I have a Chinese 10 dollar plastic one from family dollar no less Scotty, Ive had it for 4 years and it still works fine I have inflated my bike and truck tires many many times I must say that is a attractive buy though.
Flame And it was free, mine was 10 dollars almost free and like i said i've had it for 4 years, But then again that Viair one looks like it will outlast mine for decades haha
Anthony Rodriguez I also have a $10 Chinese compressor. I got it 7 years ago, but I have only used it a few times to top off the air, maybe every 6 months. Takes forever and a half.
I sort of want it to break so I have an excuse to buy a better one, lol.

There is nothing wrong with cheap ones like that. I would just look for reviews to make sure it won't die half way through inflating a tire at some cold, dark and ungodly hour when I need that tire to get me home again. That would be horrible. Make sure to read the reviews so you know that it is not guaranteed to die by next week. Now when you read them, there is always likely to be one or two people who had terrible luck and will never ever ever buy that brand again. The thing you want to look for is that the vast majority were pleased with theirs. It is not going to guarantee that you will not have problems but it should at the very least give you some piece of mind knowing you didn't squander your money on useless junk.
Yes they have excellent prices but much of that stuff is flimsy or soft steel. You save money but get junk that doesn't last long like saw blades that go dull quickly or similar things. Some of the stuff they have there does have known good brand names and some of it is just generic stuff. If I want a reliable pump, Slime won't be my first choice. I don't buy the most expensive things, I just avoid things that were made to fail.
I bought a cheap plastic pump at a goodwill for 3 bucks the package it came in seems mid 1990s it has lasted me 15 years so far no problems.
thats not bad i baught a new 1 4 years ago and now its fucking nackerd i just fixed my tire with 1 of these repair kits but cant pump me tire up oh bollocks

I keep one of these small compressors in my jeep at all times. I used it one day for that exact purpose. Found out I had a flat leaving work one day,pumped it up, drove home and patched it. It's also good for maintaining tire pressure, better than stopping at a gas station where here in CT they charge you for air!
I bought a cheap plastic compressor on harbor freight for emergencies. It took about half an hour to inflate a flat tire and the compressor felt like it was overheating. Some time later, bought a VIAIR compressor. This was long before I saw this video and got this brand due to positive reviews on amazon. The VIAIR compressor was able to inflate a flat tire in less than 3 minutes.

I have that same exact compressor, its a little beast, used it to air up my tires on my dually during winter, worked great. Does get REALLY hot though (metal parts), so careful not to burn yourself
Gotta love me Viair, picked up the 400p and only had it for a couple of months but its already paid itself off. Makes the regular trips up the Cape easier when you're constantly dropping tyre pressures, even reseated a 33" that I managed to roll off the rim no worries. As always great vid Scotty!
I think the reason people are pushing back on this "commercial" is because we rely on guys like you, the every day shady tree mechanic, for dependable, trustworthy and unadulterated advice. When you start promoting products for compensation, it leaves us skeptical and unassured, that what we are hearing is your honest opinion.
That's why I really respect ChrisFix and the videos he does, any time he mentions a product he always lets his audience know how he obtained the product and why he is showing it, providing opinions positive or negative.
Scotty, your camera presence is slightly annoying but there is something about it also that makes me watch. At the end of the day I think I can safely say we like your videos and we appreciate the time you take to make them, just return the Billy Mays starter kit and keep it authentic.
Brian Russo There is nothing wrong with someone telling you about a good product. If one of my friends had some tips for me and happened to be an expert on it, I would heed his word, to be sure.
Just cuz some people take advantage of their status doesn't mean everyone does. That's just pessimistic. and don't tell me about being a realist cuz that's just a bullshit answer. Just don't be naive and/or gullible about it. Just think about it. Which one do you think is gonna last longer? probably the Metal one.

I had one of those plastic compressor in my car once and the day I needed air in one tire, the compressor was badly warped from being in the car for years.

I have a one made out of plastic that’s lasted over 15 years. Sadly the valve stem attachment recently broke, but the motor still runs. Guess I can save money by just fixing it rather than buying a new expensive one.
Also check the tire after it gets refilled to find out the cause of the flat. Could be a simple as a nail or as complex as a warped rim or a slash on the tire. But it's always a good idea to keep a pump with you. At least it'll get you to a service station on those long road trips. :)
Part of my job is maintaining a company fleet of 60+ vehicles. We have one of those cheap Slime brand air compressors, and have pumped up dozens upon dozens of low tires for over a year now with it in wet, dry, and cold conditions. It looks and feels cheap, but is more than suitable to keep in your vehicle for emergencies. If it fails tomorrow, it was still well worth the $25. I may consider the better, more expensive metal one then, since we pump up tires more often than someone just keeping one for emergencies or the occasional fill.
+Alex Sweers Yes of course, but investing in high quality tools pays in the long run, at least statisticly. Though sometimes the cheaps things can do the job aswell. It comes down to personal preference and the size of your wallet. :)

I do agree that everyone should carry a lighter plug in small tire pump in their vehicle. If you have a flat when you go to your vehicle you can air it up to at least get it to a tire repair place. I carry one and being I am a mechanic I carry a plug repair kit so I can repair the leak after I air it back up as well. I have had to use my pump two times in the last 4 years, but oh my gosh it saved all the trouble of jacking up the vehicle and using the spare and all that mess. All motorist should have one.
Earl Guyton Can you use a 12v Portable Tire Inflator with a Older car that just has a Cigarette lighter & not one of those ports that newer cars have that say 12v on them?
I have a Viair. My Viair connects directly to the battery, so it pushes a little more air than the cigarette lighter version. The first thing you'll notice is the quality of the build. Mine works like a champ.

Im a firm believer that you het what you pay for. But about 6 years ago i needed a cheap tire inflator n got a slime one. It still works perfect to this day and ive used it quite a bit. I gotta gove credit to that little dude
I agree on the cheap products. I am on my third cheap tire compressor. My next one will be a good solid metal one.
Hey Scotty. I have the one you're not recommending and boy that thing has been a workhorse I have inflated SUV tires and it has never failed me yet I think I have it for three years now. In fact that thing is so reliable I keep it in the trunk of my car.
those little compressors can save your butt. i ended up having the tire come off the bead off road in the middle of no where. that little compressor actually reseated my bead by pulling on and letting the compressor run. sure it took like 10 minutes to fill up a 33 inch tire but sure beat walking
I got my plastic one for $5 , it works superb for last 3 years . It shakes a lot , and after one tire gets really hot , but it was so cheap that I do not care . And just to be safe , I have manual pump in car since day one .
I got 2 of these. One for each car I think it makes a good prepper item.

How has it held up over the years?
I use a spare bicycle pump I have in the trunk, works surprisingly well for 13" tires.
I bought a cheap one from Wal-mart about 5 yrs ago for $10 and since I only use it once a month to top off my tires, it's done ok by me. I do carry a spare tire,. however.

Mine is built into my emergency battery booster...along with a 120v current inverter, 12v outlets and work light. I used both the light and the 120v. during a recent power failure in my area.
Those little Viair tire inflators are actually awesome, though.

I have a plastic Slime compressor, and it's done me fine lately, probably cause I only use it to fill low tires. When my tire is actually flat, I use my full size spare tire! And the Viair sounds just like my breathing machine I had 15 years ago when I had asthma!

big rig trucks usually have an inbuilt compressor. I've seen inflator hoses that hook up to the gladhands and with the governor set to 120psi they've got all the air they need for pumping a few tires while idling

Viair makes a good portable 12 v compressor but be sure to read the owner's manual to see what the duty cycle is, and not to exceed it. I'd also suggest touching the fins on the cylinder to see how hot they are getting. If they start to get painfully hot - you've reached the end of the duty cycle; give it a rest to allow it to cool off. I have a similar model as the one you show and I figure it will top up 4 tires or totally fill up one tire, before it needs to rest and cool off.

For long trips you should bring -coolant -oil -portable jump starter or jumper leads - basic tool kit - spare drive belts -zip ties and duct tape.

I have a little plastic one. The inside looks almost exactly like the one you demonstrated except my one has an aluminium piston. I lubricated the whole mechanism with oil to make it last longer. It's biggest problem is it has plastic gears and they get a pounding when pumping up the trailer tiers. It's pretty cheap and nasty. I've been thinking about getting a big one for a while.

Everything I hear bout Harbor Freight the products never last. It's like some guy had the bright idea to sell the cheapest crap from China and make it look like it's a nice place to go. We only have one store around where I live.

Thankfully, rarely get flat tires. The last time I had one, I was not lucky enough to find it that way in the driveway. Sometimes these things happen on the road. Even if the pump doesn't have its own fuse, the sockets often have them. Look in the fuse box for it. I find that if the engine is not running the pump fuse blows easily. That is unfortunate since you only get one or two spare fuses but at least they are very commonly available parts.
I have 3 portable compressors 2 do not work I was wondering where to get one that works faster they all take to long to blow tire up.I have been watching your videos for several years now I always watch your new ones on Tuesdays,I never knew how to subscribe my youngest son showed me how.
I feel like for most people, the plastic model is good enough. Assuming you take care of your tires (including not driving over potholes on a regular basis), you might only use a tool like this once or twice for your car's entire lifespan. If you keep it in your car at all times, the reduced weight is always welcome. The Viair is definitely a much better product for people who regularly fix tires.
Personally, I use the PSX2, which is used to jumpstart cars and fill up tires.
I've actually been curious to know who makes the premium portable compressors. You can't buy these anywhere other than online.

I have a 1998 Audi A4 1.8T, it almost has 168.000 miles on it and it's drinking oil like it is gas and it has also started to make these awful crackling noises when turning and it has also lost some power, it feels really slow compared to before. Would it be worth getting these things fixed? Overall the car is in good shape, exterior as well as interior. It almost has no rust at all and starts and goes in any conditions.

Great video. Would this be okay to run off of the cigarette lighter of a 2013 Audi A6? I'm assuming that it's 15 amps. I'm not sure of the output on the car and don't want to hurt the electrical system of the vehicle. Any advice? I would probably be fine but I wanted to ask anyway. Thanks!
Luis Cannon1 second agoI plugged in my new compressor into the cigarette lighter and blew the fuse for the cigarette lighter, should have used the accessory socket which are 20 amps instead of 15 amps. lesson learned!

My cheap $5 compressor is still going strong and I've had it at least 5 years. The beauty of a cheaper one is you can throw it around until it dies where as an expensive one you wouldn't wanna get a scratch on it
If you don't mind a little exercise, a large stand-up bicycle tire pump can also fill a car tire in just a few minutes.
I use a bicycle pump. It doesn't take as long as you think. Just check the PSI from time to time. For me, I pump all 4 wheels once it's 2 PSI lower than the standard. For 2 PSI, it takes only 6 or 7 pumps.
I had a better Slime compressor. I say had because it's motor, NOT THE PLASTIC HOUSING, snapped!
I was only using it for a touch up. Wound up buying a bike footpump because it was cheap and small. Sure it takes a while to fill the tire up, but I've got some rocking calves now!
Should I install front KYB shocks or Monroe shocks for my 2001 Ford Expedition?
Ohyea they are both good shocks, but ONLY buy top end ones, not the discount models.
I have a 1999 Acura Integra GSR and i just recently replaced my axles, only when im in gear accelerating i get strong vibrations from the front, but as soon as i let off the gass or if i even give it gas while in neutral it is fine, what could be wrong? Maybe my half shaft?
I do like Viair pumps, I actually have one (at the time I got it it was the most powerful one that would run from the cigarette lighter), works great 5 or so years later.
I think the reason they say to have the car running though is that it uses quite a few amps, if you do all your tires and you have a weak/old battery you might need a jump after using this pump. Also I found that the pump would run *faster* when the car was on as well... I'm guessing the 13.5 or 14 volts from the alternator gave it a little more juice.
I'm not a fan of sponsored vids but I'm definitely convinced the $50 would be perfect for me.

Hay Scotty, I have a 2001 Toyota Corolla and my engine has some weird ideling problems. An example would be when it first starts cold in the morning it idles super low at like 600 rpm but as the engine heats up it crawls up to 800 rpm. Turning on the AC also drops my idling by 100 rpm and putting my car in park (with ac off) makes my car idle at like 1200-1300 rpm. Is there anyway to fix this crazy idling problem? Thanks Scotty

I have a 1995 GMC Serria truck my manifold gasket is just a leak at one corner of the manifold but only in the morning when turn off for 8 hours When I turn on in the morning and drive it's dry's off and stay dry till the next day Is it something to be concern about or can I drive for a while longer like that

I had a question, I recently got myself a Tesla Model S. I was wondering what your thoughts are on these new electric vehicles? Are all the claims about less moving parts = more reliability accurate?
Sahil Malik you must be a rich man, those are uber expensive. No one knows about reliability, as they haven't been out long enough. Only time will tell that, since electronics can break down even faster than mechanical parts , who knows yet?

I'm a techie, I can't see why electronics would wear out faster than mechanical parts, there is nothing to wear out. Still, there is plenty that can go wrong. Air shocks, pano roof seals, power windows/locks etc. etc. And electronics can be unreliable due to non wear and tear issues. The car is a rolling computer, and there is a lot of bad computer code floating around. You are right, time will tell. If you are ever in DC, I'll be happy to buy you dinner for all your awesome help online. We can also ride around in the Model S.
The worst compressors are the ones built into the Jump starter packs. I've gone through 4 of them, due to the cheap plastic construction. I tried a few different units, but got the same result.....thing grenades and all you can hear is the little motor free spinning inside. The hardest thing I was doing was trying to bring a tire from around 25 psi to 40 psi. Admittedly 1 of the times I let the unit run longer than the 5 min they were limited to. The others they just crapped out after 3 min or so. Might give one of these expensive units a look.
The plastic ones just use a piston to push air in and out and are so damn noisy. Most bounce around on the ground because they aren't heavy enough.. Mine even says on the box it's quiet and it's a lie. I end up holding it in my hand bent over because the hose isn't long enough and it will bounce up and down on the ground like a sick frog. The best one I have seen of that kind is the TireTek model, comes with a built in Fuse from what I remember and it doesn't move around, at least you can set it to turn off when it reaches a certain PSI unlike this model.

This one has a Fuse inside so it won't hurt your car. I would recommend any you get should have a Fuse, some even give you a Spare fuse in case you need to replace it. Keeps your cars computer from getting fried.
Thanks for the recommendation! My Corvette has a factory air pump that works great but I've been looking for one to keep in my Truck and it looks like it could handle the tires on my compact tractor as well for the times when I get stuck (happens more than I care to admit).

there one thing i don't get with this tire saving spare "tire", do you fill it up, remove the kompressor and go? Or do you fill it up and leave it in and run with it as it is pumping air into the tire?
xBuzz996 of course you remove the compressor when it's filled up. Most flat tires are caused by nails, which can take days, weeks, or even months to get flat. It doesn't fix the flat, but it will often get you where you're going, then you can get the tire patched or buy a new one if needed.
