I was in the USA completing a Greyhound Bus tour in 1973 when his death as announced following an accident. I bought his album and have loved his music ever since. I still pay the vinyl album all these years later. Such a sad loss, as he produced so many wonderful songs in such a short career. Gone too soon. Thank you for posting this.
Almost painfully exquisite, I thought I was a half decent guitarist, but jeez, the world needs more musicians like you - just impeccable. Peace and love from the U.K.
None better than you! Great song. Great teaching. I was 13 when this came out and Croce was awesome at this time. This sing takes me back to such a special time.
Your referenced article is worth reading, it's spot on about Jim being ok and Maury being a genius. I grew up in the 60's and remember when I first heard them both play I recognized the guitar parts I wanted to play were the ones Maury played. They were melodic and I loved to Travis pick, it was fun and came naturally for me. I could pick out some of the melody but Maury's parts were in the background and hard to pick out. Our son played baseball and we were at game in Natchitoches, Louisiana and I remembered this was where their plane crashed, such a sad thought. So fast forward several years ago I was trying to find someone who focused on playing Maury's parts but didn't find anything. I found an article about his sister and through an email I wrote her asking her if there was anything published or available to learn his style. To my surprise she wrote me back and said the family was thinking about doing something. Thanks for doing this and recognizing Maury's talent. Perhaps there is a lesson or two on creating similar styles and melodies.
Thanks man - can’t put into words how much your efforts are appreciated. Don’t know who you are, but it must be a kick knowing there are no better deconstructions on TH-cam ;-). Best ear, best timing, best explanations, astounding attention to detail. Just...thanks.
Loved this song from the day I heard it so many years ago…really cemented Jim Croce as a premiere singer-songwriter. I really appreciate the depth to which you have learned/taught this to so many aspiring musicians. Time for me to learn and play to dedicate to the ones I love. Thanx again!!
@6:23 I am able to play that F chord using my pinky to bar the D G and B strings. My pinky bends similarly to your ring finger. Great lesson! I would still like to see a lesson for Jim Croce's Operator done by you. Thanks for your excellent instruction!
I just bar the whole fret with my index finger and bar the d g b with my ring finger. To me, that's easier then to try to pin my index finger on the e string. Same result.
I had learn this song on my own a few years ago and stopped playing it cause I found it a little hard to play on some parts BUT that's because I wasn't playing the parts correctly. This video has put me on the right path. Ironically, I find it easier to sing to Maury's part lol. Thanks for this great video. To me, this is one of the most (if not the most beautifully composed acoustic guitar song ever). It's simply a masterpiece.
You are the best. Thank you so much. If I had some money I'd send you some of it. This is one song I love but it is at the upper limit of my ability. I'm still trying to get my fingers to go there... Keep up the fantastic tutorials. Like I said, you are the best on the internet, bar none.
Yep! Thanks a ton for this. Ive just gotten the lead phrasing for "OPERATOR" down. No rest for the weary. My musical partner insists and being retired I happily accept this new work load. You make that even better. THANKS AGAIN!!!
Thanks Michael. I put a huge amount of time and effort into making these videos. I like to keep them free for all of those that just can't afford to pay, but if you're getting something from them and have the means please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html
Great great stuff Andy (I commented on part 1). So keeping it short here One other thing that always helps me that’s not often mentioned in tutorials (this or most every other), is the time signature The songs in 3/4. (Or maybe 6/8). But I always count 123, or 123123 while playing it
once you get going on this, this part is easier to play than part 1. there was some rough spots but playing the full barre chords was the way to get through it until it was smoothed out and memorized, hope you do some more stuff from them, the love of my life used to sing these to me
It would be super awesome if you could make Maury's version that you recorded available so I can play the Jim version along side of it while I practice. I'd love to see if my Jim version aligns properly. PS --I'm willing to pay for that copy. I more than appreciate the gift you provide to people. I have no idea how to message on TH-cam, but of you do, please send me one and I'll make arrangements.
Hello from Scotland. Great tutorial as usual, I'm getting there slowly even though I've been playing for about 10 years. However it would be nice if you could say the note numbers for some chords instead of just the chord name, had to rewind it a few times. Thanks!
This tutorial is wonderful, I can play this song very well now! Anyway I'll make an observation about the end. I'll write in Spanish to do it better, hopefully someone will understand what I'll explain.
i've been playing guitar for years but i cannot turn my wrist like you mention in part 1 to play the Am chord for the intro part. I guess I'm not able to apply enoughpressure with my pinky and go as far as 4th fret.. any tips on what practice methods i can do to improve and master this technique? thanks in advance

Well done sir. Another song by Jim Croce that I would love to see you teach would be "Operator".
I love this guy , no pre intro to change intro intro. Blah blah. Blah. Rite to the music
5.50 unreal

This is definitive. Superb production…lighting, sound quality, and the instruction is spot on. Great musicianship to boot. Bravo!

Such as sweet acoustic tune, & as accurate as it gets, as always. Priceless post !

Just wrecked my weekend. I was going to go skiing at Sunshine mountain but now I have to stay home and practice this. Bummer....
Best guitar teacher on TH-cam imo
