Love Cioppino, Steve and Sue! I also believe we had it right there at the Sandbar! I know Kathy and I have been back to Monterrey several times during our lives together. (I was stationed there before knowing her) I know we ate there, but don't remember for sure what we ate. Love other seafood too and the Fish House looked wonderful too! We also love generous portions. Enjoyed pizza night. Looking forward to part two! Thanks for bringing back the memories.

I am a local, and I think Phil's fish market in Castroville has excellent ciopinno. A short drive from Monterey. The restaurant has been featured on Food netwook, BBC travel etc.

Sandbar & Grill is a movie scene shooting location for Clint Eastwood's 1971 "Play Misty for Me". Stumbled upon it the other day with my son on our day roadtrip to Monterey. It really is the locals' place to eat. But go early if you don't want a long wait for a table.

LOL...locals would never go to the restaurant at Lover's Point. I've walked past the CA Seltzer Company hundreds of times...never looked like it was open! Locals go to Gianni's for pizza (I suspect a lot of tourists go there, too).

    • @TravelwithNJSteveandSue

32$ for seafood stew means it's still a tourist destination. Also, you should have ordered the sand dabs.

As a local, Sandbar is a tourist trap, most locals would not go there. California Seltzer, a newer tourist trap. Overpriced, not local food AT ALL, and only open for times tourists would be in town. If you want local food, try something open more than 3 times weekly. As another commenter mentioned, Gianni's is the best local pizza period. This was hard to watch, although I was rooting for y'all.

Monterey Fish House cioppino is the best. Lived here 20 years, and never been to the Sandbar. My go to at MFH is the calamari parmesan! Also, possibly the best calamari, too! MFH has parking right next door - you parked in the wrong place. And they have a snickerdoodle cake that is to die for!!! For pizza, Giannis or Pizza My Heart. That seltzer place is a tourist trap.
