    Good Lord!
    I’m 62 and I can get in and out of my Caterham faster than that with the hood on.
    It’s a totally practical, all year round daily.
    Just takes practice.
    ‘Nuff said.
    Cheers ‼️

    Loved this vid, took delivery of a Caterham 420R in December and its wild ! The SV model as here, remarkably comfortable and very well made though I know they aren't exactly cheap. The legendary steering you'd expect, and very strong Ford engine, fierce performance by anyone's standards. Great sports car :)

    Caterham's are really wonderful. Still bought the Mazda. I configured A 340R without too many fancy options which would have cost me 62000€ before road tax. I paid exactly half of that for my MX5. Soo a Caterham,absolutely! As long as money is of no concern. I still think I wouldn't risk trying a Catheram for fear to kill my wallet.

  • @wordsmithgmxch

    My last car came down to a coin-flip between precisely these two cars. Coin came up MX-5. Unavoidably in such situations, there's always a twinge of buyer's remorse. THAT issue was sorted when -- driving down to southern France on a tour -- I passed a Caterham on the autobahn. The weather was deteriorating, and the bloke (goggles, leather helmet) had slowed down to perhaps 80 kmh. Probably figured it wouldn't get all that intense and hadn't installed the boot. I left that sodden, rain-lashed soul thanking my lucky coin that it had come up MX-5. Yeh, past 70 I turned into a bit of a wuss.

    • @Runoratsu
      @Runoratsu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not too long ago I got into a real downpour with my NC Miata while on the Autobahn… I can tell you, above ~160 kph (~100mph), you'll stay dry, no matter how hard it rains. You'll just get a little bit of overspray in the cabin.
      Nevertheless, I was happy when the rain had let off a bit again and the next exit came along so I could get below ~30kph without drowning and close the roof (PRHT w/ smartTop, I don't wanna use it above that speed really).

    The only reason this video exists because they had both cars to test and feature at the same time. Why would anyone compare a 1000kg, 180bhp roadster that can be used everyday to a 500kg, 210hp track ready kit car? The MX5 fully spec'd out is £26k. The Caterham with every optionable extra is over £50k *AS A KIT* (add an extra £3.5k if you want Caterham to actually build the damn thing too!). I'm sorry, I have nothing against these two guys in the video, but what a f*cking ridiculous comparison - these cars don't even occupy the same part of the market, hence the performance difference and absurd price gap. Seriously, you're clutching at straws for videos if this is what you guys are coming up with.

    Oh, and cheers for the shot of the road kill at 2:18 too, jeez....

    The Catherham is first a Lotus Super 7 copy as the Mazda NA bases on the Lotus Elan. So, the Best Roadster is a Lotus Exige. I say this as a german Mazda Mx 5 nd owner. Only negative: Exige is expensive..

    • @paullubliner6221
      @paullubliner6221 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Copy? Not at all. It IS well developed well beyond the Lotus 7's "economy" (a bit too flimsy" as in flexible) chassis. The Exige is too heavy and besides, it's glued together as an Airfix kit.

    Price?
    2016 Autocar review I found gives the 420R's price as nearly 34,000 GBP. Not exactly a bargain when compared to the MX-5.
    As much as I love the Caterham for its simplicity, I wouldn't even consider this to be a valid comparison. If I wanted sub 4-second 0-60-times, I'd get a bike (as in "motorcycle") instead for much less than what either car costs. Then get a used Polo or something for everyday driving. The Caterham is *almost* as impractical/flawed as a bike so why not go all out and enjoy some truly direct and unfiltered driving? I've driven Elises, Exiges and the KTM X-Bow and while they're all great fun, they're still cars and can't offer you what a bike can offer you when it comes to driving pleasure, thrills and feeling connected to the road.
