick Aston was some sort of notable figure in landscape archaeology, so it kinda makes sense!). That and how they portray the proper approach to a dig despite their 3 day deadline - making sure every hole should answer a question, recording everything properly and precisely, all that stuff! (Their full site reports with Wessex Archaeology are worth a look too, if you don't mind a bit of time with Uncle Google 🙂)
Love the revival! Quite enjoying Gus as presenter and voiceover. Always love the original cast and experts but the new members to the team are great too!
I am descended from the Broughton Family..my Family from this area of Oxfordshire. Thanks for bringing this to us.. Nice to see some new faces, miss the Old team, and some familar faces still around. excited to see this.
Dr. Casely-Hayford has a quieter delivery than Tony Robinson does, but his excitement at each step shines through just as clearly. I'm loving these new episodes!! I'm hoping Tony, Phil, and Raksha can at least do flying visits or cameos, even if they can't be as involved as in the original series. It would be great just to see their faces, if only briefly.
Well . . . Gus is a curator and historian, whereas Tony is a classically-trained actor. It wouldn't surprise me to see a few familiar cameos as the series progresses.
@@MooPotPie The difference in background doesn't really have anything to do with it. Curator/historians can be just as excitable as anyone else. It's the excitement they both share that's important. And actually, having a presenter with a different demeanor is better than trying to get a carbon-copy of the original. The production staff made an excellent choice.
@@megelizabeth9492 Perhaps. However, we don't know how much he's worked to a camera before. The enthusiasm is there. It's just quieter. We shouldn't confuse a quiet demeanor with a lack of enthusiasm. Derek Pittman and Laurence Shaw provide a lot the fervor Tony Robinson had.
I'm not saying he's not enthusiastic about it. I'm more commenting about the actual delivery of the voiceover, since it feels like he's almost whispering, and kind of has a bit too much of a David Attenborough nature documentary vibe. I'm not asking for Tony level of energy, but it could do with a bit more liveliness.
This is quickly proving to be a worthy relaunch to me. When this show was first launched back in the early 1990s it was very much small-scale, and five university archeologists taking off in the back of a van for a weekends dig somewhere! It was low budget, rather crude, not well edited, and yet watchable due to the personalities involved and the educational aspect to it all. Time Team became big-budget over the years and much much more polished, and despite the niggling short-comings of this relaunch I do feel that it is a very worthy continuation of the series, and has a strong future (hopefully!). It inhabits a good halfway point between the first lowkey series' back in the early 90s, and what came in the years after. New narrator/presenter Gus is fast growing on me, the decision to keep the original music is a wise one, old faces like Carenza, Stuart and Helen are very welcome, and yet the show as a whole *does* suffer from the lack of a strong and assertive personality. That can be fixed though in time. Another area of concern I feel is that the editing doesn't leave the archeologists enough airtime to really talk and explain their reasoning and the finds they are making, this episode above is a good case in point. We could have done with a better background on the nature of the Lead-lined burial practices of this era, the sort of people who were buried in such a way, and some more time given to the archeologists speculation on the matter.... I don't know why these episodes are so short really, the material must be there to use, but there appears to be a scheduled limit of 30 minutes per episode, and that does serve to constrain the subject matter and the audiences ability to invest in the latest dig proper. Niggling while most of these points are they do come together to leave the viewer (me!) a little dissatisfied. But despite these points I do feel this *is* a successful and worthy relaunch. Address the void in a strong personality or two on the dig, edit the episodes to lend more exposition on the subject matter, and it will be about perfect!
These new episodes (although split in to three parts) are 50% longer than the original TV format version (including the commercial interludes) so happy days 😀
I think this is being done by very small post production team, I think what they have achieved, quality of production - vid, editing, music, etc - on the limited budget they had was superb. In an ideal world with C4 levels of cash, it might be possible but I think letting this format grow itself, organically with a fanatical fanbase egging them on, expect more to step forward from the existing team, all will be well
gosh, i hope this new series goes on for years. I'm not suggesting anything, but the world started going to Heck about the same time the original series went off the air. :D
I have to say the team is so in sync with one another. The chemistry I remember from the original Time Team flows through them. This episode is like a book you can’t put down. You want to read further to find out what is discovered!
That was a quick turn around to the second dig, you guys and gals have to get more sites at this rate. Give the people what they want! Lol. I'm playing, I'm just glad you are back to making episodes at all, love this show!
So great to see Time Team back. The first two digs have been interesting, though still lacking some of the chemistry and ”narrative" that made the original series so great. I imagine that is down to the production issues and the need for the new production/editing team to develop the "storytelling" skills that were so central to the old show. Obviously there will never be another Mick (or Tony for that matter), but hopefully the show (both the presenters and the people who write their script) will improve as they get more experience. Cant wait for the next episode!
The years have treated the members of the 'Pioneers' well. Excellent. It really doesn't seem, to me, as though they ever 'went away'. The new cast members seem to have settled in, and enhance this new series perfectly. I still expect Sir Tone to pop up sometime or other, in typically cunning fashion.
As a life long fan from my childhood to now brought me immense pleasure and of course the relaxation that this wonderful programme brings. The new host is fantastic and has retained the old feelings. My favourite show is back, get in!
Aww man, I was so caught up in the show that when they said end of day one, it hit me that I wasn’t watching a full dig at one go! Oh well, more chances to enjoy.
Just needed the time to make friends and fall in love with the work - Tony was the same when he started - first just the 'talent' - later in the trenches being rained on :P
I just learned about Time Team two days ago due to being laid up by COVID. After watching the older series for hours and hours and hours, I'm thrilled to see it rebooted with new technology on new sites!!
Such a delight to see this back! Well worth my support on Patreon. I love the fact with this new format they’re doing some of the geophys in advance. In the old shows it grated on my nerves that everyone stood around all morning the first day while geophys evaluated the site.
It is so good to have new Time Team episodes again. I’ll even wake up at 3am Australian EST time, so I can watch, as I’ve been impatiently waiting for days 2&3 since last weekend.
This was a fantastic, tantalising first day of three. Can’t wait to see days 2 & 3 . Gus and Natalie are a great presenting tag team and we love their addition to the time team gang. Keep it up !
I'm very happy to see that Time Team is back again, alive and kicking. And it's fun to see the old faces and some new ones as well. Even better, you've kept the cool old music that goes so well with the show.
SO glad to see the team together digging for new treasures! I was fortunate enough to discover the classic Time Team episodes only just 2 years ago, and it is so wonderful to see familiar faces for this new season. (I am so happy to see PROFESSOR Stewart!) (For those who grew up watching the shows in the UK...I'm from America, and WISH we had access to this show in the 90s!)
At around 23:30 I was hoping Gus would have said, “But this is the last wall Matt will find on this dig. For the next 24 hours, Matt will be building a Roman Villa using only tools from that era.”
@@stitch3163 I have faith he can stand it, I worry instead what it says about us, wanting to watch the same bloke undergoing bizarre experiments for decades, surely he deserves a rest, pass the baton even?
@@Cheeseatingjunglista oh he deserves a rest, no doubt about it. He has flogged himself as a lay brother, for goodness sake. Not to mention slave day. It truly was intended as a callback that the fervent Time Team fans would understand.
Another great episode. Brilliant seeing Neil back and enthusiastic as always. These episodes have been a welcome relief with a pandemic and war going on, making you feel like you’re welcoming an old friend home. 👍😃
Another intriguing start to the programme. Most of the clips had been released before, but now they have been edited by the wonderful Emily, they begin to provide a much more coherent narrative and a better idea of the layout and potential of the site, both for the villa and the castle. Looking forward to the development of the story to its climax over the next two days. Really great fun to be able to participate so closely with everyone on site. Congratulations all.
I LOVE this house!! As a 66 year old California native, the only time I've ever seen anything so old was upon my visit to York Castle. We have nothing this old here, nowhere near that really, apart from a few rock paintings and drawings. I LOVE the centuries of wear on the set of stone steps. And people are living in there, and keeping it alive!! Well done!
Fantastic stuff. I am warming to Gus, who is gaining in confidence and I like that he is not trying to be Tony. Tony was brilliant, but there is nothing to be gained from trying to imitate him. Gus brings curiosity, fascination with the human connection and warmth. More Natalie though please. The archaeology is the star though, and this looks fascinating. Can't wait for eps 2 and 3.
Oh wow! My family is related to the Broughtons whom this castle is named after. Love getting to see it like this! My grandmother Broughton would be thrilled.
Absolutely blown away by this first day of that intriguing dig. Chills ran down my spine hearing the first lines of intro from Dr Gus!! And the excitement of Nataly and Helen! Can't wait for day 2.
Gotta love this new format you guys have gone with. It feels like old Time Team with a modern spin on things and that is exactly what I think a lot of people were hoping for when they heard Time Team was coming back. Shame you couldn't get Tony or Phil back but the new hosts are really good and Phil has his own work he's been doing so it's understandable
An interesting site and I wonder how many changes to the model there will be before the results of the investigation are known? The spread of the materials seems quite extensive so I suspect a lot of hard work will happen in tbe different trenches. The joy of Time Team is the good natured camaraderie of the team and that is still evident and makes the programme extra special to me. I have spent many hours watching the old series and seeing things that I hadn't noticed before, now a new series and I'm still hooked lol. Take care and stay safe please everyone Mary-Ellen UK
Incredibly well produced. I was expecting the production quality to suffer without a terrestrial TV channel partner but that is not the case. Great to see members of the original cast still present and still enthusiastic. I strongly believe that the UK want's to view Time Team content so I'm surprised it has taken this long to return despite the high costs per episode.
That was a very promising first day, I think - and in classic Time Team fashion, finds in the ground didn't line up with the first assumptions :) I'm really looking forward to seeing how those confident first villa drawings and models will change over the coming days! And the lead-lined grave is going to be very exciting! This new episode is a cracker already! :)
Love watching Time Team after The Perspectives program about cultural artifacts & thefts vs preservation/war booty & the big museums! Time Team works well doing digs on private (often significant locations) over a few days because the UK has had nearly every inch of productive soil unearthed so they know SO much already about the variety if artifacts they might find. Digging this way gives access to the unaccessible plus adds to knowledge of their cultural past without being war booty!
Ok, so I remember watching this channel last year, talking about Time Team coming back. Just seen in my notifications that indeed, it has returned. Sound effects and all. New presenter is great too. The whole format is great. Maybe less voice over from the presenter would be good. But, wow, it's back. Thank you very much Time Team. I remember watching the videos last year and hearing of the challenges that lay ahead of you. Brilliant.
Thrilled to have Time Team back together again with lots of new faces but plenty of the original cast too. I love the split between good old fashioned techniques, alongside the high tech ones as it creates a great balance across the digs i think. One of my all time favourite programmes so can't wait to see where these digs take us
Great first day guys. Looking forward to see how the other two days play out. Also I was delighted to see Prof Susannah Libscomb. A mix of beauty and intelligence 😃

It is utter brilliant. Great pace and flow, lovely presenters, great archeology. Special compliments for Matt and Neill, ever growing, knowledgeable and no pretence. Pure nerdy awesomeness!
The pandemic introduced me to Time Team. To see it come back from the ashes with old and new faces who gel so well together has been inspirational, and downright astonishing! This site is going to be another cracking dig, I'm excited for day 2 and finding out who the owner of this villa is.
I am delighted Time Team is back. My favourite archaeological programme of all time ! Great to see members of the original team, all still as enthusiastic and informative as ever. A big welcome to the new specialists/ presenters. I wish you all the best with the Digital Time Team endeavour. I am so happy now. 😎😎

Wtf are you on about?

@@marysweeney7370 i miss Tony and I think the original format was great. I’m not an academic so Tony’s approach made this American tune in all the time! Now it’s , well…Academic.
So glad Time Team is back! This show is always so engaging and calming to me. Got me through some very tough times.
It took me through my longcovid days very well. The calming effect is immediate.
LOVE that Time Team is back, PLZ bring Tony and Phil back as special guest for an episode please.
It is wonderful to see that “young” Matt has actually made a profession of being an actual digging archeologist Hatcher than being retired to mostly academia and looking at Time Team nostalgically as having had great fun in his specialty once!
I think there is a chance that Matt might become Phil over time:). Just needs to develop a bit more passion towards iron age and flintstones:).
Ahh, lovely Helen! She's hardly aged a day since the last series!
Great to see her again!
Great to see the band back together. Still have the chemistry that made the show a success from the start. Great show for education and entertainment. I have watched and re-watched every episope but this one.
this show is great to see again. I just expect to see tony running around the field and phil with his dirty hat and great laugh.

Dig 1 of 2022 was so reminiscent of the Fogou excavation from Series 3 episode 1 - but with so much more brilliant information! 💯
R.I.P: Robin Bush, Mick Aston and Victor Ambrus. 😭
If you look up fougou wikipedia says 2 have been excavated by time team.

@@georgielancaster1356 Me neither
I had to exercise extreme restraint; it was difficult to wait for all three episodes!
Where is Raksha and why does the presenter have to breathe so much air?
Nice to see Neil back. He was always great on the original series
I was expecting something to be missing but after watching the last episodes there is nothing missing. The transition was seamless. Others not on were thought about but not missed. I became a patron. I've been watching since it's first episode decades ago.
im a new fan of the show, finding it during lockdowns, and im completely hooked! i scour the internet looking for episodes that i've missed
I do think he could use a bit more enthusiasm in his delivery though.
Huge that you're breaking this down into 3 30 minute episodes. Love that format. You get a more comprehensive deep dive.
I love this new 3 day release format...like actually living the 3 day dig!
I agree I would like to see longer episodes, one per day but that is a niggle. Just fantastic that it's back in any form

Yup! The more support we get on Patreon the more sites we can do!
Love the new Time Team! I like the new format where each day is it's own video. More time allotted for each day!
Gus is getting into the role he must live as a Time Teamer. Let him get there! He seems genuinely interested.
Just needed the time to make friends and fall in love with the work - Tony was the same when he started - first just the 'talent' - later in the trenches being rained on :P
Except, all his narration is voice-over AFTER the dig. Unfortunate he doesn't understand it well enough to do it on-site.

Such a delight to see this back! Well worth my support on Patreon. I love the fact with this new format they’re doing some of the geophys in advance. In the old shows it grated on my nerves that everyone stood around all morning the first day while geophys evaluated the site.

Well done!
Time was the best thing on channel 4 , I loved it and still watch all the series .

Dr Gus can be the narrator to my lifetime. A fabulous, relaxing melodious voice. Thanks always for Time Team. ❤️

Excellent job, again. Really enjoyed this and can't wait for tomorrow's instalment.
