I swear, whoever writes the little commentary in the corner is the best. Always so clever and hilarious. I would kill for an alternate take on this with the Murderbot/Hawk mission.

I love Chris so much, his voices and creature noises are simply amazing. Sometimes he annihilates my ear drums but its worth it.

Jared is ABSOLUTLY the 'leader' of the group. He's the most level headed and the most stable minded. If anyone is fit to be the leader of the group, it's him.
Yes Jared is the most level headed and most stable minded, he most certainly is the most qualified to be the leader of the group, but IS he the leader of the group? No. His character isn't charismatic enough or stubborn enough to bend the others to his will. Evelyn or Strix usually do their own crazy thing and end up dragging the party along with them (eg. befriending/ taming the owlbear, running away from Eesaac, etc.)
(I know it's way too late to reply now, but I'm just gonna do this anyway for my own peace of mind)

I like to think that Diath doesn't have to bend them to his will. Usually he lets them do what they want, since each of them is super distinct and focused on their own priorities. He watched out for them from the shadows, but is pretty lax about their quirks. But when the chips are down and none of them have any idea what to do, Diath is usually the one everyone lets take over. And the fact they willingly defer to him is what makes him the "leader."
Krakiolit yeah but thats what happens in any party. Diath always steps up when times get tough and bring them togther while the rest argue. Hes the one they need not the one they deserve.

Lightning Lance Maybe once in a while a naked dwarf will run by screaming? Other lock themselves up and scream for ingredients? Some dried out husks of dwarves are found, without any blood remaining...

I just like how Harshnag gets this really glorified image of Diath. Considers him the leader-figure, trusts him to pick doors of unnatural size for him and even suggests the possibility of a solo recon-mission. I suppose he is the most competent. Or perhaps "professional" is the more poignant word here. Alot of people walk into D&D with this idea of being the really crazy and hilarious one and I had that mindset starting off too, but I've found a great respect towards playing the straight-man routine. Not instigating all of the antics, but rather reacting to the insanity that most of D&D devolves to.
I tend to see that the straight-man character is usually a result of veteran players. new players tend to want to get the crazy and hilarious character out of their system and then they'll eventually move on to a more serious and deep character. And given that Jared is the most veteran waffle-crew member who has been playing Diath since he was a teen it makes sense

I suppose so. I seem to be getting into that mojo recently (if only because my current group is outpacing me with their insanity), but mostly because the straight man is among my favorite archetypes in fiction. Reality-anchors, stoics among clowns and overall reactors to a world devoid of sense.
And for Jared, not only is he veteran-player, but veteran-DM as well. That adds a certain amount of context and can alter your behavior as a player, having been on the other side of that
I think that a lot of the funny stuff either just happens, or comes from the interaction between players (also counting the DM). And to be funny from time to time, you don't need to be a goofball in game, as shown in the amount of imo pretty hilarious moments Jared brought to the table even with Diath being the "responsible adult", as Anna -so eloquently- put it.
The thing is even a comedy needs to have a decent story and good characters to stay entertaining and you can quickly run into problems when all of your protagonists are the comic relief at once.
So with Diath being the straight part of the waffle crew, I think we are just experiencing a veteran who has, over the years, developed a feeling for the game, fir the storytelling and fir the social level of it, and is therefore good at keeping the player side of the storytelling straight and functional enough to stay fun so the humorous characters can work off of that, just like Chris has shown his DM skills with the way he gave Paultin his own sub story to develop him beyond the drunken idgaf-dude and get him to fit into the party dynamic better, since as much shit as Nate got over that, I think Paultin just didn't work well with the rest, until Chris provoked some opportunities for Nate to make interesting decisions that would develop Paultin, but still left Nate in control of where the character would be going.
Basically, the party didn't make Paultin shine at first, so the DM fixed that, and Nate took the character into a direction where he still is close with the parties, but also clashes in some ways, and since then he's been the counter to Diath imo, which improved the party dynamic immensely. Basically, everybody fills a role, and most good groups of protagonists in fiction in general benefit from having a Diath.
I was unfortunate to be a part of a party FULL of weirdo pcs that didn't take things seriously. Even with my character, a bard, being decently jovial, he knew how to be serious when need be.
Diath helps with the comedy by being the straight-man too, I find it a lot better that while everyone is doing their stuff he's just trying to keep everyone alive and has had the most crap happen to him in the process.
I loved everyone tonight, but every now and then I would listen for the sass and chaos from Nate and murder bot and I missed it.

i just started watching this group not too long ago on a marathon watch to get to this point. I think they the group is great and they are having fun with the game not making it too serious. this is the types of games I like. i love that you can still have a serious storyline and goof off Chris is also humble enough to note when he makes mistakes which is awesome as well

You know th9ings go really down when Chris just gives the Party what they need. My guess for this Episode is that, since Nathan is not here, things will go really south again and maybe half the Party gets lost or captured... or they just get into a really heavy fight.

blatantarrogance x Some players don't really consider looting corpses and some characters are specifically opposed to taking from the dead. Considering Evelyn's general disposition, I'd assume it's a mix of both.

besides if its a question of morals , she took an axe out of a tree when the owners dead body was laying there, and took the warm robes off of an orc that was tied to a tree. so i think she has proven that she can do it.

The amount damage evelin has missed from not adding her strength bonus or using the wrong weapon/enchanting the wrong weapon in the crypt. . Or not using magic weapon on diaths daggers vs monsters resistant to non magic weapons could probably have slain a dragon or two by now.

Which sorcerous origin does Stryx have? She seems to be lacking certain things, such as unarmored AC and elemental affinity, or alternatively wild magic rolls. Not noticing any of the Unearthed Arcana stuff either.

I think she is using Favoured Soul currently which is some new variant that gives sorcerer and cleric spells. As of this ep though, I think she is wild magick but they never roll on the chart for it. lol

Really loving this series, but the audio's really quiet. I have to max out the volume to be able to hear anyone. Some boosting of the volume in post would be wonderful. Just my two cents' worth.

It's extremely distracting that everyone seemed to think Jared rolled a 3 on his stealth. 1) even if he wasn't proficient, his Dex mod makes that literally impossible... but with expertise he has a +11 if you were wondering 2) Jared's reaction to the roll said very clearly that he rolled well (a 19) and 3) he very clearly said 30. To be fair Jared never corrected anyone, but it was pretty annoying that everyone, characters and white text included, was all 'lol he got a 3!!1! not even the rogue can stealth :P'.

It makes sense to not bring weapons into a meeting with the leader of the people you are treating with and she also had her hands full, literally, with the owlbear. I didn't think it was a bad decision.
Lucas Blackstone No it doesn't. Unless said leader orders you to leave your weapons there is no logical reason to leave them. Notice Diath was still fully armed.

In what universe could Diath get a 3 on Stealth? It's Dex based and his Dex mod is +4.
slate613 Probably gave his dice roll instead of the total. A seven is nowhere near enough to be stealthy unless the other character really screws up their roll. Passive perception totally spots that.
He rolled a 30, the problem is no one heard him correctly and for whatever reason he never corrected them. He has a +11 to stealth with his expertise (20 dex is a +5, prof. bonus is a +3, doubled for expertise is +6, total of +11).

I've thought the same thing many a time. After a deeper look, though, RAW would make it less than optimal, given Diath's low Strength score. He's proficient in it (counting as longsword AND shortsword for that purpose) but it's still a longsword for other purposes.
The Great and Powerful Perkins could overlook that in favor of how freaking awesome it would be (and 'cause Diath would really benefit from a magical weapon...and 'cause Jared would certainly enjoy the hell out it), but it seems that notion got nixed at the Sun Blade's introduction.
Makes me sad, really.
The Sunblade is a finesse weapon also, so it would be best served in Diath's hands since he would use it pretty much every attack as compared to Paultin using it once every other adventure.
Somehow I've missed that "finesse property" line every time I've read the description.

valandrave It wasn't meant for Diath, Madame Eva's card for Paultin was about the sword. Besides, though Diath could use the Sun Sword with proficiency, he prefers shortswords and the Sun Sword is a longsword.

David Ferguson Diath didn't see any other option in that area. They don't want to commit evil acts if they don't absolutely have to, they are still fundamentally a good-aligned party who have just had to make some tough decisions.

I haven't seen their stats in Volo's but if they are like the ones from 2e those Yak People should have destroyed them. :D
they actually made a lot of creatures more easy in 5th edition. ive had to modify some of them just to make it interesting.

ehh? i always figured that he just rolled for diath's stats when he made him years and years ago and just reuses the character as is when he starts a new campaign. the character stats on the screen just shows their stats from the beginning of Curse of Strahd i don''t know if they ever update the stats to match their character sheets.

1:28:44 No Anna, that's not something to joke about. You're 38 episodes in. Each episode is about 2 hours long. That's roughly 76 hours of D&D. You should know to add your Strength Modifier to attacks by now. That should be automatic at this point. It frustrates people that you don't seem to even care to remember.

It straight up drives me crazy that Anna hardly ever remembers to attack twice or add damage the right way. Her character is such a beast.
Okay, I'm not even a half hour into this, and Evelyn is really pissing me off. My current character is a half-orc monk, in service to Lathander, via the Sun Souls Monestary.
So, with that in mind, how, in even the most forgiving of all possible fucks, is Evelyn's overt greed not a violationof every possible oath she could have taken? It's not enough that she accepted a curse and brow-beat Diath into becoming a werewolf because puppies. Now, she has to actively disrespect the faith of LITERALLY everyone she meets, and extort payment out of people, for doing things that any Paladin worthy of the title would have requested to do for NOTHING! (And, yes, bracers made of fucking gold is a payment. It's gold, after all.)

Net Spectre Fair enough. I admit to a general lack of knowledge about Paladin spells. But, remembering that Lathander is a LG deiry, I maintain that she is an absolute failure, when it comes to upholding anything even resembling the ethics of Lathander.
Net Spectre And, franklt, Chris is failing, as a DM, for not calling her on it. At this juncture, Strix is acting more like a follower of Lathander than Evelyn ever has. Deeds matter far more than words, and Evelyn's deeds are base, crude, greedy, and not fitting with the principles of a Paladin.
Net Spectre In Dungeons and Dragons, Good and Evil are directly defined as Altruism and Self Interest.
Upon reaching Citadel Adbar, Evelyn's first act was ro buy new clothing..... with the party's food and supply budget. Actions speak far louder than words, and that was an act of overt self interest, while not giving a damn about the consequences. Simply put, Evelyn's actions place her alignment at Neutral Evil.
Chris should do like my dm and not allow extra attacks after you end your turn, I don't know how many times I've missed my sneak attack (many of which would've killed said enemy) because I forgot to roll them
