- Bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff is one of the world's leading lieder and oratorio singers. A victim of Thalidomide, he does not take on operatic roles. Much of this programme is devoted to footage of Quasthoff in rehearsal and performance. He is seen meticulously preparing for a recording of Schubert songs; working with composer Aribert Reimann on a particularly difficult piece, written specially for him; and singing music by Bach, Brahms, Mahler and Loewe. Thoughtful, intelligent and charming, Quasthoff also talks about his life, his career and his plans for the future.

And he’s also such a funny and entertaining guy 😂 I met him once in a pub in Hannover.
His autobiography is really great. The funniest part is when he was invited with a couple of other young promising artists to perform on a cruise 🚢 ship. He and the other musicians partied hard every night 😂 Except one, young pianist Evgeni Kissin. His mother and his piano teacher followed him everywhere and he wasn‘t allowed to do anything but eat and sleep and play the piano. So Thomas and one other guy made a plan, they kidnapped Evgeni and took him to one of the bars on the ship to let him have some fun. 😊
A Musician is the man first . He has it all and had the ear and intelligence to give and create rolls in leader and oratorio ! His masterclasses and interviews tell all of us what we need to live and for life !He is full of life and questioning curiosity , passion . His first teacher said at 13 it was obvious "he was music "
I discovered this amazing talent many years ago completely by happenstance. Thank God for happenstance. His total control is awe inspiring. Beautiful voice.

Geschätzter Herr Quasthoff mir wurde als Kontergankind Uch eine schöne Stimme geschenkt, so ist es mir doch möglich trotz meiner Einschränkungen den Menschen (und mir) Freude zu schenken. Like many in the US, my first experience with him was via the 60 Minutes piece long ago. I was absolutely awestruck, and that finale had me tears. Such immense power and control and beauty. I've carried those moments with me ever since. I wish I knew that piece he was singing. Why on earth won't CBS do the right thing and post it here? What's to be gained or lost by stashing it away in a vault?

@@EmilyGloeggler7984 He wouldn’t mind me saying. A very fine baritone active now in early music, Sumner Thompson. You should check out his TH-cam clips. Quasthoff also helped make him into a beautiful Lieder singer.

O yes, Thalidomide harmed him very strongly, and made his life very difficult in many aspects, as he himself recognizes. So, he is a victim of Thalidomide, as many, thousands of other people were, even many of them died due to this special disease, Thousand of children dead due to this harm there would be considered victims, or not? This makes his life even more valuable and should lead people to respect and appreciate even more his life and achievements. The consideration and protection devoted to people with disabilities should not lead to deny reality, because it is completely useless
