Monterey/Carmel area is my hometown. The Fishwife is very popular with Locals. The calamari appetizer (slender breaded steaks) with homemade sauce is like nowhere else, my teenagers would eat it every day if they could. We get it to go 1 order per person and sit at Asilomar beach for an impromptu picnic. It’s so close to the beach it’s still piping hot after you park and walk. I like this restaurant because they don’t often drown their seafood in a huge portion of starchy carbs. You can actually make some really healthy choices. The Carmel Cheese shop has been there forever and is an absolute necessary stop for any gourmet “foodies” you can taste cheeses (for free) from all over the world that you cannot get from other cheese mongers and if you like buy some to bring back to your home or hotel. There is a French Bakery: Parker-Lusseau that makes outstanding croissants and if you have ever been to France and eaten the real thing you know that is very uncommon in most parts of U.S. Carmel Belle has really great food to buy to go eat on the beach or wherever. The salads are so fresh & bright flavors- high quality ingredients, from scratch dressing. They have tables if you want to dine in.

@@TravelwithNJSteveandSue we just tried a spot a few days ago that was outstanding- The Red House Cafe in Pacific Grove. Another great place for Calamari Steak Appetizer for only $15. The Snapper was very good as was the homemade soup. Lovely Apricot pie for dessert that wasn’t too sweet. Charming atmosphere- we love sitting on the porch & the back table has plexiglass protection from wind but the inside is cozy & intimate as well. Fantastic service.
Born & raised in CA. If you try In & Out please know that while some people have an obsession with this place there are definitely way better burgers in every city. It’s better than McDonald’s but most bistro’s and (non-chain) grill restaurants are going to have way better burgers. Habit Burger is a CA based chain that is MUCH better than In & Out.

The little shopping center where Baan Thai is has a bunch of good restaurants. Baan Thai is one of my favorites but you can’t go wrong with any of the spots there.
