"Historic Moment": Barbara Ransby on the Symbolism & Shortcomings of Kamala Harris's Nomination

Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepted the Democratic presidential nomination Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, making history as the first Black woman and first person of South Asian descent to be nominated for president by a major party. Her ascent to the top of the Democratic Party comes just over a month after President Biden dropped out of the race. We play excerpts from her speech and speak with historian Barbara Ransby, who says that while the nomination "breaks a barrier," it's important to note the "contradictions," as well. "Yes, it breaks barriers. Yes, it is a historic moment in a certain sense. But we have to also talk about the gravity of this moment and the politics that Kamala Harris brings with her," says Ransby, who criticizes Harris for her pro-Israel policy and for refusing to let Palestinian Americans address the convention. "I was glad to hear her mention the suffering of the Palestinian people, but, of course, it didn't ring true. It rang a little bit hollow, because the Biden administration could stop much of that suffering by not sending 2,000-pound bombs and $3 billion a year to the Israeli government."

American bombs have been used to indiscriminately carpet bomb densely populated areas of Gaza. AIPAC, the most powerful PAC in the US gives large donations to politicians of both parties to ensure we always support Isreal, even when they commit war crimes such as torture and ethnic cleansing.

I agree with the guest's last statement. Why are Palestinian rights to existence and statehood always treated like an afterthought? I'm so sick and tired of hearing that Israel has a right to exist and to defend itself. The EXACT SAME RIGHTS should be accorded to the Palestinians. I would argue that the zionist state never had a right to be created in the first place. It wasn't a land without people as we were told and the crimes that occurred during its founding has brought nothing but conflict to the region. I have no issue with the Torah at all, I read both the old and the new Testaments. But the Talmud is another story, which is what the Israelis follow, it's a horror once you look into it. Absolute doctrines of demons and precepts of men. If the creation of this state had given equal footing to everyone that lived there and the Jews who needed a place of safety had assimilated within it, not taken it over with stealing, killing, destruction, displacement and lying. Then I would be fine with it. But the cruelty, the stealing, killing, destruction and oppression of others, even their less than real humans of everyone else doctrine, in their Pharisees written Talmud 500 years after Christ's life, death and resurrection, gives them permission, free reign, to do whatever they want to "gentiles" or subhumans. It's beyond sickening and frankly quite frightening once you get into it.

I was trying to articulate the "representation versus values" point the other day - I should have just quoted Dr. Ransby because she summed it up perfectly here. I hope Kamala wins from a historical perspective but she is still a corporate establishment Democrat who is toeing the clapped-out war hawk lines that we've heard far too many times. Kamala does not get it when it comes to Israel. You cannot in one breath talk about human rights and in another breath talk about the rights of the state of Israel. The state of Istrael is not a country dedicated to human rights. Kamala also makes Iran and Iran-backed forces the enemy. She will get nowhere in her possible administration seeing any country with such a narrow vision. Iran like Israel does not protect human rights. For her to Champion one and villify the other when both are similar in different ways, is not dealing even-handedly with each. She has already stated in her speech she will not be impartial, which would be a continuation of the failed policies of the preceding administrations. Iran did not become Israel's neighbor. The current administration is asking for a cease fire. However, the DNC is also a time to celebrate. I am old enough to remember the 9/11 attacks here and the twenty years war then President Bush put us in. No one wants to see more wars. For four days the democrats wanted to celebrate having a candidate that is surging forward does not mean that America is taking her eye off the suffering in both the Middle East and Ukraine. Iran is also an agitator. Things are not so easy. I agree, it was a missed opportunity to have someone speak that represents the Palestine people.

We have had a lot of the most important elections in our lifetime, and nothing has changed, especially for foundational black Americans.
The Dems finally took on the Republican playbook. Its unified no matter what. In the past you could have dissent but now the parties use any ideas outside the centrist capitalist middle, against one another. That said, you could argue that the party is congealing, reaching consensus. Take away the Palastine, its hard to say the party hasnt moved a bit to the left and successfully kept its centrist members.
