- “Oceans" is one of the top female-led songs in contemporary worship music. I remember when it was first released… marvelling at the fresh lyrical ideas and Taya Smith’s beautiful voice! Such a lovely song, but not an easy one to sing! Check out this video for tips on how to use vocal fry to strengthen the beginning of your phrases; how to engage the right vocal resonators to gain richness, power, and freedom; how to hit that high note in the bridge with power ("take me DEEEEEPER”)!; and how to sing in a contemporary mix voice that sounds like chest voice extended up high, but without the tension and strain!

I'm no singer by any stretch and not even looking to learn or anything (I play the piano on my worship team) and yet I find myself going through these videos. They are both fun, and surprisingly effective. Those weird sounds you're making when you demonstrate the registers (is that even how it's called?), they're majorly effective and so easy to grasp. I have a very raspy voice but I love this song and I want to cover it, I got the guitar part down, that's the easy part , but there's some notes that she hits that are super high so I've been trying to find my own way to sing it in my comfort zone but it just sounds dumb lol it's like this song with design for a woman's voice . this video help me out a lot though I think I got at least a direction of how I'm going to do it. Yes, what it will most likely need is for you to expand your range and be able to hit those notes in an easy, relaxed head voice and mix voice through vocal training (scales/exercises). The more we try to force our voice into something that is underdeveloped, the more the voice will fight back!

I'm always pushing and straining, because I'm afraid of voice cracks or the note failing on those higher notes. I'm in the position of leading (because there's no one else), but I honestly don't have the talent or vocal range. Would pharyngeal resonance actually help me? By the end of the worship set, my throat is sore. I'm not a professional, so obviously I'm doing all sorts of wrong. :\
Learning to sing in a mix voice (with pharyngeal resonance) helps so much for singing in a contemporary style, and not straining your voice! I would definitely recommend training your voice so that you won't fatigue or damage your vocal cords!

For some reason when I lean into my Pharyngeal i still have tension in my throat. I'm Not exactly sure why. I have a lot of issues with tension. I sing a lot in my chest voice. not so much in my head voice. but i would love help in trying to find my mix voice. I get so wore out when singing, I cannot make it through an entire set without my voice cracking.
Hey Cheyanne! The reason why you’re feeling tension in your pharyngeal is because the pharyngeal needs to mix with head voice in the mid/high range, and if you only ever sing in chest voice you will always feel tension as you get to that mid part of your range. It’s very important that we develop head voice, not so that we can sing in a pure head voice but so that we can sing in a powerful, free mix voice!

How does this help the guys. Oceans is generally a high pitch song. So if you start the song with high note and then you go down to falsetto throughout the entire verse.
Hi Abin -- you're right, generally this song is only sung by females, so that's why I focussed only on techniques in the original recorded key. I would recommend for a male vocal, to switch the key (perhaps to F or G). You can use the same techniques and exercises I described in the video, but in the different key!
It's really uncomfortable to sing in a lower key.
Feel free to sing it in whatever key is most comfortable for you. Every voice is different, so only you can truly know your voice without me hearing it! You will be able to use these same exercises I used in the video, no matter what key you put it in. Good luck!
