    The purpose or goal is to design an engine that, when it fails for any reason, can contain the failure, blow it out the back-side to reduce damage to the fuselage (main body of the aircraft where the passengers/your amazon package are).

      That's not quite true. Engines are designed to keep the effects of most likely failures 'contained' which means no part of the engine can escape radially (falling out the back is allowed). This is what you see with bird and ice injestion, and the single blade separation. No engine is designed to keep disc failures and multi-blade failures contained. These types of failures are deemed to be unlikely. But they do occasionally happen.

    The look on the engineers faces when the blade separates, they jumped, and you could see them actually wince just the slightest bit. You have to imagine just how many hours they put in attempting to build something that will NOT fly apart like that, and watch as one actually does. In contrast, they literally built this motor to fail just like what you saw happen. Again, you can see the relief on thier faces when it failed as they had planned it to. Amazing.

    Spent nearly 30 years in Marine Corps aviation working on jet engines. Never saw one throw a compressor blade, but we had one once in an A-4M at MCAS El Toro circa 1982, that had a 2nd stage turbine nozzle guide vane (the fixed vanes before the turbine) fail and go into the turbine. Sheared the outer inch or so off of all the turbine blades. The pieces exited the turbine case and side of the aircraft at about the 10 o'clock position. Fortunately this was on takeoff roll and just after brake release. The other fortunate happenstance is that it didn't spit the debris at the 5-7 o'clock direction, which would have been right into the wing fuel tank. Aircraft was repaired.
    Replaced plenty of engines after ingesting a bird. Smelly.

To my knowledge, all turbine and rocket engines have them because nothing else is strong, consistent and balanced enough to withstand those forces.
      I don’t even have to look to know there’s probably a mixed origin for the parts found in many top performing products because being competitive means you take your advantages wherever you can find them (right, wrong or indifferent).

    This is how monopoly or duopoly is created. This should be abolished and let the free market decide if this has any value for an average traveller. Driving a car is riskier and more deadly and yet everyone chooses to drive cars. This means these regulations are fictive and they only serve to destroy the competition. Had there been competition in this market I am sure we would have already had dozens of more safer and more capable engines.

      Correct On 4 November 2010, Quantas Flight 32 an Airbus A380, suffered an uncontained failure in one of its four Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines.

    • @edwardwilcox6606
      @edwardwilcox6606 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it was something as small as an oil pipe fracturing which was obviously addressed. If you look at the hours these Trent 900`s are doing it`s incredibly reliable, but as with anything mechanical there will always be failures. All makes of engines have uncontained events, non of them including GE & Pratt are immune.

    • @retinaquester
      @retinaquester 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edwardwilcox6606 Well this was not something small. Yes it was a oil leak. But the plane (and engine) was just a little over 2 years old. Had not accumulated a lot of hours and got damaged for 139 milion Dollars! The failure with the Oil Stub Pipe is specific for the Trend 900 engine. After world wide inspection 53 engine had to be taken out of service. So this was not great for Rolls Royce reputation.

    • @edwardwilcox6606
      @edwardwilcox6606 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@retinaquester Just a ridiculous reply. Firstly I said a small part was the fault, any uncontained failure is catastrophic. When an engine goes it`s a complete lottery as to where the parts end-up, some people have been killed sitting in their seats from turbine debris. An engine can go at anytime it doesn`t always follow that it has to have accumulated lot`s of hours, it`s also not unusual for engines to be taken out of service, the authorities have to take safety measures. The Qantas Trent 900 failure was stupidly over hyped because of the damage to the plane & the GE, P&W fan-boys, some media seemed to take delight in trying to diminish RR`s reputation ( still goes on after 9 years! ). Do your research & checkout all the uncontained failures over the last ten years, any one of them could have ended badly ( at least one did ) had the shrapnel gone in a different direction, it`s just the luck of the draw. Finally checkout the hours the Trent 900 is reliably accumulating, it`s huge & it will continue to do so for many years hence.
